My children had chronic ear infections as small children until about age 3. With my last son I did not want to get him tubes, You have to make sure they get no water in their ears once they have them because their ears will get infected and start bleeding. We swim all summer long and this was a chance I was not willing to take. You also have to be careful at bathtime. I chose to keep my son on a naptime dose and a bedtime dose of dimetap. You can use any antihistamine. Since it made him sleepy I only gave it to him when he would be sleeping anyways. If you give them antihistamine it helps to dry up the fluid that builds behind their ear drums that causes the infections and interferes with their hearing. My son only got one ear infection in 15 months after I started this treatment. My ped dident tell me about this, I read it in a parenting or health magazine. I did inform the peditrician what I was doing and they were OK with it.
