DEBATE:Don't DVC Members Deserve the New Elite Fastpasses?

MELSMICE, the problem with your room key idea is that it works with LOS (length of stay) passes, not with Annual Passes. The AP is a seperate ticket, so you would need an AP and a room key... Still, it's workable. I like that idea, it would encourage people to stay on property, and actually ease up on the fastpass usage.

Unless of course they restricted the FP to LOS tickets thus penalizing AP holders...Another discussion.....and then again, the people staying off property might cry foul.....;)

Just want to give my quick 2 cents worth. We went and stayed 2 days with the enemies (Universal) before going to WDW in November 2002. This was our 1st trip to Universal and probably our last. Love the magic at WDW. But what I have to say is that at Universal they do have the FOTL access if you stay at one of their 3 resorts. And I loved that idea. I kept telling my DH how it would be great if WDW would implement this idea. Also they have seperate lines for single riders. That was a + to me also. DH doesn't like the roller coasters and I had to ride alone and it made it much faster. DH didn't have to wait forever for me to ride the ride and I didn't have to wait forever to ride the ride. I would think there would be some way to implement the FOTL if you're staying on property some way. You know Disney has a way of doing magical things. I don't think I'd want to walk around with a bunch of FP slips to have to keep up with.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi you all, thanks for your thoughts about the dvc percentae, there are some good ideas and points, thanks.

To be honest, my real wag is 5%, it is just a nice round number.

One way that I had thought of, but that seemed problematic, was to to try and think about the percentage of people in the parks who are staying on property, and the percentage of people staying on property who are staying in dvc. Just running it through a thought experiment I get around 5% that way, too. There are a few problems with it though - one, I bet that occupancy rates year round are higher for dvc resorts than for cro resorts. Second, the dvc accomodations are different sizes, and don't really count the same as a "room" some sleep 8 or 12.

It's all just a guess but I feel pretty comfortable with the range of 3-7% - the "real" percentage probably falls within that range somewhere.

Ohana family - if your room key gave you an extra fast pass, that would be OK. It used to be that we could use our AP for one fast pass and our room key for another - it was a flaw in the system, but it could be turned in to a perk for staying on property or for having an AP if they tweaked it right. It would probably confuse some guests though.

MickeyCrazie - usf has three hotels, disney has what, 18 or so depending on how you count them. Or, something like 22K hotel rooms vs. 4K hotel rooms - even with two more parks, I don't think that it could work at wdw with that many more people.

Ya Know d-r, I never thought to try my room key that wasn't activated as a PHP because we have our AP's. I guess I don't have enough larceny in my soul;)....but, I will try it next trip!!!! or did you say that they fixed the hole?

Sadly, they fixed it REAL good!! Now only active passes work.

Yeah it was a hole that doesn't work anymore, but they could use that sort of "hole" by design to offer a perk if they wished - IE, you could get one with an AP and one with a room card, encourage you to have an AP and to stay on property.

One real problem with that "hole" was that ANY sort of magnetic strip would work - credit cards whatever. It would have to be trimmed down to active AP and active room keys.

So that's 1,676 DVC rooms, which is 7.6% of 22,000, and 6.7% of 25,000.
Beds really would be a better measurement. Doesn't the lodging industry generally keep info on beds?

Why are beds a better indicator? Well, in the room analysis a dedicated 2 br (that sleeps 8) would count the same as a regular room (that sleeps 4 or 5). Soooooo, the percentage of total beds occupied by DVC could be somewhat higher than the percentage of DVC rooms to total rooms.

And the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets are going to...................................ah, I'll save my trash talking for later just so's I don't have to listen to that #$%^& poem again ;).

I agree, it would be better, and no doubt the DVC percentage would be higher, since many DVC units are 1 and 2 bedroom units, while most regular guest rooms are studios.

The info might be available somewhere, but I haven't ran across it, and am not sure where to look.

Regardless, even at 5%, DVC is a significant group for WDW.

What? Did I hear poem?

The Autumn Wind is a pirate
Blustering in from sea
With a rollicking song he sweeps along
swaggering boisterously

His face is weather beaten
He wears a hooded sash
With his silver hat about his head
And a bristly black moustache

He growls as he storms the country
A villain big and bold
And the trees all shake and quiver and quake
As he robs them of their gold

The Autumn wind is a Raider
Pillaging just for fun
He'll knock you 'round and upside down
And laugh when he's conquered and won

The room key idea is good. All you do is turn off fastpass for actual tickets and turn it on for all room keys whether or not they have LOS on them. Anybody who is in the park had to have a ticket to get in.

The sheer numbers of onsite clients doesn't matter either. Once the fastpasses run out, they run out...just as they do now. The change in system would simply guarentee people who choose to stay on site a better shot at riding the rides.

Who does this punish (somebody has to be punished...)? Day guests...some of whom are AP holders. These people might go to Universal or Sea World...but they aren't going to be treated any better there.

Disney can opt to encourage day guests during the off seasons by turning on the fastpass feature for day tickets or AP passes when they need to supplement their income. During high season they can point to the fact that fastpass is restricted to hotel guests as a reason for staying on site. And! They can boost their room prices in high season as a result of more people wanting to stay on site (what do I care...I own DVC!).

i agree with the elite fastpass what an added bonus lets get it started:hope to see everyone for mardi gras
