Oh please no. Please tell me you didn't say that. I said NOTHING RELATING TO THAT. I didn't say it's ghetto cause it's old.

You said they looked of "ghetto quality". Alot of small towns have old homes that look very similar to that house. Now, the house next to that one could be a beautiful newer home. All of them could be, therefore, don't judge the area by that one house. Also, the interior of that home could be completely remodeled and absolutely stunning.

He doesn't care about jobs. He's "self employed" (he sells pretty amateur graphics - not to be insulting, mine wouldn't be any better, but I'm not trying to make a life outta them) and I offered him this advice:

"Get a real job, build up money, start your business, eventually quit the real job once you have steady capital"

He won't listen.

I don't think a 2000 sq feet house for <100k is possible. Anywhere.

I see by your link that he's looking at Woodsfield. . . that's not too terribly far from me and yes, houses ARE that cheap in this area. And in good, decent neighborhoods.

You can buy a brand new, custom built, huge house with a few acres for between $100,000 and $200,000 here, so just think of what a 30+ year old home (but kept in good condition) would run.

He also likes West Virginia. No offense to anyone there but I've heard it's kinda a dump. Ohio not far behind in that regard. Again no offense to anyone who lives in either Ohio or West Virginia, but I've never heard anything good about either. Prices may be low but uhm, not the best states IMO.

Maybe because no one takes the time to look past the stereotypes to see that WV isn't rickety shacks and outhouses. How can you say "no offense but I've heard (done no research on my own to base this opinion) that your state is a dump"

Like I said, housing IS that cheap and this area that he's looking at is on the verge of a HUGE upturn. Homeland Security is moving their offices, a number of technological firms are moving here, a theme park is opening up. All in the next couple years. He's making a very smart move to think about moving while the cost of living is cheap and take advantage of all the companies moving in that may be able to use his services.

We're not in rednecks stuck in the middle of the woods. We're a short drive from Pittsburgh, and a couple hours from Columbus and Cleveland. This state has a lot more to offer than you think.

The house that the OP posted on page one looks like the ghetto. What's with the awful red shutters, the porch roof and the crumbling steps in the front? The other house posted on page two looks old and run down, but I suppose not really the ghetto because I could see with major rehab it could be nice. But, again, it had power lines in front of it and some yucky looking fence. I made no statement as to old houses and neither did the OP. If a house is crappy looking, it's crappy looking--that's my opinion. Age is irrelevant.

I agree that wasn't a great looking house, however, that still doesn't necessarliy make it a ghetto house... Just because a house is crappy looking and run down, doesn't mean its in the ghetto...We have older but nice houses in our neighborhood (and they are cheap) but mixed in there are a few that are run down, by no means does that make our neighborhood a ghetto...Theres a small suburb not far from here that has several new developments or $250K + homes, but the surrounding area is old rundown farm houses ....Guess what,,,,its still not the ghetto!! Rundown and crappy doesn't always mean ghetto

If a house is crappy looking, it's crappy looking--that's my opinion. Age is irrelevant.

But there's a difference between a house that isn't all that attractive and calling a whole area "the ghetto" . . . Calling an area the ghetto implies crime, filth, trash, etc. Honestly, in this region we have a rapidly aging population. Most of the houses around me aren't shiny and new with all the bells and whistles on the outside because frankly these older residents just don't care about impressing the neighbors by having the prettiest house on the block. They take care of the insides, the part that truly effects how they live. There are some very well taken care of homes that need very little done to the insides and just a few thousand dollars in paint and treatments to overhaul the outside when these folks move onto nursing homes, living with children, or unfortunately pass away.

That must be a regional thing, around here almost all houses have power lines in front of them. There are some with poles in the backyard but they are few and far between.

I learn something new every day on the DIS. I must have grown up in the ghetto since houses in my neighborhood looked like that, red shutters and all. In Ohio no less. And my parents still live there. I don't see any bars on the window or anything like that to make me believe it's a bad neighborhood.

Actually, the first floor condos where I live have bars on them. I guess I live in the ghetto too.

Actually, no I didn't grow up in a ghetto according to dictionary.com. My neighborhood now and then was/is very diverse.

Again, I'm only talking about the house. The house looks like it would fit in in the ghetto. I never said it was in the ghetto because how would I know? I didn't see a picture of the neighborhood, nor did I read any stats on it.
