DH is pushing for us to get 2 dogs from the pound

Ohhh, she is so cute! She looks so relieved and happy to be in the car! Enjoy your new sweetie and keep us posted!

We adopt pound dogs too. We adopted our beagle when she was 5 yr old and I swear she was asking me to get her out of there. She wasn't barking or whining but making these noises like she was trying to talk to me.

My aunt and uncle went through an almost identical situation. Their beloved dog had died and decided (after some time) to look for a new dog to adopt. They ended up finding two dogs. The first was adorable and lovable, the second had been heavily abused and growled when you even looked at her. They knew she would never be adopted. They went that day to take home one, but left with two. It has now been a year, the dogs are best friends, and sissy(the abused dog) is flourishing.

Good luck, and THANK YOU FOR ADOPTING! :goodvibes

So far she's been very well behaved. She doesn't like the dog food I bought her (my old dog's favorite) and doesn't like the treats he used to like either. I guess we all have a learning curve. Since she was surrendered to the pound and not a stray, I got her veterinary records going back to her birth. She was born on June 1, 2008. No one is quite sure of her breed, but she has a somewhat wiry coat. She's an absolute darling!

One of my dogs didn't eat for days after we brought her home. Not even treats. My other dog would finish her food so we had to feed them seperately. Maybe she doesn't feel comfortable in her enviroment yet and once she does she will start to eat.

She is a cutie, best of luck with her. She actually looks like she as some Jack Russell terrier in her:)

What a cutie. It's great that you have all her medical records. One of our adopted dogs wouldn't eat any dog food until the end of the day when she realized no human food scraps were coming her way. She even starts licking the dishes in the dishwasher when I have the door open and am loading the dinner dishes.
I had the picture of your new dog open on my Ipad and my dh said what a great looking dog.

She is so cute. You might try hand feeding her at first to get her going. She may just be nervous though. Also, dogs get used to their food, can you find out what she was being fed previously?

You could try adding a few bits of chicken in with the food. (I still do that with my dogs, they are spoiled). Also, you can ask for dog food samples at your local pet shop. When I asked at Petco, they gave me several small bags to try. My dogs like Blue Buffalo chicken and rice.

I tried the chicken (buried it in her food). She nosed around until she found the chicken and ate only that. :rolleyes1

I don't know what she was eating at the pound. I think they rely a lot on donated food so it's whatever. :confused3

She is not underweight, so we can wait it out until she decides to eat. I will try the Petco samples idea.

She is very cute! You can also boil chicken breasts & rice. My old dog had to eat that for several weeks when he had a stomach bug. I boiled the chicken breasts then cooked the rice in the chicken broth per our vets instructions, gradually mixing in the dry food.

You have a great vet. When my dog had a stomach bug I was told to buy prescription diet which was lamb an rice or chicken and rice @ $3 can it was very expensive.

Looks like she just doesn't like dry food. I poured some chicken broth (homemade leftovers) over the dry and she ate it. DH went out and bought a can of wet food just to try and she gobbled that up as well. I hate feeding wet. It is expensive and bulky to store and it smells bad. I will have to figure out something else, like maybe mixing the wet with the dry for a while.

You might want to consider a carb source other than rice. I have been reading a lot lately about high arsenic content in rice. She's beautiful & I'm glad that you picked the least adoptable of the 2.

It was so nice reading this thread and all the posts from the caring people taking in the shelter dogs. Unfortunately I've read way too many very sad stories lately about bad people doing bad things to dogs. You have no idea how much I needed reading this thread.

Has a vet checked her teeth? My dog was not eating her dry food and it was because she had a couple of loose teeth that the vet removed at her annual dental cleaning.

It's probably just an adjustment period though. My dog used to grab her food and run away with it, piece by piece, because she was used to other dogs taking it. She finally settled down but it took several weeks.

God bless all of you who have adopted shelter pets. By that one generous act you have changed the lives of so many wonderful animals and yourselves and your families as well.

I truely want to cry knowing that there are so many good people still out there....
