Deck 2 Oceanview Rooms on the Magic

For me, the lower and more interior I am, the worse I feel. I need the fresh air and natural light and access to the outdoors. Vibrations and feeling enclosed bother me more than sway. I think part of my issues - if I have them at all is more claustrophobia than actual sea sickness. I basically would rather not cruise than cruise without a verandah. I wish that weren't the case!

And there is nothing wrong with that. Everybody is different and enjoys, needs and/or wants different things on a cruise.

Out of all our DCL cruises we have done Deck 2 on the Magic and Wonder over a dozen times. We love the location. My favorite is 2546 area but have been forward, aft and smack in the middle. Deck 2 is so convenient to many things on the ships and only an elevator ride away from the top decks. You will really love Deck 2 when you come back from an excursion and don't have to climb a ton of stairs or wait long for an elevator to get to your deck. Or, if you forget something from your cabin or want to drop something off or change it is only a flight or two down from the dining rooms and atrium and clubs. Very easy to come and go from you cabin.

Many will say only higher decks are desirable but that is all personal preference. Cruise lines do charge more for higher decks but that is because of the perception from the old cruising days where lower decks were considered "steerage". You get the same service and amenities as higher decks and you would never even know what deck you were on as the décor is the same. We love deck 2 and find it is a perfect combination of location, price, convenience and value.

We stayed in an OV on deck 2 in 2014. We are staying on deck 2 in an OV again this year! We did feel slight thruster vibrations, but actually, the vibrations were much much worse on Dream this past December docking at CC. And we were on deck 7 with a verandah!
I do not have any concerns about staying again on deck 2. For us it was a choice - either we choose the cheapest OV room ( I don't like inside rooms) or we didn't go!
We are in room 2114 this year, which I think is a 9c - I will be happy to report back OP (our cruise is 27th Aug) :goodvibes

Claire :)

We love Deck 2. We've stayed in a verandah on Deck 6 before, and OV on Deck 5. For us, we don't use the verandah enough to pay the prices for it. We love Deck 2 because it's so easy to get to all the restaurants, theatres, kids clubs, etc. No need to wait for a lift, just walk it. We prefer aft, as DH complains about the distance to Cabanas when we're forward - since we usually send him to get first breakfast in the morning :).

When we were on Deck 2 aft on the starboard side DH noticed that at some stage every night (when I was asleep usually, so can't tell you the time) they moved a fridge or something across the room. DH tends to be a lighter sleeper than I am, so he said it woke him up most nights, but then he just went straight back to sleep. We didn't notice any other amazingly loud noises, or even really any slightly loud ones. My kids were both happy to sleep through any of the noises they might have heard. So he thinks being under the kitchen is worse than being under the dining rooms themselves. Once the dining rooms are packed up for the night they're not used again until the next day. The only thing that I could think is that Lumiere's is usually used for breakfast, so if you're a late sleeper that might disturb you. Our kids are always up before anything is open, so that's not an issue for us :).

deck 2 is less heave and sway than higher decks, if your sea sickness is caused by this movement than you are good on deck 2. you are also dealing with perceived movement versus actual which causes vertigo type reaction and your queasiness. fresh air helps some people but you can't count on that. looking across the horizon instead of the waves can also help. you move less nearer the ships center of gravity and where you have daylight. bonine before leaving port the first day is a good precaution.

We have also stayed on deck 2, twice now, including the 11 night Norway/Iceland/Scotland sailing and had no issues. I had commented in another thread when we were crossing in the North Sea, the waves did splash up against our window (don't let that freak you out) and the motion in our cabin was far less than when we went up to even deck 4. The only motion that was more pronounced in our cabin because we were forward was the pitching feeling of going up and down in the water, but again, nothing major. I have stayed every deck but deck 1, and every location and deck 2 was just fine and it definitely has a fan club :) I say pick a cabin/location you are comfortable paying for and don't worry :) Sometimes the difference between an oceanview and a verandah is several thousands for a family of three and sometimes it's simply not worth it especially when deck 2 is lovely for the view.

Good information! :thanks:

Are the vibrations that much more significant on the deck 2? It's just below the promenade right, so it's technically at the bottom of the boat?

Not really the "bottom of the boat". There's one more passenger deck (deck 1). That's where the medical center is. And then there's at least 2 decks of crew areas (rooms, time off locations, crew mess).

Then you start getting to the bottom of the ship, where the engines and all are.

So, then the big question is what's above me, on deck 3? It looks like we are below the tail end of the pub.

Count us as people who really like deck 2. We have been in fore, middle aft and have liked all 3

Another advantage is getting an elevator going up. It's pretty easy. My dw won't take the stairs to the higher floors but I think the stairs are a part of the disney experience! Nothing like climbing from floor 2 to floor 9 for a coke and feeling a serious burn in my legs.

Ahhhh, deck 2. My utmost favorite. Someone earlier posted they can afford a veranda but don't because they prefer deck 2. That's 100% us. We used to think it was an awful deck until DCL offered us a deal on deck 2 and we experienced it first hand. We've never gone back to a veranda since.

Just curious... why? What did you like better about deck 2? You had a big porthole right?

Location, location, location! It's quiet. We like forward. Easy access to so much. Our porthole (I say "our" because we ask for the same room every time) isn't one of the big ones since it is far forward. Still love it.

The Portholes are not all the same size? I thought they are unless it's deck 1 and you get 2 small ones. We ended up booking on deck 7 forward, but may change to deck 2 as our friends will be there.

On deck 2 (on the classic ships) the portholes are fairly large. The most forward and most aft rooms have slightly smaller ones, but they are still pretty big. This picture shows the deck 3 (really large) portholes and deck 2. You can see a bit of a difference between the two windows on the left and the two windows on the right.

Thanks for this! :thumbsup2

Not going to lie. I love deck 2 as well. It's my favorite deck. I'm a bit sad we're going to be on 5 for our upcoming cruise but we went inside because of the cost.

We always stay Deck 2, and not for financial purposes. I would never stay in a Verandah with my kids (my son has autism..scares me). We LOVE the HUGE porthole windows you can sit in! We love being able to rely on the stairs a lot for the shows, etc., and on the same level as a restaurant. We stay mid ship and there is very little motion. The higher you are up, the more motion you feel (think a tall building in the wind swaying...bottom doesn't sway).

I've found it works really well for us! With that said, we've never done it on the Magic, only the Dream.

Deck 2 is ok on the Magic and Wonder. We love deck 5 because there are fewer staterooms and less foot traffic. It comes down to preference.
