Dh interested in electronic cigarettes to help him quit

My MIL has had excellent luck with these. She's tried a number of other things before (including a medication), but has had a hard time quitting due to family and work stress. This last year has been really hard (lost both her parents), but as far as I know, has only been using the electronic cigarettes this whole year.

My son's friend works at the mall - he laughs because everyone who works that booth actually smokes.
Go figure!!

I actually have not heard of these, but I wanted to just warn you about any type of quit device taht has nicotine in it. It is just as easy to become addicted to THAT as it is smoking. Sure, you won't get tars and stuff from a patch, but you still get straight nicotine. My DH works at Walmart and sees the same guys buying patches and gum every week for YEARS!

I quit by using meds - Wellbutrin. It cuts off the WANT of smoking so you can just stop, but you ahve to WANT to quit (if that makes sense). The first time I quit, I 'weaned' myself, by smoking 10 today, 9 next week, 8 next week, etc. All that did was prolong the withdrawl symptoms.

Cold turkey is still the best way to go. He will go thru what is commonly known as Hell Week. Check out this very helpful website: http://www.quitnet.com/library/guides/Quitnet/. You can get all sorts of info there as well as just googling. One tip that really helped me during Hell Week was to drink OJ with a TBS of Cream of Tartar mixed into it. Nicotine doesn't like acid, so the acid of the OJ and CoT drives it out of your system. No nicotine in your system means NO CRAVINGS.

Give him lots of love, but don't pressure him. It's great that he's ready to do this and is exploring options. Guide him to check out other options. He can do this and you will both be better off!

I just wanted to say, that when I quit smoking, many years ago (I smoked only for a few years, and only a few cigarettes a day) I did actually find it comforting to hold my hand up to my mouth and inhale. First...the act of inhaling is very relaxing...even better when there is no smoke! Although of course at the time you MISS the smoke.

Yes, you are addicted to the nicotine, but you are also addicted to "the works." Packing a new pack of cigs, the act of lighting a cig, the deep inhale on that first drag...so i do think electronic cigs may help.

Good luck to DH...it *can* be done!!!

I thought the point of the electronic cigarettes was for smokers to be able to smoke in non-smoking areas. The ones I know who have quit smoking did it with medication.

He has tried everything from cold turkey, Wellbutrin (made him sick), hypnosis, nicorette, you name it....over and over he has tried.

I'm sorry to hear that he's had such a rough go! (Wellbutrin made me so happy and mellow...). He may need to try cold turkey again and have you give him some tough love. Have him try the OJ trick, and the 'faux smoking' inhale that another poster mentioned (I had luck with Dum Dums because there was a white stick in my peripheral vision that my mind translated into a cigarette).

Hang in there! There is a way for him and he can do this.

I've used them, and love them! I haven't quit yet, but only for lack of "want" right now. I know the moment will strike when I just *know* it's time.

I used them when I was in the hospital twice in November. I made sure I showed all the nurses and aides, so that if they came in while I was using it they would know what it was. It worked great for satifying those worst cravings, like right after a meal, or after waking up. And no, there is no odor. I blew the water vapor directly into the face of a non-smoker (at their request) and they could not smell anything. As a matter of fact, when word got around the employee's desk, many of them stopped by to ask about them, either for themselves or a loved one. One of the doctors even wrote down information about the e-cig to recommend to his other patients.

Yes, it is a nicotine replacement system, but you can wean that down to 0% as well. the cartridges come in different strengths, so you can go down to just flavored with no nicotine, for those who just like the act of smoking.

I highly recommend them. If you want, I know of a terrific company with great customer service. Don't know if I can post the name here, but you can pm me if you want for the name.

Good luck!

Oh, one more thing, don't buy the ones at the mall kiosk. From what I've read they're overpriced and don't work very well.

This is a great site with a lot of great information:

I smoke Blucigs electronic cigarettes and they helped me stop smoking. I feel my health improving every day because of them.

There used to be another thread about electronic cigarettes here in which I wrote quite extensively.

However, after smoking for 40 years I had my last real cigarette in April 2009 due to electronic cigarettes. Like others have said, they are essentially nicotine gum that you smoke.

True, a year later I am still using the e-cigarette. However, my lung capacity has improved, etc. Plus, unlike 'cold turkey' attempts where I would eventually end up smoking again during some stressful period (once after being off for 8 months) I have had no danger of relapse so long as I have the e-cigarette.

I finally got my brother-in-law (who is disabled and sits at home smoking two packs a day) to start using a new e-cigarette called the eGo (which I now use); two weeks later and he has told me that he has no desire to smoke a real cigarette. He also likes the money he is saving.

Look through that forum cited above by another poster.

I buy my supplies from a Chinese company: http://www.heaven-gifts.com/

They are the main supplier for most dealers here in the USA. Fast shipping and very good prices (I pay via Paypal). However, I buy my liquid from USA manufacturers. Johnson Creek Smoke Juice is very good, for instance.

Smoked a pack a day for 30 years until 4 months ago thanks to the e-cig. I still use the e-cig a couple times a day, using no nicotine. I cannot believe how easy it has been for me to give up real cigarettes and I will do all in my power to remain cigarette free.

Tomorrow will be one week tobacco and nicotine free for me and my husband. We owe it to our e-cig that we purchased from Vapor4Life.

We found that giving up nicotine AND the ritual was too much stress and failed every time. Last Saturday, we gave up regular cigarettes and started using the no nicotine cartridges. The first 3 days were rough with some problems focusing and some dull headaches but because we could still puff, there was no anxiety as we detoxed from the nicotine.

Went to the parks Monday and Tuesday and continued to vape in the smoking section and got lots of questions. Hopefully, we turned at least one person on to the idea that they too could quit this way.

We'll be weaning off the ritual now that we don't have anymore nic fits. I am down to less than 20 puffs a day on the e-cig which is equivalent to puffing 2 of my old cigs but spread out throughout the day.

I'll keep my ecig charged and handy forever if I have to, just so that I never, EVER have to give in to going back to a regular cigarette.

Good luck and hang in there to all trying or hoping to quit!!!!!

Today was 6 weeks on the Njoy e-cig. I am on the 1.2% nicotine cartridge. The Njoy come in regular & menthol and both flavors come in 1.8%, 1.2%, 0.6% & no nicotine. I love mine. When I go to get a new bottle of cartridges I am going to go down to the 0.6%. But I need to get through the first weekend in June (my dance recital) before I reduce the strength.

I am went to these because I am a new grandma. My granddaughter was born last Thursday and I wanted to be smoke free for when she was born.

I agree that you have to want to quit to be able to quit. I have tried to quit when I really did not want to and could not do it. I quit once before with the patch and did fine for 2 years. I started when Hurricane Opal came thru FL. I tried with the patch again and it just did not work and I had nightmares.

Here is the link for the Njoy:

The starter pack comes with 2 batteries, a charger, a vaporizer & 5 cartridges. I spent $84 for the starter pack and a bottle of 5 additional cartridges. Today I purchased a car charger that also plugs into my computer too.

Mari, CONGRATULATIONS on your new granddaughter and your decision to quit!!!
