Different type of Formal Night Question

I love to go quite over the top for formal as well.
I'm European and we don't have a prom at school or any formal occasions where ballgowns would look right. Formal night is my favorite night on the cruise just so I get to play dress-up for adult :-) I even go to the salon that day to have my hair put up..

Agree with everyone else that has responded so far... you really can't get too dressed up on formal night. If it helps, the cruise staff will all be in their dress whites, Mickey will be in his tux, Minnie in her evening gown and the wait staff all in tuxes. Guests on board will be dressed in jeans to tuxes as well.
Last year we didn't do formal night, and while that was ok, this year we're opting in for the fun of a family picture with all of us dressed up.
Enjoy!!

Yeah it's definitely worth it for the photo ops. There aren't a ton of fancy dress up opportunities other than weddings etc. So we dressed up very fancy. Some people weren't dressed up at all though, but we didn't let that bother us :)

They like the idea of dressing up, but they are worried they'll look too dressed up.

They need to decide to do it and then just do it. And who cares what others are wearing?

When we go on a cruise with formal nights AND plan to be formal, I pack my dresses (and I try to find ONE pair of shoes that works with all the dresses) in my carryon. I have no interest in the bag with my pretty clothes going missing. So I have my dresses, a pair of shoes (or two), my bathing suits and coverups, sunglassses, and a bunch of sunscreen in the carryon. Because ultimately that's all I need for a cruise LOL.

OK, I'm a little off topic, but I really want to comment. Formal dress and bathing suit in your carry on?

That sounds PERFECT!

Be prepared! You would have made an excellent Boy Scout!

is there a formal night on all DCL that are 7 nights or more? we are cruising on the wonder Mexican riviera 7 nights oct 15th and was not aware there was formal night. i would love to dress up lol.

Yes, 7 night and longer cruises typically have both a formal night and a semi-formal night.

Formal night is typically the first day at sea--so that should be your first full day!

Vicki106,

Hope you are proud of your girls for wanting to dress up. I would be. We see too many kids dressed like bums these days. Tell them to go for it. You and dad should join in too. Maybe even order roses for the ladies to wear or carry that night. Who knows, next time they dress up might be their weddings.

To the person with the wedding dress, what if you make/ or have made a colored overdress for the gown like Belle had in B & B movie? Shouldn't cost too much for something thin. I would have loved to re-wear my wedding gown.

Have a great time.

I usually wear a floor length dress for formal night, a cocktail length for semi-formal and wear one or the other for Palo or Remy dinners. The floor length dress is usually either velvet or silk, usually very classic or 1920's flapper style with or without beads. So a prom dress will definitely not be out of step even though you'll see many people much more casual.

Like others have said, prom dresses will fit right in - as would jeans and a t-shirt because it's just a mixed bag on those nights.
I'll say there have been enough guests in black and even white tie attire to make me feel like a hobo in a 3-piece suit before, so for our upcoming cruise I think I'll try to bring along my Tux in addition to a suit. We roll "carry-ons only", so it's going to be an interesting packing challenge.

My daughter wore her prom dress on our last cruise and fit right in. My husband and I will be wearing tux and gown for formal night on our upcoming cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary at Palo. Bring those gowns! It's fun and special. I don't know about you, but I don't get a chance to do that in my daily life.

Can you give me any feedback on your hairstyling experience? I was thinking about doing this as well, and am curious. Did they do a good job? Did the style stay in? And was it hard to book an appointment? (Sorry for hijacking.)

We are getting ready to sail (in 10 DAYS!) on a 7 night cruise on the Fantasy. We've only done a 4 night Dream cruise before and that cruise didn't have a formal night. My teenage daughters wonder how fancy is too fancy for formal night. They have prom gowns and would love to wear them. I know most formal night questions are "Do we have to dress up?" and "Would my khakis (pjs) be too casual for formal night?" We have the opposite question. Would prom gowns be too formal? (One has a beautiful floor length yellow ball gown and the other has a floor length black and sequin gown.) They like the idea of dressing up, but they are worried they'll look too dressed up. So my question is: Have you seen people this dressed up on Formal Night? Will they look crazy?

TIA

Top one is our family one formal night...my girls and I wore long dresses.

The other pic my girls and nieces wore cocktail length dresses. you can never be too formal on formal night.

I found a dress I love for a wedding in Portugal this month and I plan on wearing it on formal night in October. Can't wait!!

Absolutely! I love seeing them on all ages. I would think it would be a treat for little ones as well, more princesses running around! Go for it! Make sure to get pictures as well.

I ve had from amazing hairdos to hmm may be I could have done that myself. I have very long thick hair and always ask for a complete put-up but let them do their own thing.
I tell them I wanna keep it a few days so let them use a lot of hairspray and bring my own bottle to top it on at night before bed, in the morning when I get out. I also bring a little hairnet to sleep at night. Usually im able to keep it about 3 days.
As to the appointment, its one of the first things i do after i ve been to the room and seen the schedule so when im sure when formal night will take place. Never had any issue in getting it at that point.

IMG_0835.PNG I dress to the nines! Sequins, tiaras, the works. Have fun and wear what you want! This is what I bought for our cruise coming up.

If there's an actual "formal" night, you'll see all manner of dress. From full on formals to shorts & t-shirts.

IMO, if someone want to "dress to the nines" then they should go for it. I have. Even did the tiara on one cruise.

I pack my formal dress in the plastic wrap from the cleaners. It helps with the wrinkles. You can also send the gowns out as soon as you're onboard for pressing, if you want.
We have these packing bags for our suits and dresses. You put the formal clothes in the garment side, shoes and other stuff in the packing cubes on the other side and then it folds up and fits nicely in a carry-on. I add a change of clothes and my swim suit in one of the cubes and I am set. Last week they were $19.99 and I ordered 2 more. The website has a video on how it rolls up into a suitcase. Keeps our dresses and suits relatively wrinkle free.
My dress is a Vera Wang ball gown (great sale!) and daughters is a blinged out long dress, so yes, go for it!
