Did anyone else hear this on ABC news? (sorry if already discussed!)

Many of us seem to be (somewhat) addicted, judging by the excitement when its on sale! ;)

Actually, the study is ALL diet soda but Diet Coke is the most popular.

What do y'all think? Will you now drink less? Its my fave too and I don't want to believe it!! :confused3

Per this study -
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/HeartHealth/diet-soda-linked-heart-attack-stroke-risk/story?id=12868269

"According to a study of more than 2,500 people presented today as a poster at the American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles, people who drank diet soda daily had a 61 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events compared to those who drank no soda, even when accounting for smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption and calories consumed per day. "

There will be a lot of conversation on this one. The beverage industry is not happy.

:confused3:scared1:

It's a bunch of bullhooey from a VERY flawed "study":

way before this announcement. I've been drinking the adult kool aid mixtures, now like Crystal Light.

What is the sweetener in Crystal Light? If its aspartame, its just like drinking diet soda, no?

Well, I dont know which facts are true, but I know this a fact that Diet soda has more sodium in it than non diet soda. The labels numbers prove this. This is not made up. Thats one of the things that is true and its worse for you than regular. And that link to that newspaper write up its just a reporter who wrote that. She just took a survey to see how many diet drinkers had a stroke. This has nothing to do with the Facts.

After careful consideration, while drinking my first Diet Coke of the day. Oh well, they can pry the can out of my dead hand.

I don't believe any of this stuff. Just like I don't believe in the "Milk, it does a body good crap" I happen to believe that mild is horrible for you and so did my Dr when I was growing up and told my mom, not to make me drink it. But hey, if you like the taste of it, go for it.

I love my Diet Coke for the taste of it, can't stand regular. Yes, I should and will cut down. I do drink quite a bit of water, but water is just nasty to me, but I suffer through it.

I knew a girl , her father was in research. She told me that she alter their conclusions all the time, that is the way they get money for more research, it is a game. No one knows what really goes on, they just do more studies so they can get more money. It is a business, at least that is what her father told her. FWIW, his firms researched soy and we all know how those studies are ever changing.

According to what I heard on the radio, it has to do with the sodium in diet drinks rather than the artificial sweetener itself. They've thought high sodium diets result in more strokes/heart issues/high blood pressure for years, so this isn't anything really new.

I switched to drinking ice tea instead of diet drinks about two years ago (I still drink soda when I go out to eat, but it's not the 3 to 4 a day I used to drink). Honestly I thought I'd have a rough time with it but it was pretty easy. I don't miss the cost on my grocery bill each week, that's for sure! Ice tea is cheap, I spend about $5.00 a month instead of of $20 (or more) a month. It takes me about 10 minutes to brew a huge pitcher of the stuff and it lasts for a couple of days. I'll add a splash of lemonaide to sweaten it (plus the lemon flavor).

Those are good, Just in case you didn't know. They call those Arnold Palmer's. We love them.

I don't think they accounted for enough factors. I'm not going to stop drinking diet drinks.

I personally always thought there was something 'not quite right' about Diet sodas and artificial sweeteners. They just tasted too 'chemical' for me. DH even quit diet sodas when we were TTC. Now they don't taste right to him either. I think there's something to be said about that, regardless about what some study says. I don't often believe studies anyway-- their logic is often flawed and they don't seem to understand correlation vs. causation.

Oh, blah, blah, blah...... Eggs are bad. Eggs are good. Bacon is bad, bacon is good. Carbs are bad, carbs are good.

"They" always find somthing wrong with everything!!!

The truth is, no one gets out of here alive, KWIM? If you consume soda in moderation, then it is probably no better or worse for you than consuming one of the other "bad for you" foods or beverages in moderation.

:thumbsup2 It's always something!

Yes, there is sodium in diet sodas, but some people have the idea that they can eat whatever they want while drinking the diet soda. They feel like they are cutting back sufficiently by drinking a no-calorie drink. So they are consuming too much salt, too much fat, too much of the wrong kind of fat and not the right kind, too many carbs, too many empty calories, and so on. And then not exercising enough. Every single day, not just the occasional splurge. So as several have said, moderation is key.

Diet coke has the same sodium content as does regular coke. 35 mg per 8 oz of liquid.

Now, diet coke drinkers are probably drinking more soda than are other soda drinkers.

The guy on Good Morning America said this study was a perfect example of bad science. They took their pool of people, asked them how much diet soda they drank, and then checked back many years later. They did not ask about how habits might have changed during that time, didn't look at any other factors, etc. I'm not saying diet coke is good or bad, but this study is definitely bad.

This study is not going to change the amount of diet soda I drink. The price is what stopped me from drinking so much.

The "study" was a simple correlation study. Basically, more people who have problems also drink diet than drink regular soda. It did not look for any other factors, such as do they exercise, or are they overweight? So while the basic correlation is there, there is no cause and effect relationship. Typical meaningless study to suck up government grant money.

While its true that something will kill everyone, I for one am not going to help it along any faster than it has too!

I havent read the study posted, but I did watch a documentary called Sweet Misery last year. (google it if your interested). Its about aspartame. I will never consume it again (or let my kids have it). Its NOT natural. But then again, Im one to avoid High fructose corn syrup and try to eat organically too. But given a choice, Id way rather consume the regular coke with the HFCS(which I will once in a blue moon) than the diet with the aspartame!

To each their own though! No skin off my back if you want to keep drinking it :)

PS; we find making homemade ice tea (often raspberry) in the summer is much tastier and pretty low in calorie. And, if we are in a really bubbly kind of mood selter with juice is "soda" at our house..... regular (non diet) soda is just a treat for the few times we go out to dinner!
