Define Pixie Dust

Mock DCL? ... I seriously think the question came from a good place. Perception/interpretation is always interesting. Personally, what I find interesting is that there are so many different interpretations of what "Magic" and "pixie dust" are and I truly enjoy this thread.

Some people like to compare the product to other cruise lines. I think there is room for more than "If you are not happy go somewhere else". I've had bad experiences in Disney hotels and Disney restaurants. That doesn't mean I don't like Disney at all.

Sometimes I feel like people here are not allowed to give a negative review (like it's going to burst the Disney bubble and destroy the magic).

I also placed my reasons.........just my opinion.....AKK

Jimmy I would ask not to use the term *KOOL AID*......I find the term insulting as does most Disney fans.

I was using the phrase used by ImTempest on page one. If you made the same admonition to that post, I missed it.

Let's be fair. "Bad" was not my word choice.
Look. There is no point debating (especially here), whether the Disney Dream is a better built ship than Anthem of the Seas. I would hope that we could all agree that they are both wonderfully built ships and got the full attention of Meyer Werft.

I know little about that vessel, so the only thing I can say, is RCCL is a good line. I have sailed in their ships.

Comparing happens a lot which is something I try to avoid. I feel like it narrows my perspective when, really, there's room for all the good from all options. Compare. Like would you compare your children one to the other? Heck no! They're both amazing!

That's where I'm at. I'm not going on NCL this month looking for anything Disney. I'd be doomed for disappointment from the start. I'm looking for something entirely different. I don' want them to be alike. When I'm ready for that Disney experience, I know where it is. I don't value different experiences any more or less. Like my kids, one is NOT better than the other. They're different. I thank God for that because 2 of either one of them would make me insane. LOL!

Regardless what emotion each person attaches to the word(s), there's no denying Disney has latched onto the phrase as part of their "magical" list of trigger words that they use over and over. "Have a magical day!" Seriously take note of the repetitive words they use. Wishes. Dreams. Magic. Memories. Celebrate. Pixie dust. It's like your servers repeating the word "excellent" to you every chance they get. It isn't accidental. They want you to key into that word when you see it on the comment card. It's a power of suggestion. Really pay attention. You'll hear crew say excellent rather frequently. We've actually taken to saying it back to them every chance we get, too, just to let them know we get what they're doing. LOL!

Now, step back and think about cult behavior. Look, I know using the word "cult" is extreme but let's be objective here. Think about how they operate, the techniques commonly used to get into people's heads. Key words and phrases repeated constantly is a psychological tool. It is. The ultimate goal is money, power, and keeping the masses engaged with their agenda. Keeping the people's attention captive and loyal. I know it's kinda humorous in a way but when you step back and look, it's pretty WOW actually.

Even fully understanding all this I still do Disney stuff. I just make an effort now to keep it in balance and with a healthy perspective.

I totally agree. I said in another thread that Disney has created a weird Stockholm like syndrome due to very strong marketing.

I too find that what many people call magic or pixie dust-remembering names, upgrades, etc. can be found elsewhere.

For those who talk of the nostalgia, to me, that's people being emotionally invested in the brand and those people are willing to pay for that brand.

To paraphrase former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of things I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description of Pixie Dust, and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it.

As someone who studied cults in my first job, I can honestly say that Disney is not a cult. A cult takes over a life by dictating who you can see, where you live, what kind of job you can have, what thoughts you have and belief. When I have gone to Disney world, or cruised on DCL my mind is my own and I alone choose what I find enjoyable. Do I find the characters enjoyable? Yes. Did I like the fact that the Captain sat next to me and asked how do you enjoy the trip so far and when I asked a question he answered beyond what I asked? Yes. When I got hurt my room steward said that he told his supervisor and I felt like they were watching out for me. I took one cruise on another line, Royal Carribean. When my cousin got hurt it felt like they didn't care, and couldn't watch out for her and that it wasn't worth their time. Key words are in commercials, and catchy phrases to describe a product, that includes our process of electing people into our governments. My father was a successful businessman who did commercials and had key phrases that people responded to. Disney is a business that does bring enjoyment to a lot of people and me.

What I meant might be lost in translation (sorry... french canadian here!) but to me "comparing" would mean naming the pros and cons of each cruise line as well as mentioning what makes them stand out. There are excellent articles doing that as well. Since DCL and other cruise lines are not my children (I don't have any but I do have three cats that I really like LOL), I feel free to "compare". And critic. :thumbsup2

i know for myself the words 'pixie dust' are not only used in conjunction with dcl or disney in general so i'm not sure all people who use it are actually meaning that dcl is better. a few years ago i received a great upgraded cabin and i was very happy. i consider that pixie dust and called it so, however if it would have been on another cruise line i would have considered it pixie dust as well.
its an expression that i use in every day situations so maybe people are just using the term when they could as easily said 'a great gift' or 'a nice surprise'.
just a thought…...

My pixiedust: moments on DCLs:
For our 25th anniversary someone put up decorations on our door announcing our celebration to everyone else onboard. We do not have any idea who did this. We came back from breakfast the second day of a seven day cruise and there they were. What a surprise and a welcome pixiedust: moment.
Went on a family cruise one year with DD, DSiL, DGS (Teen), DW and me had Typhoon from Turkey as our server. 16 months later DW and I made a last minute reservation, went to PC for embarkation lunch, Typhoon saw us walking up to PC, and he came out of line from where the servers were escorting the cruisers to their tables. He served us lunch. We went to the table assignment change meeting, requested Typhoon as our server and it was granted. Typhoon had gone home twice and gotten married during those 16 months, yet he still recognized us.
We went to a brunch, ordered hot items from the menu, went through the hot/cold buffet twice, and dessert buffet twice. Our waiter informed us that we had not eaten enough, so he went to the dessert table, loaded a plate with desserts, and asked us to take it back to the room. We took that plate of desserts to the movie theater that night.
On one cruise we were upgraded from an inside to OV room, no charge. This cruise was booked on DVC points. We did not find out about the upgrade until we got in the room. When our luggage arrived they still had the tags from our previous inside room on them.

Well, to be fair, this simply means that you are not a member of the cult. But "taking over one's life"; "where one lives"; "what kind of job one has"; and "what thoughts you have" definitely describes a lot of hard corp Disney fans. So if that is the definition of "cult" that you choose to use, while you might not fit the description, many other people do. The point being that not everyone who loves Disney is a "member of a cult". But some people who love Disney definitely follow irrational, cult-like behavior. It might be a very small percentage. But the concept of "an irrational love for Disney that is all-consuming in one's life" is a concept that definitely exists in the real world.
