Did/will you have a Groom's Cake at your Wedding?

Yes, we did. DH's cake was chocolate and in a hexagonal shape, same as one of the layers of the main cake. We also had chocolate cream cheese mints on his table, to go with the pastel cream cheese mints on mine. Oh, they were yummy! Our wedding was 17 years ago last month.

This reminds me of Steel Magnolias- the bleeding Armadillo Cake!

I performed in quite a few weddings at Disney. I do remember one specifically. It was a holiday wedding so the characters were in holiday attire. I remember it because it is hte only time I have been asked to take a picture with a Groom's Cake. The couple were Philadelphia Eagles fans, and so that was the groom's cake. I thought it was cute.

We were married 29 years ago and we had a groom's cake after the rehearsal dinner. I was surprised when I found out that not everyone had one.

We hadn't planned on having one, but a family friend offered to make one as her wedding gift to us. It was super yummy- MUCH better than the wedding cake, which was funny, since the wedding cake was made by a professional pastry chef, and the groom's cake was made by a housewife. The groom's cake was devil's food with chocolate icing and lots of "gold" drachma coins decorating it- our family friend is Greek, and told us the greek coins were good luck.

Groom cakes originally were cut up and packed for the guest to take home and the single ladies would put their slice under their pillows in hopes to dream about their future husbands.

We had a grooms cake at our wedding because I grew up with that tradition. Ours was a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. It was a nice alternative to the wedding cake, which was a very nice pound cake with white icing.

I have noticed that friends who aren't from the south are not familar with the tradition. My husband and his family are from CT and had never heard of it until I mentioned it for our reception.

I learned about Groom's cakes when I was 11 from Steel Magnolias and the "bleeding armadilla groom's cake!"

I think it's more of a southern tradition. We won't be having one because we're having a very small wedding (less than 20 people).

Yes, but my DH and I got married in Houston, Tx almost 25 years ago.
My sisters friends helped us get the food for the reception, they were all so nice. Then one of them told us about the grooms cake. She made it for us.
It was a german chocolate cake and it had teddy bears on it. That was in reference to the first gift my DH gave me.
So sweet, so nice of them to help us Northern people with their tradition!

Married 18 years and Southern, so we had a grooms cake. The only part of it we had was the bite we fed each other. It was chocolate/chocolate and from what I was told, to die for it was so yummy. The same lady made it as our wedding cake, which was also devoured by everyone. Funny thing, we did the freeze the top layer thing and eat it for your first anniversary, that cake was still delish!

Yes, yes we did. I am from the South and my husband is from the northeast.... When I mentioned the tradition of a groom's cake he was all about it!

My niece got married a year ago - and had that same cake for her groom's cake. Even funnier.... her new SIL posted a picture of it on MySpace, and they took it down - they thought it was REAL!

I agree that it's kinda "out there," but everybody sure did get a kick out of it! (Except for those people who didn't see the movie - who just COULDN'T understand!)

Oh, and BTW - it "was" red velvet cake inside, and it was DELICIOUS!!!

Aprilgail -it is usually chocolate or a different flavor and more lighthearted instead of pretty. My husbands looked like a golf course. (yes it did look kind of silly)

There are lots of things that are very regional about weddings. I am careful not to criticize the ones from up north that are different than ours. I don't want to hurt anyones feelings.

Yes, I think the groom's cake is a regional thing. Here in the South, almost everyone has one. I always took it to mean that the bride gets to choose most things about the wedding, including the flavor and look of the wedding cake. The groom's cake is in his favorite flavor, and decorated more as a "fun" guy's cake (like a treasure chest, golf course, or poker game, which I've seen at various weddings throughout the years). Sort of a nod to the groom, who has little say in the whole "girly-ness" of the wddding.

I obviously didn't have one, but if I knew about the idea back then, I would have passed on it. We had a really big wedding cake plus a Venetian dessert station, so it would have been cake overkill. Cute idea, though.

Heard about is on the shows I watch on TLC etc.
Not something that is typically done in my region. So, we did not have one.
I was married 14 years ago I cannot believe it--I am starting to feel old!!
