diagnosed with flu, told we can't have tamiflu rx

Thanks for all the input, very different experiences everyone has had!

In hindsight, I wish I hadn't taken her to the Minute Clinic but I'll take it as a lesson learned. If I had posted here before hand, I would have gotten the "you shouldn't use a dis board for medical advice" LOL

103 fever this AM but feeling better this afternoon so maybe it wasn't even the flu? It was a clinical diagnosis at the minute clinic not a flu test.

I am sure it probably was / is the flu with a fever that high. The Centers for Disease control is supporting clinical diagnosis right now for cases that are not severe enough to land you a hospital admission.
As long as she improves and does well - I would follow the advice of the provider at Minute Clinic. That is quite the hit to the pocket book though - I have to say that I would be a little irritated to pay $100 bucks and walk away empty handed, even though it is the correct treatment. :worried: Yuck!

My 13 yr old woke up with the classic flu symptoms. I took her to a Minute Clinic (should be Hour Clinic, took almost 2 hours to be seen). She slept in the car while waiting. Dr (nurse?) confirmed it was the flue and told us rest, fluids and tylenol. I asked about Tamiflu to reduce symptoms and time of flu - that was really the only reason I took her was for the RX. She said they are only doing it for high risk groups. She first said the general population is over using anitviral meds so they aren't working as well (my child has never had an antiviral and on antibiotics once in her life). When I pushed, she said they have been advised to only give RX for high risk.

I am guessing there is a shortage. Wish they had posted that on the door to the clinic so I could have saved my $100 and 2 hours of time.

Wondering if i should call her pediatrician in the morning and see if he will give us the RX - closing in on those 48 hours that I have heard is best for Tamiflu.

My aunt contracted the flu over the holidays and got the prescription for Tamiflu but wound up getting a secondary infection as result of the flu. But she wasn't high risk other than she works in the NICU and can't get the shot. Her mother in law and husband were also given a prescription for it just incase.

Unless you had a test that confirmed the flu, I have a hard time that anybody was over the flu in 3 to 4 days. The course of the flu is longer than that, unless you also had a flu shot which gave you some antibodies.

Kid tested positive for flu.
Only symptom was 102 fever.
Began Tamiflu less than 8 hours later.
24 hours later, he felt fine and was completely symptom free.

Ok, with Tamiflu, but without?

I have had the Flu several times and it was indeed confirmed. I always am over it within 72 hours, usually more like 24-48 hours with no medications.

The one exception to this was when I got the Flu shot and it took me over a week to get over the flu when I got it.
