Delta Skymiles Member earning miles on Continental, Northwest, or United flights

If I understand it correctly, Delta has an alliance with Continental, Northwest, and United Airlines, which means I can book air with any of these 4 airlines and receive Skymiles with Delta? Right?

What I don't understand, is exactly how I do that. How do I get a Continental, NW or UA flight to credit miles to my Delta Skymiles account?

For instance, when I access Continental's website, they ask for my onepass # (which I have), but how do I book the flight and have the miles credited to my Delta Skymiles account? I tried punching in my Skymiles # on Continental's site (thinking maybe they shared accounts or something), but, of course that didn't work.

Most of my miles are with Delta, and I think it's great that they are "sharing miles" or whatever, but, of course I want them credited to Delta.

TIA to anyone who can clear this up for me:)

Recording Mileage Credit

Delta/Delta Connection®: Whenever making your reservation via delta.com, with Delta Reservations or with a travel agent, be sure to provide your SkyMiles number. The name on the reservation must match the name on the account for auto-tracking of mileage.
Airline Partners: Provide your SkyMiles number at time of booking or check in for each flight.
Hotel and Car Rental Partners: Each time you make a qualifying reservation, and at time of hotel check-in or car rental pickup, provide your SkyMiles account number and name as shown on your SkyMiles membership card. Mileage is credited to the member whose name appears on the bill for the hotel stay or car rental. Allow six to eight weeks for all partner mileage credit to appear on your SkyMiles statement.
All Other Partners: Provide your SkyMiles number and name as shown on your SkyMiles membership card at time of transaction. Allow six to eight weeks for all partner mileage credit to appear on your SkyMiles statement.

O.k. so, I just provide my skymiles # at time of check-in (I've done this before with car partners).

BUT, if I book on Continental, NW, or UA's website, do I provide my FF # for their program, or none at all (is this possible?)

I did check Delta's website (and Continental's and NW and UA), BTW, but I looked under airline partners since that was what I was trying to do; book a flight with an airline partner and accrue skymiles:)

Not sure how it works with your partners but when I fly on a codeshare with United I get USAirways miles if I want.

I would suggest calling Delta and have them explain it to you. You also can usually request miles after the fact by sending in your boarding pass and they will issue the miles to your acct.

Do you book online, and if so, do you provide any FF# at that time?

Thanks, this has been enlightening.

It depends sometimes I do sometimes I have them add it at the airport. I travel for business and sometimes the travel dept. forgets to put in my ff number. Never had a problem receiving the miles when they put it in at the airport.

I would still call them and ask if you booking through the other airlines site. That way you could relax about it.

In the last couple of years, I've always been able to find the best fare with Delta. It's good to know I can still earn miles if I find a better fare with one of their codeshare partners.

United is not part of the NWA, Delta, and Continental alliance.

Really? It's listed on Delta's website as an airline partner along with Continental, NWA, and a host of other airlines:confused:

Can you combine those frequent flyer miles with Delta to get an award ticket? In the past, American and USAir allowed it (not anymore though)

United is an airline partner with Delta, however they are not part of a codeshare alliance like Continental, NW and Skyteam members. It's simply a partnership where you can earn and use frequent flyer miles on the other airline. For example, say your a Delta skymiles member. You can earn skymiles when you fly United, and you can use your skymiles to get an award ticket on United (on a limited basis). That's about it.

My initial query was being able to earn skymiles on a Continental, NW, or UA flight (airline partners), which you and safetymom have answered so graciously... thank you:)

But, now you got me wondering.... what's the advantage of a codeshare alliance? Is that when your flight is delayed or canceled, and the airline will find you a flight on another airline (codeshare partner)?

Ahhhh... the thirst for knowledge.:)
You truly do learn something new everyday!

The advantage of a code share is when you need to fly somewhere that your ff doesn't fly or has limited flights. You can use your ff miles on their flights.

Example: I am flying on United but I get USAirways miles. You could use your USAirways ff miles to buy an award ticket with United.

I have included some links that talk about what happens if your flight is cancelled. The name escapes me at the moment but if your flight is cancelled they can assign your ticket to another airline if they have room. In some cases you can get ff miles on the original airline if the flight was cancelled and you used another airline.

Codeshare partners "share" flights. For example, Continental will allow Delta to sell a certain number of seats on specific Continental flights and vice versa. You can buy the ticket through Delta, but the flight will be operated by Continental.

Delta and United are not codeshare partners, so they do not do this. You can however earn and use frequent flyer miles on each other.

I've always wondered about this terminology, and the difference between the two... now I know:)

AND, I won't have to pass up a low fare with Delta's airline partners for the sake of skymiles.

Thanks again for so patiently explaining this to me (and for the links, safetymom)
