Did I overpay?

Posted on this site, resales for POLY July 2018. $177 does look to be a bit high. As long as you're happy just enjoy the resort and don't worry about the cost.
PVB:

DVC Fanatic---$145-$31133-200-PVB-Dec-0/17, 200/18, 200/19- sent 6/26, passed 7/12

phatscott25---$150-$16165-100-PVB-Jun-0/17, 110/18, 100/19, 100/20- sent 6/20, passed 7/23

DVC2018---$145-$15825-100-PVB-Jun-0/17, 161/18, 100/19- sent 7/10, passed 7/27

I've spent the last 6 months or so looking at the resale companies and following the price trends. When I put my bid in, because it had the double points for this year it seem like a good bid until I started perusing the ROFR thread here. Either way we are pretty excited to own a little sliver of the Poly :)

For others reading, looking at listing prices mainly doesn't give a very good picture but to some degree one must decide how much effort to put into getting a great deal. Time and emotional energy have value too. IMO finding a good contract is far more important that getting the best deal. A fully loaded contract at a decent price is often a better value than the savings on a stripped contract at a "great" price because the points have a definable value and the market doesn't adjust for the total value of those points.

OP paid $170 for a loaded contract. While $177 may be high, taking that $7 off is relevant.

I had not anticipated them accepting at $7 below asking price. It was the first time that I had ever bid on a contract and was curious to see what they would come back with. But within a half an hour, the Real-estate agent called me to touch base, called the seller with my bid, and then called me back to say it was accepted.

Getting 100 point contract versus 150 etc.. was important to us because we want to buy a 75 point contract direct from Disney when we are down there in January. At $220/point it might not be at the poly this time, LOL!

I would consider something else, maybe CCV or Riviera even if you have to wait and see what the offering is. You might also try to get BLT/VGF/VGC from them direct if you have interest. Is there a reason to wait and do it there, can you not buy from home? Not everyone can due to state/country sales restrictions.

Yeah it's a Canadian thing...when we buy it direct from Disney we have to buy it in the States. We are usually down 3 times every 2 years, so it's not essential we do it this trip.

You can read about all the "great deals" but it's not always possible to obtain similar if you are looking for a specific UY and size. So, if you got exactly what you wanted, that's all that matters.

When you say "extra 100 points" do you mean that these are extra 2017 points or 2018 points? Looking around I think I've found your exact listing. It shows 0/17, 200/18, and 100/19 points. As this is December UY, this contract has 0 points in the current UY and double in 2018 UY. The same broker has a contract with the same UY that is 100/17, 200/18, and 100/19. This one is offered at $175. I probably would have bid $170 on this one first and then offered on the contract you bought. I think the second contract is more desirable as it has 400 points vs 300 points in the same time frame.

I could be looking at the wrong contracts, but I think you overpaid slightly. But as others have said, if you are happy with the purchase then I wouldn't worry about it. In the long run it's a small amount compared to the overall amount of the total $$$ you'll spend at WDW.

You haven't really provided enough details to definitely say yes or no, but honestly it would seem that yes, you could have gotten a better deal. Double points doesn't actually describe it well enough as UY and dues you paid will factor in. Off the top it sounds like someone who posted a selling price that was higher than recent sales to see if they could get a taker.

However, over the life of the contract it doesn't mean it's adding a ton to the cost. It just means you probably could have done better. It's easily better than direct of course.

While your deal probably would not qualify as a great deal to many on this site you have to keep In mind we are the minority of dvc buyers, most do little to no research and pay direct or the first resale contract they see because it was cheaper than direct.

Enjoy your contact

That contract (100/17, 200/18, and 100/19) you're looking at just got listed yesterday and wasn't there when I put my bid in. If it were there, I'd defiantly have bid on that one first. My contract was (10/17, 200/18 and 100/190).

I'm not stressed about any of this :). The stumbling block was convincing my wife it was a good idea, rather than the actual price of the contract. Thanks for the information!

It’ll probably be October before you have points in your account and that would make it very difficult to use those ‘17 points in less than 2 months anyway.

I wouldn’t sweat that, either.

Looking now at some of the other sales for DVC, I'm starting getting the feeling that I may have overpaid.

Our bid for 100 Polynesian points was accepted at $170/point.

It was listed at $177/point and did come with an extra 100 points (200 total points this year)/ I'm OK either way, but just curious what other people think.

Thanks!

Back in February when we first started looking at VGC contracts (around $150pp), we passed thinking it was too expensive especially compared to some of the deals people got on the ROFR thread. Now we wish we can find a VGC contract for $150pp! As others have said, if you're ok with it and can afford it, over the long lifetime of the contract, it really doesn't make much difference. A year from now, someone could be looking at this thread and thinking what a bargain you got!

Agree that I wouldn't give any value to those '17 points. It's difficult to rent, availability is limited, and you'll get close to nothing from rental brokers because they are considered distressed.

Couldn't be put on a wait list for sold out resorts either (calling from Australia). I'm wondering if I called Disney and told them that I'm calling from Hawaii if they really can geolocate and verify your physical location? :ssst:

I recently "overpaid" for an AKV contract. Why?
  1. Because I have a hard to match UY and finding a matching UY via resale wasn't panning out.
  2. Because it was the exact number of points I wanted.
  3. Because it was a small contract and haggling over a few dollars per point would have only saved me a few hundred dollars.
  4. Because the seller was paying the dues on all current points.
  5. Because DVC was exercising ROFR on a lot of AKV contracts at the time.
I guess that I could beat myself up over the money I could have saved if I had negotiated over the price more. Or I can just move on and enjoy planning my next trip.

Remember, real estate purchases are just that. Like buying a house...who is to say whether or not you overpaid. If you are happy with your purchase, you paid the right price. No second guessing.
