Diet Coke (All diet soda) Dangerous ???!!!!

I go along with the poster that said they can pry it out of my cold dead hand. I drink Diet Coke pretty much exclusively. First thing when I get up and last thing before I go to bed. Everything in between, unless we happen to be somewhere they serve Pepsi products, then it's water with lemon.

Believe me, I drink enough that if it was going to kill me, it would have done it by now. :confused3:rotfl2:

Research methods are manipulated to make the data say what they want it to say. You can go through life listening to the panic and changing your "lifestyle" every few years, or you can do what feels right and works for your family.

To each their own... *cheers* with my 52 oz Diet Coke cup!

We cut out most soda in our house. We still sometimes do get it when we go out for a meal or if we are having company over, but we don't keep it around.

Between the artificial chemical sweeteners and the artificial chemical other ingredients, not to mention carbonation and what it does to our bones, we just don't do it often.

Oh, blah, blah, blah...... Eggs are bad. Eggs are good. Bacon is bad, bacon is good. Carbs are bad, carbs are good.

"They" always find somthing wrong with everything!!!

I totally agree. And whatever EVIL thing there is this week, next week there will be another study that will name something else as the evil food, or there might be another study later that will prove the opposite of what this weeks study says. It's always something....I figure that the advice my grandmother always gave is still good advice:
"all things in moderation"

I havent read the study posted, but I did watch a documentary called Sweet Misery last year. (google it if your interested). Its about aspartame. I will never consume it again (or let my kids have it). Its NOT natural.

That's a fallacy that natural = good (one of my pet peeves).

Cobras are natural.
Arsenic is natural.
Poisonous mushrooms are natural.
Salmonella is natural.

Not saying that aspartame is good for you, but something that is natural isn't always good for you either.

I'm not a fan. We're pretty much a water family. Our bodies need it, and we drink a lot of it. We've never cared much for soda ourselves so the kids never really have much of it either. I can't imagine it's all that good for you.. so I don't need to know exactly how bad it is to not want it.

While absolutely true, I dont think anyone would intentionally choose to eat any of those things :) Not all natural things are safe, but its a good bet anything man made from chemicals isnt best for your body (especially over long term use).

And to the other poster, "all things in moderation", while I agree with many things, it certainly cant be said of all things in life (IE: heroin would be an example).

Best thing is to learn about what you are putting in your body and make your own choice. :)

The guy on Good Morning America said this study was a perfect example of bad science. They took their pool of people, asked them how much diet soda they drank, and then checked back many years later. They did not ask about how habits might have changed during that time, didn't look at any other factors, etc. I'm not saying diet coke is good or bad, but this study is definitely bad.

Yup! We just discussed this exact report yesterday in my statistics class. It's a totally crappy study. We actually laughed quite a bit about it in our lecture yesterday.Read the actual journal article itself - Oh wait! This wasn't even a peer reviewed journal article - it was a CONFERENCE paper, not even scrutinized.

The one thing I've learned in grad school is that pretty much everything that is reported on the news when it comes to "scientific" studies are pure baloney.

But going along with this topic, I still don't drink diet soda, but for other reasons.

The "study" was a simple correlation study. Basically, more people who have problems also drink diet than drink regular soda. It did not look for any other factors, such as do they exercise, or are they overweight? So while the basic correlation is there, there is no cause and effect relationship. Typical meaningless study to suck up government grant money.

The study actually did control for those things (diet, exercise), but many news reports chose not to report that --- again, I say when the news reports scientific studies, it's usually bogus. The big thing is that they asked people what they did 9 years ago. and then didn't follow up on the continuing habits. Also, they never asked how MUCH diet soda they drank - was it the big gulp or a shot glass? AND the average age of the sample was 69 years old (not sure if that is at the beginning or the end of the 9 years) - did it just so happen that the sample that had the heart disease were the older group?

What the title of the study SHOULD be is:

"Drinking Some Diet Soda 9 Years ago may be linked to heart disease in older people." No one would have reacted to THAT title - we'd all question it and say that's a stupid study.

On a positive side, this report COULD provide a spring board for better designed studies that actually do track consumption over time, and control for other things. It's really just a pilot study, not meant to be sent out to the masses.

LOL!!!! to the natural deadly items. Let's just be honest. None of us need a study to know Diet Coke isn't good for you. Those of us who drink it know there is probably risks involved. We all know for an absolute fact that pure water is better for you than Diet Coke.

Just like people know french fries have more fat then plain baked potatoes, taking a walk is better than laying around all day drinking beer and watching Netflix, Yoga is better than being stressed out at work, bikes are better then airplanes and cars.

But we have to make choices. So I'm not gonna feel guilty about the Hershey Kiss or Diet Coke I have every once in awhile. Moderation is a good thing in all of life. No study needed.

I've been off of diet soda (5 years) and only drink reg. soda once a week as a treat and I've never felt better. After getting off of diet soda I lost weight because the aspertame sweetner seemed to make me crave food and when I got off I didn't have that never full feeling again. Plus, no more headaches, I rarely have headaches, had them all the time while drinking diet soda.
I like drinking flavored unsweetened selser waters, i like the fizz and don't need the added calories or fake sweetners--I believe in the saying--you are what you eat or drink for that matter. I do agree that soda diet or reg. are very addictive and should be used in moderation.

What if man used natural chemicals?

Here's my PSA, switch to diet Pepsi, only 25mg of sodium per 8 oz. :lmao:

The study was very flawed and is a bunch of carp! It isn't worth the paper it was written on.

Soda in general is horrible for you. So this doesn't surprise me. More people should be drinking water anyway. Do people really think those fake sweeteners are actually good for you, lol?

File this study under the heading No S@&t Sherlock...

This reminds me of a George Carlin line:

"Saliva has been proven to cause cancer...but only if swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time."

I've come to the conclusion throughout my life that everything is bad for you, everything is dangerous and everything can kill you. It's something new everyday!!!

Guess im switching to beer and hard liquor.

:rotfl2:

I'm trying to kick the diet crack habit myself. I'm down by about half. My new poison is mixture of black tea and raspberry tea very lightly sweetened with fair trade organic raw honey.

Any day now they should announce that bee spit causes cancer.
