Hi everyone,

I don't know if I have ever posted in this forum, so hi and I hope you guys can help me out. I am thinking about getting a digital camera. I really love the pictures my regular camera gives me but I feel I need to step into the digital age with cameras. My mom bought one recently that was supposed to be very high quality but her pictures just do not seem as clear and crisp as my film pictures. Is that just going to be the case with any digital camera? If not, which ones do you recommend? Which ones should I avoid? I really would like to be able to see if I captured the moment right away rather than after the fact like with my film camera but not at the expense of the quality of my pictures.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I bought a Canon G4 a year ago and it has exceeded my expectations. Now that I have a photo printer as well, I don't use a regular camera anymore. When I print out pictures, it is impossible for me to tell the difference between the digital and something from a photo lab. Perhaps a professional could, but I can't.

When last I checked, Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus were the best rated on www.dpreview.com . Good site with detailed information. Check it out and then go to a local store with the intention of just looking at the models for yourself. Get a feel for what you like and what you don't. I've been very happy with Canon, but I'm sure there are other brands that would be great too. Good luck!

I am on my third digital camera already (due to upgrades only, NOTHING was wrong or bad with any of the cameras). I switched to digital due to the cost of film and processing. I can take a ton of pictures now at very little cost. I have owned 3 Canon's and honestly I would never switch to another brand at this point. I like their crisp shots and quick focus. I have owned an S20, G3 and currently a 10D (which is their mid range SLR... not a point and shoot style). My husband owns an Olympus 8080 which is a wonderful camera as well, but not near as quick to focus as I would like.

Some of the problems with crispness, like any camera, can be the settings you are using. It could be the flash was needed, a faster "film speed" was needed or a faster shutter speed. Some of that can be the camera and some can be the user/settings picked.

I would honestly come up with a budget for your desired camera, and then use Google to do searches on which ones seem to appeal to you. That way you can see sample shots of what was taken. I personally like Canon optics, but Olympus, Nikon and Sony have all been good from what I have seen as well. Good luck! :)

A good dissertation on digital basics here........

And wonderful links within that article, check them out.

I have used only digital since mid 2000, never have taken a film picture since. If you want to some taken, all digital, click on any of the links in my signature. The resort one is a good one, lots of tough lighting there.

Digital is so good since you can taken hundreds, thousands of shots for -0- cost. And see the result immediately to learn how to make it better.

First thing needed is the budget, how much. $200, $500, $1,000, more? All ranges.

I LOVE my Fuji Finepix S5000. It makes me feel like a professional photographer because every picture I've taken has come out great!

We had an Olympus and loved it (It was stolen from DH's truck last week). Now we have to save up for a new one. In the meantime it is back to my Kodak Advantix. Oh well. I still use both.
And remember if you don't want to worry about your own printing, etc., you can take your memory card to about any place in town (wal mart, walgreens, Meijer) and print them out there on photo paper, doing editing as well. I don't have the time to worry about too much technology.
