I received a call from my Dr. this morning telling me that my repeat blood sugar test came back high (140 fasting) , so he is officialy dxing me as diabetic.

I have an appointment to go in and see him on Thursday to discuss diet and medication.
DH and I have both been on a lowfat/low sugar diet for a month now, so I feel I have the diet part under control. But I really didn't want to have to go on medication.

I am so sad, I could just cry.

I hope that you'll be able to treat it with diet and exercise. :grouphug: I hope your doctor appointment goes well.

If taking medication is the worst thing you have to endure then consider yourself very lucky. No need to be sad. Sorry you have diabetes, but many people take many meds every day and it doesn't cramp their lifestyle.

I'm so sorry, but at least it is usually quite manageable and you are already on your way with a good diet. Does it run in your family?

I understand your feelings. I felt the same way ten years ago when I was diagnosed. It is an adjustment, but you can do it. There are several different oral medications that are very effective. I would strongly recommend a diabetes education class that many local hospitals have available. They are good at teaching to read food labels, how to shop, how to test your blood, and often bring in nutritionists(sp?) to help with diet. Good luck.

after I was diagnosed I had a year to keep it under control with diet and exercise.........see if he can give you some more time to do this.......I also went to a diabetic clinic.......I had 9 visits with different types of people....Diabetic nutritionist, dietician.....exercise ...diabetic educator.....and we sometimes were a group of ten or so....I got so much out of going.....hope he tells you to do that too.....I am on a 45 carb per meal.....like breakfast, lunch and supper, and then fifteen carbs for my snack .....Hope you can do okey......
I know about taking to many meds.......I line them up and hopefully this problem wont add another to my line...GOOD LUCK

You will be fine. Most likely you won't have to take insulin, if thats what your worried about. I am sure these meds will work for you. Sorry about the diagnosis, Good Luck!!

Type 1 or 2? (Or can adults be diagnosed w/ type 1?)

DS6 was diagnosed type 1 this past August. It isn't easy, but is not as bad as it seems in the beginning.

I am sure that many people have things worse, but when you 1st hear something like this, it is very overwhelming and it does make you feel pretty low.

OP, try not to worry too much. Things will get better and if my 6 year old can go from having to be held down to be given a shot to almost giving them to himself, you will be fine!

i'm so sorry. It was such a shock when my husband was diagnosed. It took us about 2 months to settle into the idea. Grieving for your lost health is pretty darn normal, no matter how lucky you are in other ways.

My mom was recently diagnosed as diabetic. She does not need medicine. And medicine does not always mean needles. Glucose can be controlled by pills now.

She went through a wealth of diabetic education classes where she learned about eating right and how to use the monitor. She is adjusting well.

I am also dieting and excercising along with her. Since diabetes is hereditary, I want to get myself in good shape to prevent it if I can!

A hug for you.

My DH has type 1 diabetes, and he was diagnosed at age 20. It's been over 10 years now since his diagnosis, and he's doing great. I'm supposing you have type 2 (most diabetics are type 2), which is in some ways a different ball of wax. But as you get used to your new routine--whatever it is--it will become routine.

:grouphug: I am a T2 diabetic. Like an idiot I spent about 4 years in denial, but thankfully have awakened to the reality of my condition. I can just imagine the emotions you must be going through. I was right there about 6 weeks ago.

One thing to remember is that this something you will have for the rest of your life. Embrace it. In some ways diabetes is a gift in that through diet and exercise and necessary meds you will be living a healthier lifestyle than most peopel around you. And that WILL pay off in the long run. It's just that people like you and me have weak little pancreases :goodvibes

I have lost significant weight; my blood sugar dropped rapidly to normal levels; and I feel better today than I have for the last several years. Am I glad I got diabetes? No. But I sure as shootin' am dead serious about facing this monster and not letting it get the best of me. Start now by checking your feet every day; get regular eye exams; exercise lots; count your carbs. These steps will make a difference. I keep telling myself that this is not some diet or short term thing I am doing; this is a way of eating and behaving that I will follow from here on out.

Bless you as you come to terms with this news. Pick up Gretchen Becker's book about living with diabetes for the first year http://www.amazon.com/First-Year-Type-Diabetes-Essential/dp/1569245460 . It is a great read. I also highly recommend the message boards at the American Diabetes Assoc website. Theer are kind and helpful folks there who have far more experience and wisdom than me. They have been a great help to me. http://community.diabetes.org/n/pfx/forum.aspx?redirCnt=2&nav=index&webtag=amdiabetesz

Feel free to PM me and I'll try to help any other way I can.

Peace!

I am also a diabetic. Not type 1 or 2 (long story) but I do take insulin via an insulin pump. I wish you the best. It doesn't have to mean the end of life as you know it. Hang in there.

Diabetes doesn't mean you have lost your health - it means you have a potentially serious health condition. Diet and exercise can help a lot in controlling the disease. It is not necessarily sugar that drives up your glucose - carbs are the real killer. Have they tested for hbAIC yet? That is a simple blood test that gives your doctor a much better look at how you are doing over time at controlling your blood sugar levels. And as others have said, even if you do need medication, there are many oral meds that can help. Insulin isn't always necessary for Type II diabetics. As someone else suggested, join a group - they'll have lots of tips to share. Also, the American Diabetes Association publishes a pretty good magazine called Diabetes Forecast that has the latest news on managing the disease. Life and diet will be different as you learn to manage the disease, but you learn to deal with things. Life is still pretty good as far as I am concerned 16 years after diagnosis.

Omg! Thankyou from the bottom of my heart for all of your kind words and support. I just knew posting this morning was the right thing to do.

I do realize that taking the diabetic meds is not the end of the world. And I have endured(and conquered) worse medical stuff. I survived endometrial cancer 10 years ago!!!

I think I just need to take some time to digest this new life hurdle I have been thrown.
And knowing that I have DIS friends to support me means the world :grouphug:

To those that have offered PM support...(Zippa D Doodah)..I just might take you up on that,

So sorry for your diagnosis! The good news is that most of the time, diabetes can be controlled by diet! I have a friend whos father was on an insulin pump but after going on a low carb diet, went completely off of insulin!! Beware of some of the diabetic info that allows refined carbs, though. There is some great info out there, but there is also some that is flawed.

You can do this!!!

A very helpful site for all of you diabetic's out there! I am a former type 1 diabetic and am now insulin free due to a rare successful Pancreas Transplant Alone!

Insulin is not a cure!
