Why is there a delivery charge for pizza and other food delivery? The driver does not get this money. Does the delivery charge result in reducing the tip that the driver gets?

Don't worry, I tip 20%. But I am wondering what the delivery charge is actually paying for.

Years ago, there was not extra charges

My MIL used to deliver pizza. She was paid mileage, an hourly wage, and a $ amt for each pizza the went out with. She says the delivery charge is to off set some of that cost.

Around here there are no delivery charges if the order is over 10 or 12 dollars. Never heard of them. We always tip driver in cash. We may pay the place by card but always tip cash. I hate when places try to take percentage from the guys who actually do the driving.

My understanding is that the companies have expenses generated by whomever they have delivering the pizza. It might be mileage, as stated by someone, or paperwork to maintain the employee (expense), perhaps additional insurance to cover possible problems accident wise, etc.

Most of the deliver charges do not directly go back to the driver so tipping is absolutely necessary, that is how they make their living. Indirectly the charges are used to be able to maintain the extra expense of having a delivery person. It never ceases to amaze me how people can sit on their butts, at home, because they are to lazy or it is inconvenient to pick up the Pizza themselves and then get upset because there is an extra charge for it, like it should come out of the restaurants profits. I guess they could jack up the price of the pizza to cover it so it doesn't appear to be extra... but, it will be there, just hidden.

My DS delivers pizza for a local pizza place that is not a chain. He makes minimum wage but does not get $ for gas or mileage. There is a delivery charge on each order that he does not get - it goes back to the pizza shop/owner. He does get to keep any tips he makes.

None of the pizza places I use charges for delivery. But since they are paying an hourly wage to the driver while he is driving to your house, I can see that being used to off set that expense that the pizza shop owner has that he doesn't have when you pick up the pizza yourself.

My son delivers pizza for a nationally recognizable company. He is paid min. wage and .99 cents for each delivery for the company. Tips, he keeps. He uses his own car, pays his gas and insurance. More for insurance because he delivers pizza and could only find one company who would insure him. I think when you factor in mileage, he actually is losing money, compounded by the number of people who "stiff" him. If you order consistently and stiff the drivers, you will become known. I wouldn't recommend you do that! :crazy2:

Many many years ago when I did pizza delivery I think they charged 1 or 1.50 for deliver and I got 50 cents from the company for every delivery, plus my minimum wage. Tips were a big deal, and that's back when gas wasn't outrageous. I don't know how people can afford to do pizza delivery now. At all the companies around here people use their own cars.

From the other side,, as a customer, it annoys me they charge a delviery fee and then charge tax on the fee. We always make sure to tip good, but I think people would tip drivers better if they got rid of the delivery fee. The companies are still making a huge profit without it, no doubt.

I haven't seen free delivery in a long time. Even Dominoes charges a fee.
LOL. I can see Dominoes charging, they want $7.99 for a large pizza, Round Table charges $18 for a large, and the mom and pops charge $20.

Wow, I don't know what dominos charges here, but the local pizzerias charge between $10 - $12 for a large plain pie, plus most have a night a week with $7.99 pies.

Our favorite local place charges $16.99 for a large (16") cheese thin crust. I'm sure we could find a less expensive pizza but not a better tasting pizza.

We have 3 different places that are just about 1 mile of each other. We just order and go pick it up.

The most expensive I've found is $15.50, but it's a popular place that has been around for decades, they are one of two that doesn't deliver. In my tiny town, yellow pages listed 22 non chain pizzerias. They have to keep prices down to be competitive.

We have a couple of local places that are much more expensive than big chains. If we are serving lots of people we will get Papa Johns or if money it tight. If its just us, we will get from a local place. DS works nights at one of the local places and we will call him to bring a pizza home if money isn't too tight because a large pizza is over $20. They make their own sausage and also make their own dough and you can really taste the difference. They also put more toppings on them.

I'm confused - are you saying the delivery driver gets paid nothing except tips? Here, nobody works for free. It's much more like the situation described in the quote below. Delivery charges are to pay for the service, just like you pay for the food.

I delivered pizzas for Hungry Howies. They charged $1.75 for delivery of which I got .75. They were always a few dollars less than the other chains and rewarded you for coming and picking up the food. I get the logic but a lot of people don't and just see the extra charge. It's kinda like Disney having "free" parking at their hotels. Universal charges but if you don't drive you don't pay. Everyone pays for parking at Disney.

LOL. I haven't seen pizzas called "pies" in years. Yeah, Dominos and Little Ceasars start at $7.99, and fancier places are more expensive. Heck, DIGIORNO frozen in the store at Walmart is $5.50.
