Did we make a mistake?

I would also say you're doing the right thing, and I'm one of the people involved in that discussion.

Beyond anything else, this is what DVC is.

You're getting place to stay that is superior to even the Deluxe resorts, for a better price.

As for the rest? I woul dhave to say that some of this isn't as big a thing as it seems.

We've always happily stayed at the values. Now that we are DVCers, the magic is beyond compare. We couldn't be more pleased with our decision.

These boards are but a small fraction of the overall Disney members, and thus a small fraction of the opinions of DVC. As with most mass media, the negative tends to be empasized much more than the positive. The vast majority of DVCers are happy and have had no or little problems - that's why it's so popular. We all love our DVC and as such we tend to hyper-evaluate all aspects of it. Don't mistake the the seemingly high percentage of negative posts for reality.

If you love Disney and plan on going at least once every two years, you will love DVC! We have never regretted taking the plunge and joining!

We just love DVC. We've been members since 1996, never request anything but N/S. Always have gotten it. some great views some not so great. But we are only in rooms to sleep for the most part so we don't mind. We've been to HH and Vero often too and love them both!

I love my DVC homes. And I really feel like I'm at home when I stay in a DVC Villa. Just got back from OKW on Monday and I miss it like crazy. We loved bringing family alone on this trip. They got the second bedroom, plus the kids often slept in the sleeper sofa and love seat together (we had 8 in a two bedroom villa). My BIL and SIL loved it, too. On the day we packed up, we asked the kids if they wanted to do this again some time and they all yelled "YES". We'd like to do it again, too.

I agree with what everyone else has said. We rented points and stayed at OKW two times before we bought at SSR in December. Both times at OKW we were treated royally by all the CMs. I never once had any reason to complain. The DVC properties are wonderful and my experiences with the CMs has been wonderful too.

I'm so excited and I can't wait for my first real visit "home". I don't think you made a mistake at all. We were talking last night about the fact that we've only been going once a year and with 200 points we couldn't help but wonder what to do with them. The solution was simple -- go more often and stay longer!

We felt the same way after listening to complaint after complaint on these boards. Boy, were we surprised!! We didn't have even one issue with our entire trip. And we bought SSR sight unseen. We couldn't be happier.

I'm going on my second trip home in two weeks! My first experience at BCV was wonderful. While I have made requests, I made sure the CMs know they are just that - not demands.

2 years ago we stayed at AKL with AP discount. I mentioned that we were excited about recently joining DVC to the CM as we were checking in. She smiled and said she was a member too! She was kind enough to upgrade us to Savannah view, not because I was DVC, but just because it was available. We had a pleasant exchange and I appreciate that she took the trouble to give me a little lagniappe as we say in New Orleans, or a little something for nothing.

I think DVC is a great way for my family to spend more quality time at our favorite vacation place than we would otherwise do.

I experienced the EXACT same feelings that you are currently experiencing when I was about to sign and then right after. I think it is a bit of buyers remorse. It IS a big investment. It IS a little bit of an unknown (just wait until you are trying to figure out how to SPEND those points at first lol - I am STILL overwhelmed with it all!!! :D and it rocks!!!). It IS the best thing you will ever do if you love vacationing, love Disney and great resorts with outstanding service, and if you take at least annual vacations (if not more - we find ourselves at Disney MANY times a year).

If you think you might do more trading out, then it is probably not a good financial investment, but it still might be a great FAMILY investment. You are pre-paying for time together. You will be able to give others the chance to do things they might never have the chance to do.

You know what sold me? I can take my son's now (they are 2 and 4 - maybe one more coming) and when they are tired of it, I can go myself or try other places sometimes and then - I will be able to take my grandbabies!!! *smile*

I would say I would kick myself for not doing it sooner, but I love the extra years at SSR so I am glad we didn't find out about it until last year.

Welcome Home!!!

Don't listen to all the petty arguing going on. It's just that "petty arguing". One disgruntled person started it all. I don't see why everyone can't just "agree to disagree".

We have always been treated wonderfully by any CM at any of the Disney resorts, and on the cruises we have taken. Every trip we take to Disney or to a hotel associated, just confirms that we made the right decision.

revrob -- You have indeed committed an error of biblical proportions! You need to escape your perilous situation quickly. To aid you in this endeavor, I hereby offer my services: just feel free to deed your points over to me, gratis, and I will insure that you are no longer in any danger!!! ;) :p :tilt:

The only way you made a mistake is if you truly do not enjoy going to the most magical place on earth even if there is some crabby cast members and crabby loud obnoxious guests it is still the best place to take your family for a holiday.

When I see crabbiness, I just go to the TOT and I forget all about that.

Seriously, you now own awesome accomidations at the happiest place on earth. Don't let others try to convince you otherwise and you are good to go!

I agree with DisneySpence, it is still the best place to take your family!

We are also new to DVC as of 2003. Our first trip "home" was to Vero Beach last July. We had a few issues in the room, but the “fix it guys” corrected the problems within 20 minutes of the phone call. Our second trip is coming up. I’m still learning the “hard way” about booking time frames, etc. Overall our family was very happy. Good luck

Welcome to the disboards, oly!

Enjoy your upcoming trip.

We went through similar feelings after our purchase. But many on this forum reassured us that we would be fine and how right they were. You too will be fine and once that 1st DVC is under your belt, you will have no regrets. Our DVC trips just keep getting better and better.

PLenty of folks will always be sure to note what went "wrong" with their vacation, who amongst their party was "obnoxious", how many park rides were down, which CM was rude, which countertop had crumbs, which bed squeaked, which shower had mold. Either the bed was too hard or too soft, the porridge was too hot or too cold... you get the idea! And all of these reports can happen ANYWHERE -- just check the regular resorts board, or ask the average traveler about ANY hotel stay they ever had. You will surely hear the negatives they encountered. These aren't things that are exclusive to DVC, or WDW, or even hotels -- I pride myself on a pretty clean, nice home, but I'd be willing to bet that if we invited trip-reporting guests in for a week, they could find plenty to grouse about!

("...and the family room always had FAMILY in it, talking and making noise! And the walk to the bathroom was at least 10 feet long. Our room wasn't ready when we got there -- something about still needing to move some of the family members around to "accommodate" us -- what's with THAT? And the room -- well, the bedrooms weren't nearly large enough, the decor was Early Elementary School Kid which I did NOT care for, and frankly, I found the flight of stairs to be a real big pain in the buttookus....")

Let's face it -- reports of "Wow, my family members were all so tolerable!" will not get nearly the attention that a Jerry Springeresque tale of "Families Behaving Badly" will get. Just take a look at the Trip Reports Board. People just love to feel that righteous indignation! And in the essence of "tellin it like it is", we have become a society that tells it only like "it was wrong". We leave out the good stuff -- the positive stuff -- because that's supposed to be a "given" -- anything short of perfection should be reported to the authorities! And let's face it, if someone reported that they had a few things happen, but they still had a GREAT vacation, and listed all the great things -- what will people post afterwards? Questions, wanting details about what went wrong and why!

That sad statement of society said, we have always found our DVC trips to be awesome! We ALWAYS request NS, and thus far many trips later, have gotten it. Same goes for my DVC sis. And I should note, too, there is a whole entity of DVCers who still don't know about the DIS (And even if they did, wouldn't necessarily post!) My sister is one of them. DVCer and proud of it since 93... but she's no DISer. And she has had some AWESOME DVC vacations (WDW, of course, and HHI, but also Tanque Verde, Hawaii, Stowe, Trapp Family Lodge, Claremont). My DH and I would normally be moderate or value travelers, but DVC lets us live like Deluxe! And yet, we can do it at our level of comfort (for example... DH is allergic to valet parking. Viva la SSR and OKW! I love the idea of a mountain cabin getaway, but DH says he be bored silly just stuck in some hillside lodge -- hooray for VWL!) There is something for everyone. And DH loves the beach and the waterfront (but I prefer a pool, thankyouverymuch... yay for Beach CLub and HHI!) I could go on and on and on....

Give it time -- you will be the same way, too!

Relax, enjoy, experience the magic for yourselves!

There are some ninnies posting here. Entrenched grouches. Just ignore them. The fact that they can make Disney World sound bad shows you how warped they are. Nothing will please some of em.

I have always found the CM's to be at least cordial, and usually quite friendly. I have fun trying to make their days magic, too. And some times if I give a little more than I get, so what? I guess, at the end of the day, I'd rather have it that way.

Our most notable "bad" experience was at check in at Boardwalk last summer. The CM was barely nice. Didn't seem to like his job. I could tell he didn't like answering my questions, but he wasn't rude. Maybe he'd had a fight with his wife, or boss. Maybe he didn't like DVC members. I don't know. All I can do is hope that my attitude made him a little friendlier for the next guest.

I don't post very much, but I know some people only post the negatives about their trips. An example, the "dumpster" views at VWL. I had that view once and, aside from the long walk from the elevator, it was not a problem. The dumpster is not for trash, it is for soiled linens. We spend very little time on the balcony - we spend our time enjoying the parks and resorts. You will not regret your decision to buy.

Don't worry, it's not an irreversable decision. If you decide to sell, you can still get very good value for your timeshare, which can be a great comfort for an expensive decision. All the reinforcing posts your reading in this thread must also help.
