I currently have multiple resale contracts at different properties at the "World" resorts. Every contract has the same use year which was chosen based on our normal travel patterns.

I am thinking about purchasing another DVC contract at one of the non-"World" resorts. Based on this travel pattern, my current UY would not be the best. I know that unless a late reservation cancellation happens, UY does not matter. However to keep it simple for all the reasons why, would you try to get the same UY I already have or get the UY that makes the most sense for this different travel pattern?

If you are consistently using this other contract for a specific time of year, I would personally get a different UY.

Will you want to combine points sto me years? Or will you always use that different use year for just that one home resort?

What ever you decide, you are the one that has to live with your decision. If you feel that a different UY will work best and you feel that you need to buy away from WDW, then so be it.

I wouldn't do either.

It depends on the size. As you've described it, at 150 or more I'd definitely get a new UY, under it would depend.

I'd stick with the same use year and further making it part of your master contract. That has the advantage of the ability to easily mix and match your points in the use year for whatever resort you decide to book without having to hassle of separate reservations and linking or having to transfer points.

To me, it would boil down to which is more important:

* the "insurance" that a different use year would give you for the non-WDW trip

OR

* the ability to easily use the non-WDW points in combination with your other points at 7 months.

That decision is one that only you can make.

As a DL-local owing DVC @ WDW since 2004, I've considered this problem a couple times. Indeed, my CA/HI travel windows are completely different than that of WDW travel.

My conclusion, although I haven't acted on it:
  • Yes, I'm strongly in favor of owning a different UY for CA/HI Disney travel vs WDW travel.
  • I'd need sufficient points in the second UY to cover the CA/HI travel, even if only every other year. I must choose to live w/out combining the points from my WDW contracts. (Sure, I could do the one-in/one-out transfer game between my accounts ... but I couldn't justify that behavior outside an 'emergency' playbook.)
  • Renting TRANSFER points for the CA/HI reservation might make better sense. As transferred points maintain their home resort and UY this might be a safer play except for the need to use telephone reservations vs online booking.
Eventually, after a few rounds mulling about in my head, I didn't take any action. We have an ample quantity of DVC points and other timeshare for our travels.

Thanks to all for the replies........................ so in summary I think the majority has said, if I do not plan on "ever" combining the use of the points for a single reservation, it appears the different UY to work with the different travel schedule would be my best option.
