Debt Dumpers - 2016

Follow up on my other post - make a list of all the debts that are in collections with the amounts - focus on getting the smallest one paid off and then move along to the next one.

Haha I wish I could pay $1055 toward my loan!

And yes that is my plan. I just need to sit down and do it. We payed off one last year the AT&T I mentioned like that by a settlement. After saying to make sure they send you information... I may have the fiance check his credit karma and make sure it came off! I guess I'm a person of good faith that I just assumed it was done.

I did just do the math on my personal loan. If I snowball that 125 one my student loan is paid in October I can knock 10 months of the 24 month personal loan off! Score!

Never have good faith with them! Look on page 7 of this thread - Colleen27 posted some good info about it!

I am trying to figure out my Disney budget ( I am trying to pay it all in advance before going with extra money I am earning by working overtime). I am planning to keep to my disney budget by buying a gift card for each meal. I am going to get the gift cards from Sams for a little extra savings. I know it varies a lot by what you get and everything, but does anyone had an amount that they typically spend for Quick Service or Table Service?

This is a great idea. I am saving up airmiles and then transferring them into starbucks gift cards. I am not sure if I can only eat starbucks for a week but every little bit helps. I am going in March.
Have fun saving.
Hugs Mel

Thank you! Ill go back though. I did see where someone paid one off but then someone came back X years later saying it wasn't and they had to pay it again.

I always think the same thing!! I'm not usually bad about hitting up Starbucks, but every now and then I have one of those "you know what, I deserve it moments." I always try to tell myself "that's another $4 you could be spending at Disney."

I do mine a little different. I figured years ago that 60 minutes in an hour, times 24 hours in a day, times 7 days in a week is 10,080 total minutes. And at the time, my trips were averaging about $2000, so that means I get 5 minutes at Disney for every dollar I save.

It's now 6 weeks since DH was laid off. Our success has been in not accumulating new debt. Paying anything off right now isn't going to happen. Still looking for a part time job to help, but for now I've been doing a lot of eBay selling and creative budgeting.

Thanks Gena.
I paid off our lowest medical bill today. But realized we don't have an emergency fund now that we had to pay deductible and rental up front from accident. Grrrrr. One step forward, four back.

That's why they are called emergency funds! Glad you had it.

Keep swimming! Keep swimming! Keep looking for part time jobs, everything you are already doing. Curious, do you do Swagbucks? Sounds like some people on this board get an additional $50 per month. I could get loads of food at Aldi with $50!

Does anyone here use Quicken? We've been using it as a register for years without syncing it to our accounts, but DH upgraded it (which got rid of all my old transactions, grr) and hooked it up to the bank. Now I don't know how to use it. If I pay a bill and put it in manually, will it show up twice when it clears through the bank and we download new transactions? And I "set aside" money for all kinds of things; is there a way to make dummy transactions for that, that don't hook up to the bank? Thanks.

Ooooh, interesting! I LOVE this way of thinking!!

YAY!! You know, not incurring further debt in times of financial distress is an AMAZING accomplishment. Praying some form of employment comes up soon and in the meantime...great work!!

1) Does anyone here use Quicken?

We've been using it as a register for years without syncing it to our accounts, but DH upgraded it (which got rid of all my old transactions, grr) and hooked it up to the bank. Now I don't know how to use it.

2) If I pay a bill and put it in manually, will it show up twice when it clears through the bank and we download new transactions?

3) And I "set aside" money for all kinds of things; is there a way to make dummy transactions for that, that don't hook up to the bank? Thanks.

1) I use Quicken and love it. Overall, it is fantastic (IMHO) though there are occasionally times when it gives me fits.

2) Short answer - maybe. Long answer - If Quicken can identify the transactions as being the same, it will not double enter them. But sometimes it will create a second entry because it thinks they are different - usually because the amounts are different. I run into that helping my parents with their Quicken. The bill might have been $48.53 and will get entered as $45.88. In cases like that, Quicken will enter the downloaded transaction as a new and different transaction. There are other instances where it will also attempt to create a second transaction - for some reason, it has great difficulty recognizing the interest payments I get from the bank in my checking and savings accounts, and it really doesn't like doing a transfer between the accounts. But for most all business transactions, the only duplications I find are where the amounts are mis-entered.

3) Yes. It will just register as an uncleared transaction. I actually have about 6 dummy accounts that I use that with. Insurance, Christmas, Vacation, Memberships, Taxes & Registration, and Repairs. I "transfer" money into those accounts each month - enough to cover the estimated bill when it comes due. Then each month, I update the "transfer" to the current total, and delete the old transfers, so I don't wind up with bundles and bundles of unreconciled transactions. For example, I transfer $50 each month for Christmas. So this month, I will show that I transferred the $50. But in February, I will change the transfer to $100 and delete the one from January.

Hope this helps, and if you have other questions feel free to ask.

That is a huge success not accumulating any debt with your dh being out of work right now! I hope something comes along soon for you guys!

Anyone playing the powerball for the Saturday drawing? Just heard that the jackpot is up to 800 million now! Wouldn't it be nice to wipe out all the debt in one swoop and have money left over to vacation for the rest of your life? Ah, one can dream... :)

I've also seen a lot of people mention swagbucks. What exactly is that?

I have an account on my phone and used to use it, but I haven't in a few months. You set up an account and you can do surveys, watch some videos, etc and you earn money. I think they mail you a check. I did the question of the day and would also set my cell phone to preview videos. They have a secret code to look for, but I wasn't any good with that. Maybe someone can enlighten me. Just make sure you're on Wi-Fi and not using data.

LOL, I usually buy 3 or 4 tickets when it's around $100 million (as if $2 million wouldn't make a difference). My DH doesn't play though. HOWEVER, since I've been stuck in the house resting my back all week, on Wednesday I gave him $6 and told him to get me 3 tickets. It's the first time in his life he ever bought tickets.

And I'm going to venture to DD's indoor soccer game tonight. We'll stop at the near by gas station and I'll get a few. ;) I wouldn't mind splitting it with 10 others! My needs would still be met, after tax.

Good luck!

Yep. I normally play a set list of numbers. I got out of playing them for a while, but over Christmas decided to start back. It costs me 20 minutes a week at Disney, but I figure I'm prone to waste the $4 somewhere else anyway. ;-)

And yep. I have a spreadsheet that breaks down the estimated annual payout and all the categories of where/how I would use the funds based on the jackpot amount. I figured a long time ago that if I ever won, I wanted to have a plan so if I won I wouldn't let it all just slip through my fingers and not have anything to show for it.

I remember you talking about your spreadsheet! I feel like it would be pretty tough to spend $400 million (the after tax payout) in my lifetime, but I'd give it my best shot, ha!

This is a huge accomplishment that you guys haven't added to your debt! Especially so since it was around the holidays! Crossing my fingers that something turns up for him soon!

We will buy a few tickets. It's fun to dream about what we'd do with such a large amount of money.
