Did Adam Lambert just kill his career before it even started?

I agree. I am sick of tired of singers going on television and making out during their songs. I mean, it is bad enough when Barbra Streistand starts smooching while singing; or Celine Dion; or Frank Sinatra; or Elvis, or..

Wait. I don't seem to recall these singers doing such antics on stage. Hmm. Could it be that their talent in singing was all that was required to get attention from the audience?

Stange concept. I shall have to think on it.
Oh believe me...there were huge issues with Elvis as well. And Frank Sinatra?? My mother used to tell me how upset her mother would get with her for listening to that 'trash'!!! Every generation has their 'issue'.
I think one problem could be that our kids are now desensitized when it comes to overt sexuality. They see it all the time...they see nothing wrong with a lot of the song lyrics or behaviours on stage. When I told my dd, 16, that I found Lambert's song lyrics to be distasteful, she asked me why. I asked her if she had actually listened to them? No, she had not. But, even she was shocked at the onstage behaviour in that performance.
Also....did anyone else notice how little the audience was 'into' that performance?? Usually there is a ton of movement, raised arms, swaying, etc. When Adam Lambert performed, the shots of the audience were actually quite revealing.....most people just stood there, barely moving. I would love to have been able to see their faces, but the shots were from behind.
As he said this morning on CBS...he got carried away with his performance...he is used to theater work and not worrying about cameras and network TV. So, when the adreneline got pumping, he got carried away. And did stuff that wasn't in rehearsal. Well......all I'm gonna say about that is that no one else on stage seemed to be surprised with the 'spontaneous' stuff that the pumping adreneline prompted!!! It all seemed very choreographed to me....I've done too much stage work to not know when something is being done for the first time. Others on stage would have been taken back a bit, or at least had different expressions on their faces.
I think he knows that he may have pushed too far, but won't go so far as to apologize. Says that female performers have done the exact same stuff. Well Adam....I don't care for it when they do it either. I have no problem with cutting edge, but please, make it something that I can watch with my dd and not have to look at her shocked expression. And she is not easily shocked!!!!

Hmmm. Adam's album is now number 4 on the itunes chart. Performance this morning was great on The Early Show. I don't see much damage at all.

Kris Allen sold about 65,000 albums in his first week. Adam is projected to sell over 200,000 in his first week based on sales so far. I guess the squeeky wheel is getting the grease.

There will be about 6 hits from his album, many of which are hauntingly beautiful.

What Glambert doesn't understand is that, men will not complain over Janet Jackson, Madonna or Britney, some men even encourage it. But if men see two guys making out on national television, the phone lines will be burning up. :rotfl: I thnk he is assuming mothers and grandmothers are complaining about their kids. They are not. I would bet dollars to donuts that other men are leading the charge against Glambert.

Yes, as Oscar Wilde said "The only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about".

I agree it was no different then an old Madonna performance. Difference is, Madonna was already a pop icon and established herself. Adam doesn't have the clout yet to attempt something that daring. He comitted career suicide.

Iconic status has nothing to do with it. Men won't complain when 2 women are kissing. Bottom line. When 2 guys kiss.....??

Meh that happened to all the popular finalist. People will buy the first album out of curiousity. But it's a matter of staying power. You can't judge it by the initial release. Adam was a favorite, so naturally the Idol loyaltist will rush for the first album.

I'm a man. It didn't bother me in that way. It's just the times. There's hardly anything to shock value anymore.

I watched his new video for the song, I don't remember the name but watching the video and hearing his voice (still too screachy at points for me) If I would have heard it on the radio, I would like the song and actually I do like the song BUT the video is soooooooo tame compared to his performance on national TV and THAT is shocking to me. He could have gotten away with so much more on the video.

A PP said it so right. He should have come out, danced a little and sang his heart out. He didn't want to sing he wanted to dance and think its Broadway, it wasn't. I do think he will be a flash in the pan. His look will only take him so far and then it will get old. I love the 80's but it is all a fad. It's a shame because I think he could have went far.

I could see him playing Sweeney Todd on Broadway but not being a Pop Star.

Madonna was not a pop icon though, when she writhed around the stage in that white bustier/wedding dress back in the 80s and shocked everyone. She was a pretty new artist back then.

No she was already popular from her previous album. Like a Virgin mainstreamed her more but her lucky Star album raised her to popularity

I disagree that his performance was career suicide. As a matter of fact, by the amount of support he's gotten since ABC canned his interview I would say the opposite. CBS, of course, picked him up for this morning and he did an interview and performed three songs. He sounded much better than he did at the AMA's. Tons of people came out in support of him and CBS received thousands of emails and calls in support.

Did anyone notice Janet Jackson setting the tone for the show with crotch grabbing? Where's the complaining about that?

I wonder why Adam's getting singled out? :rolleyes1

Music videos and performances are very sexual these days. I don't find him any more edgy than Beyonce. Personally, I don't like any of it.

Yes, but she was by no means an Icon at that point, her career was still very new.

But my point being is she had established herself as an genuine artist (if you call it that. I'm by no means a fan, just a guy with alot of music knowledge). Adam just sang or should I say squealed covers karoake style until this point.
It was a risky move, that I think didn't go well at all.

I'm really not sure how you can compare a crotch grab dance move to getting simulated oral sex on network television.

I don't really care what happens to his career. If I hear a song I like, I'll listen. His voice isn't appealing to me but I'm not going to shut him down even though I think comparing his performance to rolling around on stage in a wedding dress or grabbing your own crotch is apples and oranges.

He's not. What he did was completely different. Adam's performance involved other people. The kiss was aggressive but that wasn't a big deal to him. It was what he did to the suspended dancer and the guy near the stairs that crossed the line.

As for CBS, shame on them. I am sure a whole lot of people wrote to them in protest as well. They stooped to the same level Leno did after the whole Kanye mess.

I'm going to agree with most people and say the singing was pretty bad, especially after the great voice we saw on AI.

However, as for the preformance.... while I can understand why some people are so mad I don't see what the problem is....he kissed a boy... whats the big deal?! He likes boys! Theres no need to tar and feather the guy for his sexual orientation. At least he's gay and kissing a boy and not just doing it for show (ie - britney and madonna)

I dont have a problem with the preformace, and as someone who's friends with alot of younger gay men, I know they were quite pleased with the preformace because it was so in your face.

Honestly, that's the only thing that made me cringe when I watched the performance. It was not, by far, his best performance vocally. And he's admitted that after the fact.

As far as we've supposedly come in this country, there are things we are still rather intolerant about. Boy on boy seems to be one of them. While I can agree, it's probably not 'classy' to simulate oral sex (regardless of which sex it may be with) on national tv, I don't think it's something he should be vilified for and I don't think it's going to end his career. If R. Kelly can pee on a teenager and still have some semblance of a career, I think Adam Lambert is going to be ok. If anything, this 'controversy' is only going to give him a lot of press right when he's releasing his first album.

It actually wasn't different. Janet Jackson's crotch grabbing was not her own crotch, it was a full on crotch grab of another male dancer. No one has said a word about it. He was standing in front of her, she reached under between his legs and grabbed his crotch.

Sorry, I still think shoving a dude's face in his junk was over the top.
