Dining Reviews Sep 2008 & Feb 2009 Update 8/13 - Complete!

AH! that explains it then. Thanks for clearing it up, it was driving me nuts :rotfl:
Yeah. It makes sense though, and it's probably smart to have unbreakable plates where there are lots of kids.

Wow with all the food you had at Disney have you eaten since you got home?:rotfl2:
The sure do have alot to offer
Not really. I know I didn't eat anything between breakfast on my last day until around lunch the next day, and now I'm on a detox-type diet, and staying away from a lot of things, which after this trip, isn't that hard to do. Though I did cheat and have a little chocolate yesterday.

Great reviews! I am especially enjoying the Signature dining. Super pictures too! I can't wait for the next installment!

After a long, fun-filled morning in the Magic Kingdom, which if you haven't been reading my trip report, I won a dream Fast Pass, and I had run around literally the whole Magic Kingdom that morning, riding everything without waits. It was a great first day of vacation.

I had a 1:00 ADR at Crystal Palace for lunch.

026.jpg

I arrived early and stood in a long line for check-in, which is actually probably the longest line I stood in all day, but it moved quickly. Even with the line being that long I was still checked in before my ADR time, but I wasn't seated until 1:10 anyway.

I was greeted by my server, Edward, (who was a little practical joker, but I'll get to that later,) and ordered a diet Coke, before heading up to the buffet.

On my first trip up to the buffet I got one plate of food, and here it is;

137.jpg

I had some tropical slaw, southwestern chicken and corn salad, mashed potatoes, broccoli with puri puri and key lime ponzu, and corn spoon bread.

The tropical slaw was good, a nice coleslaw, with some pineapple added in, and perhaps some other stuff as well, but the only difference I noticed between this tropical slaw, and the usual basic coleslaw that I usually have, was pineapple. The southwest chicken and corn salad was good as well, it had a delicate spice flavoring to it, which I think was cumin, and nice pieces of white meat chicken, that were very moist. The mashed potatoes were very good. I remember them being very creamy, and I believe they might have had garlic in them, but I can't quite recall. The broccoli was good, it was a little more on the mushy side then al dente, which is how I like my vegetables to be cooked, and had a slightly sweet taste. I still had no idea what puri puri or ponzu were though, so I looked them up on Wikipedia. All I got for puri puri was a Japanese anime show. Ponzu on the other hand is a light citrus-based Japanese sauce, that explains the sweet flavor. The corn bread was very nice, and reminded me of a cross between a corn casserole I have at home, and stuffing, which is one of my favorite foods, though I rarely eat it, too many carbs.

Between my first and second plate of food Tigger came to my table, and the nice character handler with him took my picture for me. I then went up to the buffet again. This time I got my whole plate from the hot line of the buffet.

140.jpg

This time I got a piece of carved to order bbq pork, as well as a freshly carved piece of citrus-marinated flank steak. I also had some braised cabbage, cinnamon and lemon-infused rice, and at my server's suggestion, a small piece of ancho chile-rubbed salmon.

The pork had a nice flavor, but was a little on the dry side, while I thought the flank steak was cooked nicely, a little more well done then I prefer, but it was a buffet after all, so I was fine eating it the way it was. I didn't think it had a lot of flavor though. The cabbage was good, a little on the spicy side.

The rice was the only thing I didn't care for, as I thought it was very dried out, and it tasted sweet, which was weird. I mean, I knew it was cinnamon lemon rice, so the sweet flavor didn't suprise me that much, but have you ever ate something that you're used to being savory, and instead it tastes sweet, so it plays like a mind game on you. It was just an odd dish, with my brain and taste buds telling me two different things. And also, as far as it being dried out goes, the dish was almost empty, but the next time I went up to the buffet it had been replenished, so I'm sure that rice was probably better.

The salmon I had only taken a very small piece of. It sounded like something that would be spicy, and I wouldn't like it too much, plus I was planning on having the salmon at Artist Point for my dinner that night, but my server had recommended it, and as that was his only recommendation, I decided to try a small peice of it. Oh my goodness, it was so wonderful. It had a very delicate spicy-sweet flavor to it, and was so good. I really can't say enough good things about this salmon, except that it was perhaps the best thing I ate from a buffet the whole trip, (except for maybe the soups at Boma.) But if I'm rating it up there with the soups from Boma, you know it has to be good.

While I was eating this plate of food the characters came around, and had their little parade through the restaurant, which made me glad I was sitting on the inside of the table. I like kids, I do, but not so much when they are parading around the room, and I'm trying to eat my lunch. I know it's Disney, and I didn't mind it, but like I said, I was glad I was sitting on the inside of the table.

I then went up to the buffet again. Even though I was getting full, and I wanted to try some desserts I needed another peice of that salmon. I also had another small spoonfull of the corn spoonbread.

145.jpg

While I was eating my wonderful salmon, which was just as good as the first piece, Edward came over, and being the joker that he is, offered me some ketchup, which started squirting out all over. Turns out he has a fake ketchup bottle, and that's a favorite gag of his. It was cute. I also saw Pooh and Piglet as I was eating, and had my picture taken with each of them.

I then went back up to the buffet one last time, to try some desserts, even though at this point, I really didn't need to eat any more.

149.jpg

I had a piece of lemon tart, a piece of flan, a piece of chocolate marbled cheesecake, some chocolate whiskey trifle, and a chocolate pecan sqaure.

The lemon tart was all right, but a little too tart, and had it been a little bit sweeter, it would've been better. But to be fair I have been completely spoiled by a friend who makes the absolute best lemon bars. The flan was nice, very light and creamy. The cheesecake was good, but nothing spectacular. The chocolate whiskey trifle was good as well, very rich, with a strong alcohol taste. It didn't bother me, but I can't imagine kids liking something that strongly flavored. My favorite dessert however was the chocolate pecan square, which was just like a bite of pecan pie, which I love.

By the time I had finished eating I was ready to get back out to the parks, and start burning off some of the calories I had eaten up during my lunch, but I hadn't seen Eeyore yet, so I had to wait for him. Any other character I could've passed up, but not Eeyore. He was only a couple of tables away, so I didn't have long to wait.

Overall I really enjoyed my lunch at Crystal Palace, and I would return for that salmon alone. So now I may have to eat at Crystal Palace twice each trip, once for lunch, and once for breakfast.

oh my gosh I love that salmon, even tried to create it at home, came pretty close.... but yeah i'll go to the CP just for the salmon

I'm diggin' your reviews. Boy, you had a LOT of food!
I'm not a fan of Pooh, but that ancho salmon at Crystal Palace looked amazing!

I'm really looking forward to the rest of your reviews. Yum. :lovestruc

Great reviews and pictures! I feel like I can identify with you, because I am just a few years older, but I would go to Disney World once a year too if I was in your shoes!

California Grill is one of my favorite restaurants at WDW, but I am going to Cinderella's Royal Table (for lunch and a dinner) and Jiko in the next two months... I am looking forward to your Jiko review to understand why you felt that it was different from your previous visits. (My mom is vegetarian, so I did not select YS or Citricos; bad move?)

Thanks for your lovely descriptions. Did you take a notepad in the restaurant with you; how did you remember all of the names of everything (e.g., the exact cheeses, etc.)? The report is totally making me hungry. :lmao:

Thank you, there are still many more reviews to come.

I found the recipe on All Ears, and I plan to eventually try to make it at home. I have some frozen salmon filets, so maybe sometime next week.

Love your review! Thanks for sharing :)
You're welcome.

Glad you're enjoying them.

It was really good, and like I've said before, it's worth going to Crystal Palace just for that.

Jiko will be coming up soon, as soon as I do the Yak and Yeti one. Maybe I'll have both of those done sometime tomorrow. I hope to at least get Yak and Yeti up since I know I haven't gotten anything new up since Tuesday.

As far as remembering stuff goes, I did have a small notebook with me, though I didn't write in it usually until after I left the restaurant. I did however keep most of the menus, I know I have them from all of the signature restaurants. The only time I didn't keep the menus was when I ate at the buffets, breakfasts, and any restaurant that is not directly owned by Disney. All Ears is good though for remembering the exact name of dishes from the buffets and such, but it is not 100% up to date on the signature restaurant menus, as those are printed daily. I also have my pictures, and that really helps to jog my memory.

Did you actually eat all that food at AP?
I wasn't able to finish all of it, I was just too full, but I did a pretty good job of eating most of it. By day five I was having serious trouble eating everything. I hate wasting food, so anything I ordered I tried my hardest to actually eat as much as possible.

I'm getting ahead of myself. I should really be finishing day one of my trip report, but I decided to get into day two's dining reviews instead. Oh well, I'm bad. I will finish day one of my trip report before I start day three's dining reviews. . . probably.

On day two, (and if anyone's confused, this was my third day in Disney, but only my second full day as I refer to my first day as arrival and not day one, sorry if that confuses anyone.) Anyway, on day two I woke up early, was at Animal Kingdom at rope drop, and spent two hours in Asia before my 11:00 lunch ADR at Yak and Yeti.

I love Asian food, so I was really looking foward to this meal, plus it was a new restaurant, so that had me even more excited.

I had read lots of reviews about Yak and Yeti before my trip, and it seems to be one of those places that you either love or you hate. I am glad to say that I love Yak and Yeti. Maybe not quite as much as some of my other favorites, but anytime I'm in Animal Kingdom, and I want a nice table service meal, I will head to Yak and Yeti. Which still seems unpopular enough that an ADR is unnecessary to eat there, as they were seating walkups when I ate there.

It's weird, before this trip I had never eaten at any table service restaurant at Animal Kingdom. Granted, the last time I had been at Animal Kingdom, the only table service there had been Rainforest Cafe, but this trip I managed to eat at all three Animal Kingdom table service eateries, Yak and Yeti, Rainforest Cafe, and Tusker House.

So anyway, I had an 11:00 lunch ADR at Yak and Yeti, I was second in the very short line to check in, and was seated immediatly. I got a table upstairs right by the window, and it would be a nice spot to watch the afternoon parade. Of course, you'd have to time it right, and luck out and get a window table, but the parade would be viewable from there.

130.jpg

Note - This was not my table, I just took this picture to show what the tables and dining room looks like. This table was right across from me. I wish I had taken one of the view from the window, but I didn't, sorry.

I was greeted by my server Lisa, who did an excellant job of keeping me happy, and started by taking my drink order. I ordered a diet coke, (I'm sure that's a big suprise,) but I decided to get one of their speciality cocktails as well. The big bamboo sounded good to me, so I ordered that.

123.jpg

I can't find a drink menu from Yak and Yeti anywhere, so I can't recall exactly what was in this, but I do know that it was some kind of mixture or rum and fruit juices. I know all of the drinks but one sounded really good to me, and I'd like to try more drinks there, but spending all day in a theme park, I knew now would not be a good time to drink that much, LOL.

For my appetizer I had already been thinking about ordering the seared ahi tuna, and when Lisa recommended it, I knew that was my choice.

124.jpg

First off, I would like to make it very clear that this is a cold dish, and it's not hot. So for those of you who do not like cold, almost-rare, fish, I would not recommend this dish. I would say, if you like sushi, you'd probably like this. I really like sushi, and I found this to be a nice piece of tuna, or should I say pieces since there were five small slices. The tuna was encrusted with white and black sesame seeds, which I thought added a nice touch.

The white sauce on the plate is wasabi aioli, which was all right, but I do not like wasabi, though this was much more mild then actual wasabi. This reminds me of a funny story. Once I was out with coworkers, and we had gone out for sushi. One of my coworkers had never had sushi before, but is one of those people who will try anything at least once. Anyway, we got the sushi, and he tried a piece, and liked it. He then took some "green stuff" to try. Now he didn't take that much, but he took enough that we told him he might not want to try that much at once since it's really spicy. He said he didn't mind spicy things, and we were all like, okay, whatever, don't say we didn't warn you. I swear he made the funniest face ever and we were all cracking up. You probably would've had to have been there to find this that hysterical, but it was really funny.

Anyway, I didn't really care for the wasabi aioli, but it was all right. It also came with ginger, which I do like, and sweet chili slaw, which you can't see in the pic, because the tuna is covering it up, but it was a nice light, cabbage salad, which is similar to one I make at home, except without the peppers. The sauce in the dish was soy-based, but it seemed like more then just soy sauce, I'm not sure if it was just soy sauce though, or if it was something else. It was however a very nice dish overall, and like I said, if you like sushi, you'd probably like this.

It took me awhile to decide on my entree. I know I'd read somewhere, probably on the DIS, to stay away from the poultry entrees, and I was in a mood for red meat anyway, so I ordered the Shaoxing steak and shrimp.

126.jpg

This dish came with five large battered and fried shrimp, (any chance of eating healthy on this trip, has offcially gone out the window,) a nice flank steak, a mound of rice, and a pile of stir-fried vegetables.

The shrimp were nice, but there was a lot of the batter on them, and I ended up peeling most of it off, and just eating the shirmp, which were very good, especially in the chili-plum dipping sauce, which added just the ride touch. The steak, which I had ordered medium, came out more medium-well, but it was a very thin steak, so would be very easy to overcook I imagine. It was still nice and juicy, and not at all dried out, so I still enjoyed it. It was however, a bit to salty, though I think that was from the Shaoxing marinade. The rice, which was jasmine rice, which is probably my favorite type of rice, was very good, and not at all over cooked. The steak had been wrapped around the rice, and just enough of the juices from the steak had given the rice a very nice flavor. There were also a lot of vegetables, including, peppers, snow peas, carrots, and onions, but I found them to be very bland, and a little undercooked. I believe in my Crystal Palace review I said I prefer my vegeatbles to be more cooked then al dente, and these were just not cooked that much.

For dessert I had the fried wontons.

132.jpg

These were two skewers of grilled pineapple, and fried cream cheese wontons, as well as a small dish of vanilla ice cream.

I thought this was a very interesting and unique dessert. I really liked the wontons, which were nice and hot, very freshly cooked as far as I could tell, though the extra glaze was not really necessary, and made them a bit too sweet. But the ice cream cut down on the sweetness, so I would take a bite of a wonton, and then I bite of the ice cream.

Overall I really liked Yak and the Yeti. The service was excellant, and so was the food. It gets my vote as the best table service in Animal Kingdom, (though the other two aren't bad, but I'll talk about them when I get to them,) and I will return.

I realize everyone has their own opinion but I am surprised at the number of poor reviews you have seen. Yak and Yeti is now one of my favorite restauants on property. Of course, a good deal of that had to do with the service.

Also, try the poultry next time. I had the duck and it was amazing!

My travel companions (3 teen girls) joined me when my wontons came out and devoured them! They did LOOK good and the girls assured me they tasted delicious.

I'm glad you tried/like Yak and Yeti. I'm recommending it to everyone. And try the Emporer Margarita next time ;)

Thanks for another great review. I just added Yak and Yetti to our trip next week and I have been nervous about this one. Your photography is great!

I don't get how I've read so many negative reviews either, but I for one do really like this restaurant, and will be recommending it as my favorite restaurant at Animal Kingdom.

There is nothing to be nervous about, it's a great restaurant.

Thanks for the Y&Y review! We're trying it for lunch next month.:goodvibes
I hope you enjoy your meal.

Thanks for another great review. I had just added Yak and Yeti to my ADRs yesterday and am glad to hear it get a most excellent review.

Yak and Yeti looked good, except I agree that there is entirely too much batter on those shrimp. It's a shame they couldn't do more of a tempura batter on them.

Great reviews! I love the look of Yak and Yeti, I might just have to try that :goodvibes

You are the first review I've read that has sold me on Crystal Palace. It looks so beautiful and I know the kids will love it but for some reason every review I've read seemed very average like the kind of buffets we have here at home. The salmon and the corn spoon bread both look awesome! Can't wait for the rest of the reviews. :)

My DD is now moaning at me because we didn't eat at Y&Y in August :rotfl: It'll definitely be on our list for our next trip :)
