What is the difference between sd card reader and an sd card reader/writer?

I don't know where else to ask. I've looked all over the web and can't find a good answer. I figured the good people at the DIS boards could help.

It sounds like a reader will just show you the content of your card and a writer will allow you to drag files to and from. Is this correct?

I'm want to get a card reader (or writer) so I can access my sd cards through my computer's USB port. I'd be using it for pictures and then for getting files onto and off the kid's portable media devices.

Thank you!

Reader = Copy pictures off SD card
Reader/writer = Copy or write pictures/files to SD card.

Keep in mind some products that are called SD card readers are in fact Readers/writers.

A good example of a SD card reader might be a Canon digital camera connected via USB. You can copy files from the SD card but you cannot write files to the card.
