Just wanted to share a short trip report of our recent Christmas time visit. We booked this trip last May, as it was the first trip with the WHOLE family and thus needed to be panned well in advance. There were 13 of us! Participants included my dh and dd(almost 11): My sister, bil, and niece(almost 8): My brother, sil, niece(2) and nephew(4); My mom and dad (nana and papa); and bil's mom.

Because this was such a special trip for us, we went all out and booked the Grand CA hotel. In the couple of months before our arrival, I called the hotel a total of 5 times...to check on rooms, order a scooter for my mom, clear up some misunderstandings...Even talked to them the night before we left as they had assigned us 2 bunk bed rooms, when we only needed one. I was assured that the problem had been fixed and the next morning we headed out bright and early for the airport.

After our on-time flight and ride from LAX on the Disney Express, we arrived at the beautiful Grand CA lobby only to find....You guessed it...we were booked in two bunk bed rooms. The bunk beds are not big enough to fit adults so this was not going to work for us...and after all the work I had done to try and prevent this, I was a bit frustrated.

So...after much discussion with the manager, we finally settled on one upgrade (two roooms on 5th floor) and the other two rooms about as far away as one could get (with a not so lovely roof line view) Not too happy, but it was the only solution they could come up with at the time. We left the front desk with promises of trying to fix the problem tomorrow and vouchers for a free character breakfast, which was nice. That took at least an hour, and we were hungry, so we all went over to Whitewater Snacks for lunch before heading into Ca Adventure for the afternoon.

We enjoyed the low crowds and rode TOT, Monsters, Soarin', Screamin', visited with characters, and did a couple Bug's Land rides before heading back to check into our rooms. The room situation was pretty disappointing to say the least, as being so for away from each other was not the purpose of the trip. We tried to make the best of it and all met in the lobby to head over to La Brea Cafe for some dinner on the patio. We sat next to the heat lamps and it was a lovely evening and we enjoyed our sandwiches and salads and the excitement of the begininning of our long awaited trip.

After dinner, we went into Disneyland and were totally wowed with the Christmasy beauty! This is the third time I've been to Disneyland at Xmas, and this was by far the most spectacular...The lights on the castle were amazing! So we made our way to the front of the castle and squeezed into a spot on the sidewalk to enjoy the parade. We only had to wait about 10 minutes, which was nice. The parade was festive and fun, as always...especiallly fun for us because of the little kids enjoyment.

Everyone was tired after the parade so headed back to the rooms...except for dh, dd and I. We decided to do a ride on Space Mountain...10 minute wait...Nice. Also caught a bit of the light show and snowfall on Main St. In fact, my bro told me that nephew(4) was amazed at the snowfall and took off his hat to catch some, exclaiming, "Daddy, it's raining soap!"...too cute.

Back at our rooms, we caught up with my mom and dad who had arrived that evening, and lamented over the room situation. We were tired and were planning on early entry so went to bed. I didn't sleep very well with all the excitement and the phone woke me bright and early with the front desk letting us know that they were changing us to new rooms. Yay? I mean I knew we wanted to be closer to each other, but the prospect of packing, storing luggage, and moving into a new room, not to mention making it to EE all with a splitting headache, was a bit daunting....but I managed it.....Because I knew I would be glad later.

My dad was not so convinced, but he agreed to move as well, and mom and dad skipped EE so that they could get organized, which was a good thing because bell services wasn't going to take our luggage until mom insisted. (I was told that we could leave it in the room and they would move it for us, to make the move as easy as possible)

Once we located coffee (the only place we could find open was the Compass bookstore) and I took some ibuprofen, things began to look up. We ended up taking the second train of the monorail (so we could drink more of our coffee) into the parks for EE...just a bit late. We were planning on Nemo, but it was down so we rode Space instead...soooo fun! Did a baby switch and some of us rode twice. Then we headed to HMH, as nephew was super excited to ride the Nigtmere b4 Xmas version. He was scared in the stretch room, but rode the rest with his two big-girl cousins and enjoyed it immensely. Nobody in line either, I took some pics of the kids on the porch of the mansion.

Next we rode Pirates, then Splash. It was nephew's first time on Splash and he loved it! Couldn't believe it...He's only 4! He told everyone it was his favorite ride. While we rode Splash, my bro took the baby on Winnie the Pooh, and guess what they found?! Yes, it was the dream team handing out Mickey Ear hats! So we all rode Winnie the Pooh next and wore our dream hats for the rest of the day! Magic!:wizard:

At one point this morning, nephew was walking with his two cousins and told them, "Last night it rained soap...and it filled my heart with love!" How cute is that?

By this time, we were due to meet my parents at Goofy's Kitchen for niece's bday celebration. She turned two on friday. We took the monorail back to meet them and had our whole group picture done with Pluto when we arrived. Stay tuned for our Goofy's Kitchen experience...

Oh, I hope you had a good time at Goofy's. I LOVE Goofy's and have been eating there for 16 years, but some people don't take to it like I did/do! Anyway, it sounds like your trip didn't get off to a great start overall because of the hotel room snafu, the headache, etc. but we all have trips like that (my October trip was one of them!) every now and then, where something in DLR just seems to be a little off kilter and service is not as stellar as it usually is. So I hope the rest of the DLR trip was better. Did you ride TSMM in DCA?

After our picture, we were led to two large tables in the back of Goofy's. There really were very few people in the restaurant...We enjoyed the brunch foods as we were all quite hungry by this time...The lattes had long worn off.

The first part of our meal was pretty quiet...a few character visits (Baloo and Goofy) and a fun time watching Goofy drop the dishes and then a good loud banging session with the kids...We sang happy birthday to my niece and she blew out the candle on her cupcake...But then Prince Phillip arrived...

The prince talked to the girls and made them laugh and then asked my nephew if he was a prince. My nephew answered in typical form..."Yes, but I forgot my sword" With that Prince Phillip was off...And soon came back with about five straws linked together and a paper cup on the end...'Here is your sword, sir' and they went on to have a sword fight, save Cinderella (a five year old girl at the next table), ride on napkin 'magic carpets, etc...Everyone in the room watched and laughed and took pics while the prince played with the kids for about a half hour! It was priceless!

And if that wasn't enough, in walks the Mad Hatter who proceeded to have the funniest conversation with the kids for the next 10 minutes. I think we were in there for over 2 hours....It was soooo much fun. We couldn't have asked for a better time....And our group picture came out fabulous! I just wish it was a photopass option rather than having to shell out more $$, But shell out we did and I'm glad as it was the only time we got a shot of all 13 of us.

After that fabulous time, we split up for various purposes...My bro took the baby back to the room so they could both nap, My sister and I strolled back to the hotel browsing a bit as we did, the rest went back to Disneyland to play. When my sis and I checked at the desk, our rooms were ready! And imagine our happiness when we discovered that we got the rooms right across the hall! It took about an hour to get the keys, have the luggage delivered etc...and finally unpack. But sure enough, it was worth it in the end.

I had brought stockings for the kids full of goodies. I purchased them at the Disney outlet last summer...3 Minnies and one Pluto, along with Mickey ear reindeer hats that my mom personalized with the kids names, jewels and bells. I hung them on the coat rack in the room, which was perfect as there are four hooks. It was soooo cute. I felt so much happier now that we were all together. I called my sis and her MIL to come look at the cute stockings and then sis and I went into the park to meet up with everyone.

We headed to Santa and waited in line while the kids finished up a ride on Pirates. They joined us and we had pictures made with santa, then enjoyed decorationg cookies for the next half hour. Good fun for all. Nephew also relished visiting with Woody and Jessie and seeing the reindeer. After that we did HMH again and then took the train around the park back to Main St. to meet up with everyone back at the hotel. We discovered it was faster to walk through CA adventure and go in the hotel the back way...allowing the kids and my BIL to ride the Grizzly River rafts and then be able to change out of their wet clothes, as the room was so close!

When everyone got back and changed for dinner, we all gathered in our room to 'see the view'. The kids walked right past the stockings and then turned around when they heard the adults oohing and ahhing...They were excited and surprised and had fun pulling out the surprises. It was a lot of fun watching them, too.:santa:

We were all hungry so the kids put on their reindeer Mickey ears and off we went to DTD to eat. We decided to try the Mexican place (forgot the name?)
and they were able to seat us right away on the patio, which was great, as we wanted to make it into the park in time for the fireworks. It was a lovely evening, perfect for dinner on the patio and the kids could get up and dance to music in DTD when they got tired of sitting. We ordered some pitchers of margaritas and the food tasted good. It was a great time. Our waitress even brought us a bunch of bday desserts (9 of us have nov/dec/one jan. bdays)And we indulged in those before we headed to the park for the fireworks.

We found a spot about midway down Main St. to watch and waited about 10 min. for the show to start. We had a lovely time watching the fireworks together, steeping in the Christmas spirit. The kids were so cute. Little niece oohed and ahhhed...brought tears to my eyes. After the show, my bro and his family headed back to get the kids to bed, while the rest of us browsed in the shops. My dd and niece spent some of their bday $$ buying treasures...They always have the cutest stuff...and it's always new and different. When we got back to the hotel, we put the kids to bed and went over to my parents room for a glass of wine. It was fun to visit and unwind and talk about all the fun we had. All in all, a pretty darn good day! Stay tuned for the next installment...

Okay, now things are rolling after the less than fortunate start to the trip!!! SOunds like things steadily improved! I had a hunch that fewer people were in Goofy's this month because not many folks are making PS's for character meals this season, I was told by a Dining Cast Member. Usually, there is a 90 minute limit on the time at Goofy's, but since you guys were there longer than that, they must not have minded at all because they didn't have many customers! That Mad Hatter is a rascal - he can stir up some mischief, can't he? I hope he is there when we go.

Were your Santa pictures a free PhotoPass opportunity, or did you have to pay for them separately or something? I have never gotten a picture with Santa on PhotoPass, so not sure if they charge for that (like they do with the Pluto picture at Goofy's).

The Santa pictures at Disneyland and the Grand Ca lobby were both photopass this time....which I thought was great as we purchased the cd and split the cost between the four families, making it quite affordable...I can't wait until it arrives.

Okay...so now we woke up on our third day and actually made to the gates just as they were opening...walked straight to Nemo and waited about 15 minutes to board a sub...We enjoyed our ride, then rode Matterhorn and Dumbo. Next we headed to Casey Jr. and got in line for that...We had only been there a few minutes when a very excited dh came back from a fastpass run and motioned for us to get out of line right away...We followed directions and he led us through the side entrance to the castle and straight into...you guessed it again...the dream team! This time we got the fastpasses! How lucky is that? Two days in a row! We were sooo happy.

Next we headed into CA Adventure for opening so we could ride Toy Story...It was the longest wait so far even with arriving at opening, but the line did move pretty fast...we probably waited about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, my mom and dad were trying to find us and after several phone calls, we finally met up. I asked the cast member about them being able to ride, as my mom has an injured leg and really couldn't stand for the 30 minutes the line had swelled to...so she gave us a pass to come back in an hour and we could ride with my parents, which was very nice...

So we went to the Pacific Wharf area for an early lunch, which was perfect, as it wasn't crowded at all. We feasted on bread bowls and yummy desserts until it was time to ride Toy Story. My parents loved it...We all loved that ride. Very fun! Next a bunch of us rode Screamin' while my parents took the little ones on the carousel, which proved to be the most hair raising ride of the day...at least for my dad who was trying to wrangle a two year old on a moving horse as she tried to climb up the pole! Poor dad!

We had a great time on Screamin' and then went to check out the Blue Sky Cellars. That was very nice...It was fun to see the plans for the park, especially since mom and dad grew up in L.A. and have fond memories of the red cars. Can't wait for the makeover. It looks fabulous. And finally, we all used our fps for Soarin'...and watched my dad grab the armrests as we 'took off'...too funny! He really likes the ride tho...despite the 'scary' take-off...lol.

All of us were ready for a rest at this point so the kids, DH and BIL took the by now obligatory ride on the Grizzly River before heading back to the room, where we changed into our bathing suits and hit the pool. It was a perfect afternoon for swimming and we enjoyed the hot tub, the pool, lounging on the comfy chairs and having some snacks. We couldn't believe it was December! After our rest, we were on a mission to use some of our fastpasses at CA Adventure before our dinner reservations...so we that's what we did. Rode TOT, Soarin', and Screamin', before showing up for our 5:30 Story Teller's dinner.

This was to be a special dinner for 23 (I think...I lost count) as we were meeting with another family. Way back in the 70s, we had sponsored this family when they were forced out of their homes in Vietnam and they lived with us for about six months, I think...Since we moved to No CA quite awhile ago, we had lost touch with them...Until a couple of years ago when my mom located them. It's been really great for all of us to see each other after all these years. My bro and sis had not seen them yet, so we planned this get together where we enjoyed visiting and having a delightful dinner. The buffet was actually quite good and we had a great time together.

After dinner, all of us gathered in the lobby for a large group picture in front of the Christmas tree as well as various other pics. We enjoyed visiting a bit longer before it was time to go. My dd had been complaining off and on of a headache since our Ca Adventure rides, but after dinner and a Tylenol, she had really perked up, so we were ready to use up those dream fps in Disneyland and off we went.

Wow...the crowds had really picked up and we were soooo glad we had those fps. We rode Buzz first with about a 10 min wait with our fps. Then we did Space Mountain twice as we had enough fps...Not everyone was there...We had lost the oldest and youngest of the group. lol. After Space, we waited in an excruciatingly long 'fastpass' line to ride Autopia. While in line, dd was doing an awful lot of complaining so I asked her if she wanted to leave, but she chose to wait for Autopia first.

When we finally finished that ride, dd wanted to go back to the hotel...hmmm...not like her, but I thought she was tired as it was close to 10:30 so I bought her the lollipop she had been asking for all day to help ease the pain of walking back to the hotel. We also had our picture taken in fromt of the lit up castle....something I had always wanted to do.

When we got back to the hotel, she literally fell into bed and couldn't stop shivering as she got into her jammies. Now I was getting worried. I covered her with extra blankets and she finally settled into a fitful sleep. I checked on her about 10 min. later and she was burning up, so I took off the extra blankets and tried to sleep myself as I worried every moan she made. Dh came back shortly after and reported that he and my bro managed to successfully use almost all of those dream passes...It was a great evening for them. Nice DH slept with DD so I could put earplugs in and TRY to get some sleep...

DD slept through the night, which was a good thing, and I finally fell into a deep sleep for about three hours in the morning until I was wakened by a phone call from my mom at 8:30. So I got up and talked to my sis, got dressed, talked to dd...She definitely had a fever. Dh had some work to do, so he got out his computer, ordered room service breakfast and settled in for the morning.

I decide to head out for awhile for breakfast and good coffee at LaBrea Bakery with my sis, BIL and neice. After breakfast, we met my parents and the others in the park to ride Pirates together before my bro and SIL took the little ones back for a nap (they actually made it to early entry and had done a ton of rides) Next, we headed to Small World as I hadn't done it yet and I love the Christmas version. The line was huge...but moved fast...no more than 10 minutes...We had fun riding that together. My mom and dad took off on their own for awhile after our ride and sis, BIL, neice and I did the new castle walk through, which is just great.

We wanted to do some shopping in World of Disney, so we met SIL, and sis and shopped for Christmas presents. Found some goodies and used my Disney Visa rewards card for my purchases, which cut the $75 total down to just $3. Yay! (Would actually be saving money, if we had that card payed off...lol) I broke down and bought dd a stuffed Eeyore, after telling her absolutely NO more stuffies...but she was sick and I felt sorry for her, (I had been checking in on my cell phone all morning and she had eaten some cereal for breakfast, dh was having her drink juice and in between that she slept)

By the time I got back to the room, dd was awake and very happy to get an Eeyore to cuddle. She wanted to get up and walk around a bit and kept saying she was sweating, making my mom think that the fever had broken and sure enough, she felt cooler and wanted to take a shower. While she did that, I went back down to World of Disney with mom to help her in the scooter....We piled lots of goodies in her basket and we dropped off her purchases in the room, where dd was dressed and ready to go to dinner with everyone at Jazz Kitchen.

We all met at the restaurant, and were seated in about 10 minutes. We had a nice dinner and dd even ate most of hers and was feeling a lot better. Yay. After dinner, My mom and dad and sis's MIL headed back to the room via a shopping trip through DTD. DD wasn't feeling like doing rides, but she did want me to do a bit of browsing with her so we took the baby while everyone else took off to do some rides. We had fun. I got some 50% off ornaments in the Dept. 56 store and dd tried on some jeans and we looked through WOD again.

On the way back to the room, we stopped for Santa pics with little neice, as she was napping when we did the Disneyland pics. She liked Santa as long as dd was holding her. Back at the room, the others returned. My bro and SIL put their kids to bed, then headed out with dh for more Disneyland fun. I stayed in with dd and she watched movies in bed while the rest of us (except BIL, who stayed with the little sleeping ones) gathered in parents room to have a glass of wine and watch the fireworks from the balcony. Very cool that you can play the soundtrack on the t.v. as you watch. Then we called it a night as we hoped to make it to early entry on our last day. Sleep came easier, as I was relieved dd was feeling better. I even fell asleep before dh returned...stay tuned for one more day in the merriest place on earth...

6 a.m came way too early, but since it was our last day we all made it out of the room and into the parks by 7 a.m. for early entry. This time we headed straight for Peter Pan with a 10 minute wait. Next we did all the Fantasyland rides...I don't feel like I've really been to Disneyland until I do those rides...so I was very happy. We rode Small World too as dd hadn't done it yet and then did Space again, also two rides on the Matterhorn. And we did some pin trading, which we hadn't done much of this time...Partly because dd forgot the 30 or so pins she had at home...But I did buy her one set plus the AAA pins we got so she had some to trade. She found some really good tink pins that she didn't have so that was fun. Next we got in line for Thunder Mountain, but realized we probably didn't have enough time to wait the 15 min. as we had to check out of our rooms and get to Storytellers for our brunch reservation. So we sadly stepped out of line and hurried back to the room.

Got our stuff together fairly quick and stored our luggage, then met up with everybody at Storytellers. We waited about 15 minutes for our table and then feasted...Loved the plate of Mickey waffles on the table...yum! We were all super hungry too so the buffet was perfect.

After breakfast, we only had a couple of hours left until we needed to catch our shuttle so we decided to spend them in Ca Adventure to stay close and not fight crowds. We all did Muppets, which was fun ...Then the little ones went to Playhouse Disney while the rest of us did Turtle Talk. Love that show. So funny and always entertaining. DD also did some pin trading and got two more Tinks.

Next my sis and I then went to check on our pics in the shop while everyone else rode TOT one last time. I purchased a couple gifts and we did a few more photopass pics of my sis and I. I left the card with her so she could make sure all the special effects were properly inserted before we got home to see them online.

Then came the the least favorite part of the trip...the long trek home...not really that long, but it felt like it...We arrived at Sac airport about 10 min. late and FIL was there to pick us up with dds other cousin. We said goodbye to my bro and fam and headed home. We got to go out to eat together on the way home, which eased some of the 'pain'...lol.

It took me a good week to recover from this adventure. While I had a great time, there was also some stress with the room snafu at the beginning (which I felt was more than made up for with the lovely rooms we were given eventually, not to mention the free storytellers breakfast), and dd being sick.

I had really hoped to see the candlelight processional (the closest I came to that was standing next to John Stamos as his limo pulled up while we were waiting for the shuttle...lol) And dd and I wanted to see Pixie Hollow as she has read all the books and loves Tink. We were sad to have missed it, but there is only so much we could do, especially with such a big group and her being sick for a whole day.

But this trip was all about family and that was a smashing success. I loved experiencing the fireworks and snow together, having fun dinners, glasses of wine in the evenings, rides together and watching the kids go through their stockings...so many good memories.

By the way, the kids, my sister and my mom all got the flu the day after we got home! Merry Christmas! LOL.

Hope you enjoyed reading about our trip and that maybe it helped somebody with some info for their own trip. And I hope everyone enjoys a peaceful and happy holiday season and many good disney dreams! Thanx for reading.

Woo! Fast and furious trip report! Nice work.

"...into the parks by 7 a.m. for early entry. This time we headed straight for Peter Pan with a 10 minute wait."

Ooh, we were on PP at the same time....did you see a tallish 4 year old with a long purple sweatshirt (mine) and fingerless black Nightmare Before Christmas gloves on? If so, that was DS. ;)

Was your nephew tall enough for Grizzly? Like part of your family, that was DS's favorite ride (he'd eaten veggies and good foods to "grow big for Grizzly" since May and we were happy that it worked), so if your nephew was tall enough and wanted to go, I hope he enjoyed it too!

Sadly, Nephew wasn't yet tall enough to ride Grizzly...He did love TOT tho, much to our surprise!

I enjoyed this trip report. :goodvibes I think it's always good when people talk about the good and the bad, the reality of kids getting sick on a trip and how a stuffed Disney animal can make it all better. Thanks for sharing your experiences! Have a Happy New Year and may your family be blessed in it.:wizard:
