Dinner on 2/9/03:

Arrived 5 minutes early for 5:45 PS. Seated within 2 minutes. Sat in the wine room, which does not have a MK view, but is much quieter than the rest of the place. The view off the 'back side' of the Contemporary is nice, just not as interesting as the 'front side'.
Started with 3 cheese, 3 garlic flatbread appetizer. Delicious, and very flavorful, but in no way too overpowering on the garlic. Drinks were house wine, gin & tonic, and sodas. We skipped the first courses and the sushi, and ordered entrees.
DW got the Grilled Dayboat Scallops, which were perfectly cooked. Grilled outside, tender white inside. I ordered the Yellowfin Tuna with spicy somen noodle bowl. Excellent. Our server, Alicia, advised that the tuna would be medium rare, and that the noodle bowl was spicy hot. The tuna was excellent, bias cut on top of the noodles, so you could see how cooked it was. The spicy noodles were too hot for DW, but fine for me. I would say about the same heat as mild jalapenos, but with excellent broth/shiitake flavor, and a sneaky build-up heat, not unlike cayenne peppers, which made it seem hotter when you would stop eating.
Very filling meal. For dessert, we got the trio of creme brulees. I believe the flavors were espresso, vanilla, and butterscoth, served in 3 small ramikins. Perfect size for sharing, after a large meal, and very good.
Total before tip was @ $90.
Probably the best overall meal we had for the week, and the service was definitely top notch. We will be going back. A+

Will be happy to (try to) answer any questions.

I love being in the "Wine Room" We ge the best Service in the Wine Room. Better then the "Regular"dining area the last time we were in there everyone they tried to sit in there threw a fit, well that nite there was a power surge so all the fans in the CG including the kitchen had to be reset, by a enginer it took about 20 min. Well the CG started getting smoky. Our Servers just shut the doors, we had no smoke!! Bet they wished they were sitting in there at that time!

I agree it is one of the best meals WDW, even without the view.

Yeah, we saw at least 3 groups come in, realize they couldn't see what they had hoped to see from there, and requested to change tables.
The enclosure of the room really cuts down on the noise from the restaurant. We didn't realize how noisy it was out there until we were leaving. And since you can get up and go watch the fireworks anyway, we didn't think it was too bad. Very romantic setting back there. And great food too, that's just a bonus.

We also just love the wine room...it really was one of the best and most relaxing dinners we have had at WDW.

My husband loves the wine room, too. I enjoy them both but it is so much more peaceful back there!

So, it is possible to get up and watch the fireworks during your meal? It doesn't disturb everyone else?

Hi, Robert. Glad you had a good time at the California Grill! :D We're going to eat there in 2 weeks--is it convenient to get up and go out to the observation deck to watch the fireworks, even from the "wine room?" Also, are the flatbread appetizers big enough to share? Thanks! :D

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review:)

Good review. CG is one of our favorite spots. And the wine room is a great place for the meal. Q. How were you guys dressed that evening??

Mom_Rules:
Most folks do get up and move around to view the fireworks, since most of the tables don't have a great (or full) view. It dosen't really disturb anyone if the patrons just move outside to the observation area--it's pretty much an accepted thing, and the CG staff are also well used to it. What DOES disturb some people is when others get up and flock to the window area--crowding around the table where you are trying to eat your meal.

To tiggeroo42 - yes, the flatbreads were big enough to share. The two of us were fine with one, and I saw a table of 4 splitting one also. If someone was a light eater, I think it might be enough for a one person meal (which would save room for dessert, of course).

Uncleromulus - we were business casual. DW was in slacks/pants, I was in dockers and a long sleeve button down. Felt like we were dressed appropriately, maybe just a little above the average (saw quite a few people in jeans, but didn't notice any t-shirts or shorts, except on some children).
Note: When we made the PS, the cast member told us about the recommended dress being 'business casual', and something about not allowing cut-offs.

We have had people sit at our table during fireworks!

We LOVE the CG. Glad you had a good experience Robert!

Ted
