Debt Dumpers - 2016

So I didn't find a bank yet. And we were in a car accident last week. So lots of checks going out there and the looming increased premium even though we were not at fault. Murphy right?

I think there is a special Murphy just for cars.

It's been a bit of a week already. Two months ago, a friend of ours who lives in China asked if he could stay with us for a couple of days before he starts a 6 week trip. We said of course, then never heard anything again. Monday morning, I wake up to a message that he is arriving Wednesday (today) at 7:30a and will be here until Sunday, but might be going further south to visit other friends. I could not pin him down on how long he is staying here, what flight number he had...nothing concrete except the arrival time.

This morning, we left at 7a to head to the airport to get him. I noticed that the car sounded funny as soon as it started, but DH disregards me on anything car-related as I don't drive. We're about to get on the freeway when the gas gauges go crazy, all the dash lights start flickering. We were able to JUST pull out of the way and off the road when the whole car died. Turned on the hazards, but they died. Fortunately we have AAA and they were there in less than 30 minutes and towed the car to our garage. DSIL was just leaving for work and was able to come get us so we could use her car.

Meanwhile, I am frantically messaging our friend to keep him updated. By the time we got DSIL's car, it was 2 hours after his flight landed. No contact. Now I am worried. We go home to check if there was anything wrong with the flights. Nope, landed okay and exactly on time. Still no word. I start messaging mutual friends. Finally DH gets a message: our traveler was directed to a bus that let him off in the next town over. We collected him and all is well.

Except for a dead battery and alternator. Whee!!! ::eye roll::

I just wanted to share I have paid off my first debt for 2016 - $932.01 off a interest free cc just days before it would have reverted to interest :jumping1:

Its just the first drop in my ocean of debt but it sure was a good feeling transferring that money :cool1:

That is awesome!! What a great way to start out 2016!! Doing the happy dance for you!!! Congrats!!

Yep. I would say in general that is true. But it looks like my post was the exception that proved the rule. :teeth:

Yep. I had pretty much talked myself out of getting any tickets. Pretty much. :duck:Since I would need to put them on a CC.

My only real disagreement with the suggestion of "buy what I can with what money I have saved by March 31" is that just about every penny of expected income is allotted to the dept reduction - no saving. Though, I guess, technically, I could use the other half my tax refund that was going to be used to pay down one of my DVC balances. It would give me a few tickets, and I would still be able to pay the balance down from the other incomes I'll get later in the year.

Oh my
you are making a good case for me to put one of these on my CC.(DVC here also)
I need to talk myself out of this.Lol
Hugs to you
Mel

Woohoo!! Congratulations!! Wish I could report the same, but my first cc of the year won't be paid off until March!

My realtor did a land title search on my dad's house and it turns out my evil step mother is not on title, only my dad was. She could still contest this/fight it, but as of right now, this works in my favour. I fear this estate will take ages to settle though so we are not counting our chickens and just going forward as if there was no money at all coming our way (because we might end up getting nothing).

Hi Hon
I have a VERY evil stepmother, she is currently on hubby #4. I am in Ontario.
When my dad died she got the villa in Texas ,the house in Welland Ont,and the entire estate (stocks, bonds cars, jewelry, monthly allowance--you name it everything). There is commercial property and a office building and she is not suppose to get any of it but one week before my dad passed a medical transfer vehicle took him out of the hospital and he changed his will.(he was on Morphine for Leukemia). This was all orchestrated by her and two kind neighbours who were (notary republics) My dad always told me not to worry that I would be taken care of. Now myself and two other siblings have to wait for this witch to die before we get our inheritance, We have had 7 lawyers view the case and it could end up in courts for years. Sometimes I just want to walk away and other times I get so angry I want to fight. I may never see a penny and this has drastically changed many things about how and when i will be able to retire. My siblings and I were recently able to get judgement that she could not include her children in any monies from the commercial property.YEAH! My dad actually hated her two kids but always was generous to them. I will someday probably leave my kids something but I make no promises to them. Lawyers tend to be the ones that make the most money in these cases. One thing that still hurts the most is I never got a keepsake from my dad. My dad and I are both Geminis and she said his gold chain and Gemini diamond charm must have got lost somehow. In my heart I know he would have wanted me to have that necklace.Sorry I guess I went on a mini vent-sorry.

I am happy to hear that your evil stepmother is not on Title and wish you all the best in this, but you are wise to not "count the chickens".

Hugs Mel

I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I don't understand your dad's comment about the fuel system... how would not filling your tank totally full cause your carburetor to freeze up? Plenty of people don't fill their tanks completely full when they go to the gas station, and other don't use that much fuel so their cars may sit with half full tanks for quite a while...

Ok...admittedly, I'm way behind on the thread. Hubby and I are car people. So was my dad. Our biggies:
1) in warm weather, fill the tank after dark when gas has condensed & you get more for your money!
2) you never know when you will get stuck in traffic or have an emergency. Always fill the tank when you're at a half tank (nice weather) & 3/4 tank in cooler weather.

Hubby also cites condensation in the line during winter (like dew on your windshield), but he's more specific about not having an empty tank and sucking up crud from the bottom of the tank and getting it in your fuel line. A former Co worker of mine did have issues and car repairs due to junk in their lines. Not the same as condensation, but just things to think about.

Love you all!

@bababear_50 oh my goodness, what an ordeal!! I'm sorry you've gone through that - continue to go through that. Horrible. Death is hard enough but when all the teeth come out and people just want money money money.....ugh.

I was thinking alternator! Glad that you got in touch with your friend!

Yes, simply a dead battery wouldn't cause it to stop while the engine is running. The alternator is what recharges the battery while the engine is running. When that dies, the engine stops then behaves like the battery is dead.
Either way, so frustrating!

Yep it's all about greed, we (siblings) and I just want to wish it all away and want to be able to have some closure. My mom and dad were married for 25 years before divorcing and she was all about FAMILY so through all of this we have honored our mom and stuck together and always will.

In an up note I just got news that we will NOT being going on strike at work and our union and school board have negotiated a deal. I will be getting retroactive pay (only 1% 2014-2015) and I am going to apply all of it to my CC debt. To be honest I am just happy to have a job and sooooooooooo happy we didn't go on strike. My oldest son has moved back in and fingers crossed as he and middle son are joking and talking to each other..........joy!

Cars and Fuel
It must be a "Dad Thing" about cars. My Dad used to tell me to never let the tank go below 1/2 a tank in the winter.

Congrats 4Mickeys on paying off your 1st debt,,it must feel great!
Well Done!

So I didn't find a bank yet. And we were in a car accident last week. So lots of checks going out there and the looming increased premium even though we were not at fault. Murphy right?

I went 20 years without an accident. We switched to a new company a couple years ago and a yearand half ago I was in 2 accidents in less than a month. Neither were my fault. I hadn't even settled the first one yet! My rate did NOT go up.

Incidentally, both of the other companies wanted to total my car since it's 20 years old using the damage to value ratio. I successfully argued to get paid and kept my car & original title! Not only had my car worked out to be free, I've been paid to drive her. She's a real good car, the motor lays on it's side so the motor is always lubricated and doesn't have the harsh cold starts.

Best wishes to you!

Either way, so frustrating!

Back in the old days when our alternator went out and it was night, we drove without our headlights. However, we have classic cars and this always happened with our friends so we could sandwich the "dark" car between friends and safely drive. I remember one night we drove 30 miles home from the drive-in by moonlight and friends.

And a few times we'd start the car on a borrowed battery, pull it out, return it to our friend, and drive to the store to get a new battery.

Ahhh, those were the days.

Paid an extra $50 towards my student loan this morning! That $50 was from Swagbucks, so free money headed toward that student loan. This will be in addition to the $100 regular payment, which is already $50 over the minimum. Hoping I can keep up $50 every month! That takes 4 YEARS off the life of my loan. Crazy...
