I know this should be on the transportation board but with leaving tomorrow I think I might get more answers (quicker) over here.:goodvibes

My sister and I just looked it up and it appears that the first checked bag is free! That would be great! Is this somthing new or has it always been free?

We've always flown Northwest but Delta just bought them out this past year.

Well, I just checked the Delta home page and it says that the first checked bag is $23 in advance (or $25 at the airport). I flew Delta to Orlando two weeks ago and that was the policy. If you are flying internationally, the first checked bag is free - otherwise there is a fee.

Not sure where you saw it was free, but from their site (bolding mine):

For travel within or between the United States and Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico:

* First checked bag: $23 USD/CAD* if checked in online or $25 USD/CAD* at the airport kiosk, ticket counter or curbside
* Second checked bag: $32 USD/CAD* online or $35 USD/CAD* at the airport

Here's the rules from Delta.com:

For travel within or between the United States and Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico:
First checked bag: $23 USD/CAD* if checked in online or $25 USD/CAD* at the airport kiosk, ticket counter or curbside
Second checked bag: $32 USD/CAD* online or $35 USD/CAD* at the airport
NOTE: Passengers traveling to or from Key West, Florida are limited to one checked bag.

For travel between the United States or Canada and Europe:
First checked bag: No fee applies
Second checked bag: 50 USD/CAD/EUR* if checked in online or 55 USD/CAD/EUR* at the airport

So, if you are travelling to Europe, the first is free. If you are just travelling within the U.S. and Canada and do not have elite status, the first one is $23 online or $25 at the airport. If you have elite status, the first one (at least) is free.

Yes, I'm seeing the within better! We read it wrong. Darn. Free would have been great!!:rotfl:

As it was I thought the checked bags were $15 and finidng out it's 25!! Ahhhh!:scared1:

If you get their Gold American Express card, you can get 1 free bag for you and I think up to 9 people on your reservation. The fee is normally $95 but it is waived for the first year. You also get 25,000 miles with your first purchase. I plan to get it before my October trip.

That is probably what you saw on their home page. It's right above the link for the card.

Yes, this is true. :thumbsup2

And if you fly in First Class in almost any airline you can check two bags per pasenger at no charge.

I'm flying Delta to Orlando tomorrow and the AMEX Gold/Platinum credit card thing is true.

I know. I think that's what my sister read. She's the one that called me this evening all excited and thus I posted here on the DIS.....instead of reading the page myself. I knew it was too good to be true.:rolleyes1

If you are at least a silver medallion member, its free.
