Diaper Rash? Any helpful hints?

My daughter is 2 and has had to take Amoxicillan for the first time and has gotten an extreme diaper rash, she was never a child with diaper rash as an infant but this one id horrible. I have been putting A and D ointment on it and letting her run around without anything on her bottom.

Anyone with any home remedies or any advise on how to get this to go away fast? My doctor had me discontinue the antibiotic because of the rash. When should I contact her family doctor?

I would contact her doctor right away because if she's not on the Amoxicillan anymore, than she needs to continue her treatment with a different prescription.

The doctor is also the best one to ask what you should do for the rash.

I swear, swear, swear by Gold Bond Medicated Baby Powder. My dd's rash would begin to clear up after just one application. It's a little more expensive than regular powder or creams, but really worth it.

I would contact her treating physician. Your doctor sounds like he is assuming that she may be allergic to Amox if he advised you stop it. It would be very unusual to have an "allergic diaper rash". Allergic rashes are difuse and often itchy. She may still require the antibiotic. What is clearly possible is that she has a fungal or a "yeast" type of diaper rash. That is not unusual following antibiotic therapy and it can be treated with perscription topical ointments if that is the case. I also like Desitin. It has Zinc oxide and is more protective than the A &D.

I agree with contacting the Dr., but in the meantime, Aveno makes an oatmeal bath - add it to the bath water, and let her sit in it for a bit, it should help sooth her skin and relieve some of the discomfort.

Poor baby, my DD was really prone to BAD BAD diaper rashes (real sensitive skin) and we tried everything and Desitin works real well.

Let her run around without anything on her, no cream no nothing and then when you have to put desitin/diaper combo. Also do not use wipes,it will make it worse, even the sensitive ones.


We have used desitin in our home so much DD thinks it makes everything better (like a tummy ache)

If baby is still nursing put some breastmilk on the diaper rash!

Breastmilk also cures pink eye!

I used a combination of Triple Paste and Gold Bond Medicated Baby Powder, after an oatmeal bath. Letting her go without a diaper is a good idea, she needs to get air to the area.

I wonder if it is a yeast infection that comes with having had to take an antibiotic....there is one that is a prescription drug and then they have said in a pinch to try the anti fungal over the counter med for athletes feet and such......BUT your pediatrician may want a script drug to help it.....THIS medication works fast......poor thing

It sounds like a yeast infection to me. I have a in home daycare and I have 3 teething infants right now. I swear by a mixture of equal parts of Destin/A&D ointment and cortaid creme. It works better than anything I've ever tried before. One of the local peds. recommended it to one of my families.

try pure corn starch! My ds had an awful rash and i just emptied out a bottle of baby powder and put the corn starch in it. It cleared it up in no time. That is the only thing I use now.

This helps to neutralize acid before and after they are wet and has a cooling effect while drying. You can apply other creams over the Maalox after it dries. It worked amazingly well!

I had a child who was very ill as a baby and needed lots of meds, ergo, lots of very nasty, red, weepy, bleeding yeast infection type diaper rashes. The NICU pediatrician told me to put plain old Maalox on it. Do not feed - wipe it on the rash. Boy did it work like a charm! In fact, the pediatrician also told us to NOT use desitin or any kind of heavy cremes on a yeast diaper rash.

But of course, ALWAYS check with your pediatrician before you try a home remedy!

This helps to neutralize acid before and after they are wet and has a cooling effect while drying. You can apply other creams over the Maalox after it dries. It worked amazingly well!

For the baby diaper yeasty infection, our pediatrician told us the same thing with the maalox, only to mix in a small bit of otc monistat and use the cotton ball.

DD got some nasty diaper rashes as a baby. Each one got worse and worse until I finally had to take her to the dermatologist. He prescribed Elidel, which worked like a charm. Thank goodness DD has mostly grown out of the diaper rashes.

I agree with others -- this could be a yeast infection. Call your pediatrician.

Definitely contact the doctor because there are different types of treatment for different kinds of rashes. My doctor recommended Maalox and it worked. I also like Dr. Bordeaux Butt Paste. It seems like when I gave my kids amoxicilan, the doctor also recommended feeding them yogurt. Does that sound familar??

i agree with the dr. bordeaux butt paste.. works great on my dd..

Since she's been on Amoxil, I'm betting this is a yeast infection. Amoxil kills bad germs and the good ones which normally keep the normal yeast on our skin in check. so if the normal germs are dead, yeast can proliferate very quickly. There's no better place to grow yeast than a baby's diaper--dark, warm,& wet: the perfect environment.

Try Lotrimin or Monistat at every diaper change. You can use a little cortaid & desitin to assist,but it won't kill the yeast. Anything with clotrimizole or miconizole in it will work.

I agree about calling your doc and the yeast infection. Ask your doc about giving her acidophilus. It's the active culture in the yogurt. You can buy it over-the-counter by the vitamins. If you get a capsule filled with powder, you can easiliy open it and sprinkle it over applesauce, yogurt, etc.
For regular type rashes, Pinxav, is great. It's OTC, but you usually have to ask the pharmacist for it. A little goes a long way, and it does stain. It's also said to be great for zits!
