Debt Dumpers 2025

DW worked at a bank from 2011-2020 then left to go to work at an Urgent Care. She was driving about 30 minutes each way, and an UC opened about 2 minutes from the house. So she changed. But she didn't like it, so she went back to the bank. But her working at the UC was huge because that's when I was going through all my health issues (finding the brain tumor, diagnosed with mono and stage 2 kidney disease, long haul covid and the lung/heart issues it led to). WIthout her being at UC and suggesting blood work, none of that would've been found.

I agree as well. Also, not sure with the timeline as one time she worked at an urgent care,

Ah ok. I thought it was FPU. That's what was confusing me. I talked to our church, but they didn't want to do a course cause they had just done it not too long before we got there.

FP = Financial Peace (University). It's a 9-week course, usually offered by churches, and it is focused on helping people get out of debt and get their finances under control using Dave Ramsey's philosophy.

We were not at WDW. What does FP mean when it comes to Ramsey?
Oh, I was trying to count back where to where you said You were going in 2 weeks. Are you already back?

Financial Peace University. The course that goes with what everyone has been trying to teach you in the Ramsey thread. I can tell you it IS possible to be debt free. For people that struggle on your own, this course helps give you the direction to get there.

You will not self-combust by walking into a different church for a class. Have you ever attended a wedding in a different church?

I have been followingthe patterns with WDW in TX and the conclusion is people with problems love to talk about their problems and will never change.
Not everyone. There's a lot of good progress here and a some of us are done paying off debt and still hang around to cheer on others.
:cheer2::cool1:

I found this thread in 2013 with ridiculous credit card balances, :guilty: a car loan and a mortgage.
Before I found this thread I was paying extra to the cards but not really seeing any progress. Once I learned Dave Ramsey's Baby Steps, it really gave me a concrete plan to follow. By the time I paid off the cc's, our son started college and I agreed on his Parent Plus loan for $15k. It sucks that he only went one semester and changed his mind but I guess that's better than changing his mind after 5 or 6 semesters. Anyway, I paid that down, paid down dh's truck and then our other son attended welding school, another $9k there, and paid that down (0% BT with Discover).
By then covid hit. I was still on a roll with paying stuff off and we couldn't do anything fun or travel, so I started attacking the mortgage, and paid that off in 14 months. Literally every penny that wasn't food, fuel, utilities, insurance or taxes went to the mortgage.
Once you get the hang of it, it's very empowering. 💪
Now my snowball goes to savings. Any spending I do has savings to cover it or I don't buy it.
I'm worse than a reformed smoker. :rotfl2: (and I am that too!) :teeth:

Had my yearly medical exam yesterday and got the full range of poking and prodding (yay for turning 40). My results came back this morning and while some things have improved over the last year, my triglycerides are... really bad. Seeing as how my grandmother died of a stroke and my dad died of a massive heart attack at before 65, I need to make some lifestyle changes immediately. I've done well losing weight over the last year, but I still have more to go and need to get back into my meal prepping, macro counting, and working out.

In debt related news, I put my application in to go back to full time work at the Distribution Center I was at previously. It's not ideal, we'd never have days off together unless we schedule them, but until things come down in price or he gets a raise (not likely), it's gotta happen. Until I get back in there, I'm picking up a bunch of extra hours at my current job. Hopefully it's enough to get us by until I go full time again.

Rule #1: never have labs drawn within weeks after Halloween (or a cruise). Do it before. I found that out the hard way.
Hopefully yours are normal next time!

We didn't go on the cruise and I've barely had any Halloween candy. For as bad as it was, there's no way it was from the last week. 😅 I have family history of heart problems, so I knew it was likely to be an issue, especially since it's gone up since my last draw.

Dh and I are SO BAD with Halloween candy. Since covid, we started buying full size bars and Costco sells a pack of 30 for around $22 when it's on sale. Not bad. Last year, dh bought 2 packs and I opened both early in the day xand we got around 12 kids and all of that was leftovers!
This year, I knew better and held off opening the 2nd pack so we could return it. We still ate half a box because again we only got about 10-12 kids. Dh really didn't want to return the 2nd pack, kind of dragging his feet with it, as if we didn't get enough chocolate already!
I had to remind him his youngest brother has already had a heart attack and my grandfather collapsed and died at 66 from a heart attack. We don't need 30 bars of chocolate!

I'm not a huge sweet fan, except for chocolate covered cherries that come out around now. 😂 But DH is a little sweet treat every night kind of person, so there's always something in the house. However, I'm the type who will sit down and eat a bag of chips and jar queso in one sitting if it's in front of me. 😅

DW has to buy candy for her work. She buys the cheapest, biggest bag she can find at Target or Walmart, and she just keeps it in her desk to put out and refill as they need. We don't necessarily eat much in the way of candy, although I do like dark chocolate stuff and Payday bars. Probably my 2 favorites. But we don't eat ny more during Halloween than the rest of the year.

She has to buy candy for work? Doesn’t she work at a bank? Why do you both have such expensive jobs?

She does work at a bank. If she didn't buy it, then no one would. Just like the Thanksgiving pot luck this Friday. Nobody else signed up to bring the food, so she volunteered to do it all. She tries so hard to make her job festive and everyone happy, especially her customers.

If none of that is in her job description, and her employer doesn’t reimburse her for that, then she shouldn’t do it either. That’s money that could go towards debt.

Nobody else buys it because they know it isn’t reimbursed or mandatory or in any way related to their job performance. I doubt the bank would lose customers if the free candy ended.

She should not be paying for candy or food at work and you should not be paying for a work lunch. Neither of you are in a position to be spending money on work stuff. If the people your wife works with does not want to bring anything for a pot luck then it should be canceled. Obviously they are not interested. For candy for customers. It is a nice touch but that is extra money you are spending where you can be saving or paying down debt. The bank I go to does not have anything like that and expects it to be there.

How are you covering the entire cost of a potluck? It should be cancelled. Maybe suggest, “hey let’s all brown bag on Friday and have a holiday meal break together.”
