DH is pushing for us to get 2 dogs from the pound

I have 2 rescues both small dogs 9 and 6 lbs if I would have gotten them both at the same time I would have been going crazy with my first fur baby I waited a year and got used to her and her personality after then I got my second fur baby its ALOT of work but they love each other and play so much and not to mention my DD's love both of them and both dogs are very good with them, I say only get one for now congrats on your decision to rescue :thumbsup2

I am not sure about this. Our pound puppy whom we adopted 7 years ago died in January. I have succumbed to DH's and DDs' pleading for a new dog and we went to the pound. One dog had no interest in her so we put in an application. I think she will be a good fit for us and I am afraid she will be put down since no one seems to want her. Another dog was there who was just surrendered. He was gorgeous and younger, but hadn't been evaluated yet so we did not look at him seriously. Now we got a call from the pound that he is available and we are going to see him tomorrow. My family is now pushing to get both dogs (if they get along). These are not tiny dogs. They are big. One is over 50 pounds and I think the other is around 70. They will be expensive and take up a lot of room. I have never had more than one dog at a time...but they are both so cute.

Sorry for the long, rambling post. I just want opinions from disinterested parties who haven't been hypnotized by doggie eyes.

If the dog had no interest in her, then why would you put in an application for him ? cesar has some great ways on how to pick a dog for yourself and none of them include getting a dog because they might be put down if you don't.

We just came back from the pound. We will only be adopting one dog at this time. I feel she will need a little adjustment period. Additionally, she seems very laid back and would not do well with a bouncy youngster.

Thank you for your input. It was really helpful.

I think you made a smart decision based on the needs of the dog you adopted. :)

Congratulations! Usually the dog chooses you. I think you will be really pleased. I have 2 females and 2 males and the females were much easier to train. Enjoy and post some pics. I also love "the Dog Whisperer".

She has been there since Feb 2011? Awww :(
So glad she is going home with you, she needs some love!

That's not quite right. She was fostered for a while and for some reason the foster home couldn't keep her. She hasn't actually been at the shelter for over a year, just a week or so.

Congrats on your new addition! She is adorable (her face is so sweet). We adopted our puppy from a shelter and I can't imagine our lives without her.

Looks like such a sweetie! Please post more pics when you get a chance.

Congrats on your new pup!

With that being said, once we got older, our parents allowed for a 2nd dog. My mom took in my lab/dane mix to live with her Golden and a golden mix. The Golden and my pup were similar in age and they had to be put to sleep within weeks of each other due to age related problems :sad1:

For me, if we got dogs, we would stagger the adoptions so that we would not have to go through that experience again. It was nice having them grow together but to lose them together was absolutely heartbreaking :sad1:

That is my greatest fear. Three of our dogs are 9 yrs old and the 4 th is 2 yrs younger.

The lady from the pound is coming today for a home visit. Keeping all fingers and toes crossed that it goes well. They sure are careful about placement at this place. When we adopted 7 years ago, we also had a home visit. I wish I could remember what they asked.

I should have started listening to Cesar before I got our 2nd pound puppy...:headache: they're both cute, but they're a LOT cuter if they were 'only' dogs rather than together.....oh well, live and learn.... now that I AM listening to Cesar,he's got some good advice for making them behave though!

Oh please keep us all posted! Rescuing a pound puppy is fabulous. I also volunteer at shelter and luckily my neighborhood has a two dog limit so I can't bring them all home. Love is indeed adoptable.

I have 2 rescues. We already had an older lab when we adopted the first, an energetic pit bull mix puppy named Triton. They were inseparable and the pup put a spring in the old man's step. We lost our lab right after Christmas and I wanted to adopt another right away but my family thought we should wait until the weather was better. Training a pup in New England in winter is no fun. We adopted again in May and I think we waited a little too long. We introduced them slowly, away from home as recommended. Our new Shepard mix, Lily, immediately fell in love with Triton, who pretended she didn't exist for a week. I think he got too accustomed to being an only. They have a healthy sibling relationship now. Lily is Triton's muscle when something is scary. He's the wimpiest pit bull mix ever so lots of things are scary. Once in awhile Triton will play with her for a minute or tow. She still adores him, he is mostly indifferent.

The people from the home visit will make sure that that little cutie is a good mix. It looks like your shelter could use a photographer and a website person for the site. Know any high school kids that need some community service hours? We are lucky enough to have a pro photog volunteer and we give them all names and stuff. Sometimes we take donations on facebook for people to name puppies.

Make sure to remember even with older dogs there is an adjustment period. From all the shelter people, thank you very much!

We passed inspection! ;)

We will pick up the dog later today and take pictures to post for you guys.

That's wonderful! Don't forget local SPCA shelters offer reduced vet services.. shots, medicines, flea applications... I always took my dog to a private vet and it cost me well over $300 each time (once a year). This past year money is soo tight I took hime to the Norfolk SPCA... $100!! Rabies, shots and heartworm medicine and a toe nail clip! Granted they did not do a full physical but they would have if they didnt think he was healthy... One a side note we have picked up another dog..my brother got shipped to another state and we took his dog also.. Soo I now have two dogs (both under 25lbs) and they get along so well...
