What makes a tee shirt a tee shirt? My boss has decided that our daycare staff is no longer alowed to wear tee shirts. I have a few shirts that im unsure of (mostly things I wear ALOT anyways). Im frustrated because now im not sure what to wear anymore since tees are out and I refuse to get all dressy to teach preschoolers.

This sounds like a question you need to be asking your boss. That is the only person that can define what you can and can't wear.

So what was her definition? To me, T-shirts are any kind of shirt that doesn't have a collar. It can be plain or printed. I have lots in different colors but are all plain. I wear them to school all the time.

I think of T-shirts as your typical crew neck tshirt. IMO, the cut makes it a Tee, not the fabric.

I would not suggest telling your boss that the new "No T-shirts" dress code has you mystified because you cannot recognize what is and isn't a T-shirt. Your boss might get the impression that you aren't as smart as you are.

Just wear shirts with collars. Polo shirts would be good. If you don't know what those are, check out the golfers on TV. That's what they wear.

I would define a t-shirt as a crew neck shirt with no collar, buttons, zippers, etc. I have several casual shirts with buttons up the top half or v-necks. They're made of jersey material like t-shirts and are comfortable but look nicer. I wear these to work all the time (I work at a preschool too!).

You boss probably wants to prohibit shirts with writing or pictures or even plain ones that look sloppy or unprofessional. I don't think asking your boss for a clearer definition would be a problem. It would show that you're thinking about and interested in following the new rules.

Its very simple actually. On your next work day, wear a very safe shirt. Bring in the ones you are confused about & have her decide. Or if you wear them so much that she's familiar with them, ask.

Like everyone said, its not what we think, its what your boss thinks. Sometimes the DIS can't answer everything.

Yes, good advice in this thread: If the rule is to be enforced by your boss, what matters is what your boss believes is a tee-shirt.

I was just currios what everyone else thought since i abide by her other policy. It irrates me to no end cuase I need to go shopping (im pretty sure some of my shirts will irrate her). She also wants our shoes clean and polished. Its a good think I wear black shoes or i would be washing daily.

Here's another vote for go ask your boss. When my principal started dress down days for us, he didn't give any specifics, figuring that people would know what that meant. Dress down means different things to different people. We then got a very specific list of things. We can wear t-shirts, but not with writing on them.

I think a Tee is defined as any crew or V-neck knit shirt that is casual.

Again, I DID ASK THE BOSS! i was currious to get others opinions to see what others thought before I got her response

Not to be rude, but maybe you should have put that in your original post. In your original post, you said ''Im frustrated because now im not sure what to wear anymore since tees are out and I refuse to get all dressy to teach preschoolers.''

The impression I get when reading that was that you were not sure what to wear anymore, so my first thought was to tell you to ask your boss. So when people on here are telling you to go ask your boss, they are just giving you advice on what to do since you said you were not sure. They are not being rude by telling you that, they're just trying to help you out. :goodvibes

I think you are misunderstanding the replies you're getting. Saying that you should ask what your boss considers tee shirts (really: that you should defer to what the boss says tee shirts are) is a very cogent and specific response to your inquiry. More specifically (at least for myself), it is declaring that there is no value in my own definition of what a tee shirt is, in this context; we're (or at least I'm) saying that a tee shirt, (again) in this context, is (specifically) whatever the boss says it is. I hope that makes the replies you're getting a bit clearer.
:hippie:

You do realize there is a huge choice of clothing that would fall in between the two extremes of "T-shirt" and "all dressy." Buy some inexpensive polos at Walmart or Target and you'll be appropriate, comfortable and definitely NOT "all dressy."

Doesn't sound like your boss is asking for a lot - neat and clean - shirts just a "tad" more dressy than a tee shirt - and polished shoes.. They are running a business and whether it's teaching preschoolers or whatever, clients take notice of how the employees are dressed..

If that's too much to ask, maybe you could start looking for a new job where you can wear whatever you choose to wear.. :confused3

I think it's a bit much for a preschool teacher to be dressy. Well unless it's a stuck up snobby place where people dress thier kids in sunday best.

But little ones are messy and create bigger messes. Dressy clothes are more expensive than t-shirts. And well shoes really shouldn't be an issue, you need something comfortable and to be able to keep up with the kids. Dress flats don't seem to live up to that standard.

I'd suggest going and buying polo shirts, almost like t-shirts, but with a colar and usually a few buttons at the neck.

Why the sudden rule change? I think if some were starting to slack in thier looks, that the boss would talk to them to let them know they shouldn't wear that particular outfit. Not come down on the whole crew.

And to me a t-shirt is what 90% of people wear to disney.

If asking is a problem then wear a collared shirt on your next work day and the see what the others are wearing and see if they are told it is not appropriate.
