Did your children grow up to be budget minded?

My DDs are far more budget minded than I am, but I hate to shop, so I don't spend much. Neither of them, however, pays retail for ANYTHING except gas. It's a challenge to them, to see how much they can save.

Very good point and exactly what I hope to have taught my children.

I hope that my children have learned to set up a budget that allows them to enjoy the things that bring them happiness while living within their means. Be frugal in some areas, save, plan for the future and then enjoy your splurges guilt free.

That is how we were raised! My parents did not drive luxury cars, we did not live in the biggest house etc- but we went to disney every year!!

I think that there can be two extremes - and in those cases i think the children tend to go the opposite side. I think the best teacher though - is when they have to use their own money. It really never hits home until that happens.

Yes, both of these! Involving them and letting them learn the ways to be budget minded and responsible, not just by living a certain way.

I was pretty budget minded in my teenage years. My parents were penny-pinchers growing up so I knew we didn't just spend money on frivolous things (like going to a fast food place or buying clothes when it wasn't a birthday or holiday). I threw all good budget sense out the window around 18-19 though. I regained financial sanity around 25 and have been working on saving and recovering from those 6-7 years of thinking credit cards just meant a good time.

I think budgeting is good for all parents to teach their kids but it doesn't necessarily mean if they make financial mistakes that they didn't learn anything. Sometimes it takes making their own mistakes to find out the hard way, unfortunately.

My kids are learning to save for what they want, that sometimes it pays to pay more for quality, to not owe people, to read the small print, and to think before they purchase. I don't want them to be penny wise and pound foolish. They know we pay mor for quality food, furniture that stands up to time and a bunch of boys. They also know that sometimes you just can't have what you want when you want it.

Yes they do learn from me. Whenever we are shopping they pick something up and say "is this on sale Mom?"


Or when they are picking out cereal they automatically know to ask "which ones are on sale this week?"
