Has a debate thread on the Dis every changed your mind about something? We see them all the time, and anyone that reads them usually notices the same 2 dozen posters or so, and they always seem to take the same sides. I was just curious if a thread has changed your mind or position on an issue, or at least maybe made you look at an issue in a differant light.

Not so much on the DIS, but I've been involved in forum debates where I've changed my mind or gained a new understanding on some issue.

All the time. People talk down about the "debtate" threads on the CB but I find them very valuable.

Yes! I used to leave my shopping cart anywhere in a store parking lot. After numerous threads on that subject here on the DIS, I have seen the error of my ways, and dutifully return the cart to the corrall every time.

True Story!

I can't recall changing a position, but there are a few posters that have a persuasive and respectful style that can get me to listen and consider what they have to say.

No, but if done respectfully, often I can really appreciate and respect their point.

Problem being, a lot of the "debates" around here get into namecalling and dredging up old cyber history....not a true debate by any means. Those that don't go off on those tangents are usually pretty informative.

Not on the DIS, although some have helped me understand the other side's reasoning.

I have changed my mind based on discussions on debate boards elsewhere.

Yes, debates always make me rethink my position. I add knowledge and on occasion decide that my point of view was narrow and I was not looking at a larger picture. I love to read them especially when they are respectful and about a subject that merits debate.

I've found that I've moved closer toward the 'center' on one issue that gets discussed a lot on the boards. So although I haven't had a complete about face on any issue, in the couple of years I've been on the DIS I have seen some movement.

Yes. I believe it has. And while it doesn't happen very often, it always makes me look deeper at why I think the way I do. I think that's a great thing!!

In a few cases, yes. I like to debate religious issues. As some here know, I have firm convictions about my faith. That will not change. However, instead of having a knee-jerk reaction to social issues of the day, I now can see other sides of each issue. How I feel about certain things has not changed, but how I react to others who believe differently has. I feel like I've grown as a person after years of debating with my DIS friends.

Personally, I don't care for fluff threads, drama threads, clique threads or game threads.

I do however love a good debate thread. I may not change my mind but I do broaden my knowledge and consider different view points. There are many people on the DIS with different life experiences than I have. They give a different perspective to issues.

On the DIS no. I agree that you see the same posters with the same extreme views over and over again. I would like to see a more moderate view.

I've changed my mind on a few occasions. Sometimes I haven't thought an issue thru, and sometimes the other side just makes more sense!

I have a tendency, though, to see both sides of most issues. Always blamed it on being a Libra!

I've changed my position on a couple of issues. On the issues where I haven't changed position, I'm more confident in my stance because I've truly listened to more than one opinion.
Yes, there are posters who can be counted on to always post one side and be pretty intolerant of differing views, but they are really the minority. Most of the folks on the debate threads are really sharing ideas.

Recently, no. I agree they've gotten a little "same old, same old". But a few years ago, on the dearly departed DB, I *did* actually have an about face on an issue due to a debate.

Nope, it seems the same people state the same thing with the same "facts" and info. or it goes so far off topic or turns into an argument.
