Debt Dumpers 2022

take the time to really review whatever their basis for this is b/c they can and do make mistakes. we spent the better part of a year going back and forth with the irs over our oldest's returns covering 2 or 3 years. irs kept insisting that money was owed and that the kid wasn't eligible to use the calculation that was used pertaining to income and school expenses. it took our cpa photocopying and highlighting sections from the irs's own page from their website that showed the calculation was exactly correctly applied before they acknowledged their error (several prior letters where the regulation was cited by us went ignored).

it may even pay to just have a cpa take a quick peek at it.
Sound advice. They tried to tax my 80 year old dad for IRA withdrawals from a tax-exempt account. He finally got it thru their thick skulls that that was the whole point of having a tax exempt fund. They earn a lot less than other taxable funds so that is the trade off but you don't want to get whacked at both ends.
I cant stand the IRS. Now we’ll have tens of thousands more of them.

Hi! Just a quick drop in to say that I'm still dumping. I don't have exciting updates since I'm just keeping up with my monthly payment on my car and personal loans (still paying extra on my personal loan). I have approximately a year and a half until those 2 loans are paid off. I do have a couple of credit cards with small balances that will be receiving the snowball method in the next couple of months after I pay for the airfare for our honeymoon coming up next April. The credit cards got used in the run up to the wedding last month. It was worth it. :bride:

Congratulations!! Your profile pic looks stunning. 😍

I'm mostly just embarrassed that I can't seem to get ahead of anything. Sigh. Starting up the second job next week that will give us a little extra money to throw at the credit card, but hello back to school expenses. Just got an email from one of the teacher's saying we need to buy them recorders. It's not much sure but these little requests add up!

My dog passed away last night. We had an appointment to get her euthanized at home today. So while the in-home vet bill was reduced, out a good chunk of money to get her cremated.

i'm so sorry for your loss.

i hated buying school supplies. some of the stuff was just ridiculous and there was no way my kid(s) would ever use the volume of individual items the teachers dictated. to illustrate this point-at the end of every year of school k-12 i would have my kids give me their backpacks and i would empty out all the supplies, tossing the garbage/keeping all the new or almost new supplies. those supplies went into individual plastic bins (pens, pencils, erasers, glue sticks, crayons, markers, spiral notebooks...). my 'kids' are now 27 and 25-those bins STILL have brand new items dating back to kindergarten   (would have reused them year to year but the schools insisted on 'new/unopened' supplies :sad2::sad2::sad2:).

Ha, that's a good idea! There's just SO MUCH stuff. Not just school supplies but like, they both need new sneakers since they wrecked theirs at camp (and honestly they are likely tight, why do they grow so fast??), the oldest is going to need winter clothes in her size here pretty soon, I was able to save the backpacks from last year and clean them up so they won't need new ones of those at least, but they need new water bottles because they chewed through the straws on their old ones and on and on and on it goes! And you know how fast those "quick trips to Target" add up.

i'm a huge fan of water bottles from the dollar (well now dollar and a quarter) store. ya know-if they are the nicer water bottles that would warrant keeping amazon, walmart and other places sell replacement straws in packs.

I remember this vividly. Ds25’s kindergarten teacher asked for 12 full size glue sticks. Sounds simple until you do the math.
There are 20 children in the class so that is 240 glue sticks coming in. But wait. He was in the PM kindergarten class. The AM class had same instructions. So really that is 480 glue sticks coming in the first week of school. Where tf is there even storage for almost 500 large glue sticks?
Crazy!

I'm so sorry! I took my cat to the vet a couple of weeks ago to see if it was time to put him down. He's about 22! But he got a reprieve and is still kicking. That's terrible that your pup's health declined so fast. So unexpected, I'm sure.

Congratulations on your marriage! :goodvibes :flower3::cloud9::grouphug:
Thank you!!! We actually all (except for my dad) contracted Covid either during or after the trip so it was a good thing not very many people were invited. I tested positive the morning of the wedding and we all had to wear masks during the ceremony. We were lucky we'd planned for it to be outside because if it had been indoors my wedding planner/officiant would have made us postpone.

Congratulations!! Your profile pic looks stunning. 😍
Thank you!!! We're still waiting for the real pictures. Apparently the photographer is on vacation in Europe. The only pics we have are from the wedding planner's husband taking pics with his iPhone.

My last few years as a teacher our school distract had to approve all items on lists. Need had to be proven and lots of items had to be added to a Wish List and not necessary. I was out of the classroom setting by that time but was so proud to see this happen.

They hired an insane amount of people at work so that when busy season hit, we'd be staffed and not working 15 hour shifts. That's all fine, but we've hit a massive slump the last few weeks and instead of doing the smart thing and letting people who WANT to go home early leave so the rest of us can get our hours, they keep everyone there and we are only working 6 of our 11 hour shift. So both DH and myself are barely getting our hours.

I don't even know where to begin, other than I put in a transfer request from my nice easy job to being a grunt again where I'll make $2/hr base pay more, plus close to another $300/check on production incentive. Do I want to do it? Not really. But I will to make up for the hours we aren't getting.

We also sat down and had a legit chat about going on a bare bones budget for the next couple months. It's going to suck because we've never done great with it. But I've been looking up free stuff to do with the kids and now that the weather isn't surface of the sun, we've been going on walks at night. It's just rough on my momma nerves.

Mailed the check for the additional $6k in taxes yesterday.
I confirmed with the bank that my original check had been cashed.
Called the Gummint and cleared everything up.
Funny story.
They cashed my check and put it into a joint marital account that they created while waiting for our filing(s). Then, they received DH’s filing and his check. Then they issued a refund check TO HIM for the amount I had sent in. Then, they received my filing (I guess).
Our anniversary is tomorrow. I’m expecting a $6k gift. 😉

I know there are many differing opinions on the student loan debt cancellation but I am super thankful for it. This will reduce my student loan debt from $48k to $38k.

I also forgot to mention that I received an unexpected 6% raise at the beginning of this month! It was basically a seniority raise to keep me in ratio with others in my position.
Director confirmed this will not replace my end of year raise or bonus.

I think it's great for those that get it. But also reserve my displeasure as I think that either my consolidating my direct service(whatever the gov subsidized loans of the late 90s early 00s was called) loans or the fact that they were whatever type that was is going to screw me out of it.

I had to continue making payments this whole time, would have anyway but still. They show as FFELP or something like that but I can't really figure out what it means.

But if I do get it I'd redirect the money that goes to my ira and add it to my payment and get what would be left paid off in 2 or 3 months. Otherwise the interest rate is below 3% and I don't want to pay more than the extra I'm able to pay now.

i have mixed feelings about it but i won't go into it b/c i don't want this thread to get closed. that said-i am SO glad that when my oldest graduated in 2018 we made paying off the perkins loan the highest priority (back then it had the highest interest rates) b/c that sucker will not qualify from what i've read. we are advising to not spend what has been set aside during the pause period b/c there will likely be legal squabbles about it but to continue socking away what would have been the monthly payments in hopes that it transitions from a 'student loan' to an 'emergency' savings account.
