DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.

I went with Rec Tec - I've got issues with Traeger claiming you need to use their pellets or you void the warranty. Haven't tried it in temps that low (doesn't get that cold here in general), but it should work. It'll just go through pellets faster.

Friend of mine mentioned one (I forget the brand) that has a propane burner, which is tempting.

[ETA:] Looks like Traeger has backed off on their former "use our pellets or void the warranty" claims after the FTC started cracking down on that last year. So, good for them.
I kmow the owner of rectec grills. That and $20 would get me something to drink at insaneamountofbucks.

Yeah, just propane. I know most people say charcoal gives better flavour, but it's too much hassle and mess for me. The girls could care less what it's cooked on.
I've toyed with the idea of getting a proper smoker. It seems like as good a pastime to have as any. I'm just not sure where to start.

Well... Traeger and Big Green Egg seem to be the two biggest names...

I thought the iron cross that's supposed to be Roman was interesting. Doesn't mean the Templar Knights buried the Ark of the Covenant there, but still interesting.

The cross is interesting... but not sure if it has any intrinsic value.

But... here's my thing. They find a cross. They date it to the 17th century... that doesn't mean it was lost in the 17th century. It's interesting... but it's not conclusive.

I distinctly remember about 20 years ago in late April, I was in my shorts and t-shirt tending to the tulips in the garden one day and shovelling 80cm of snow the next (yes, that's eighty - not a typo)

Holy crap!
I thought we were bad with 48cm in April here.

Don't think we have Rec Tec up here. Doesn't mean I can't get it elsewhere, mind you.

Friend of mine mentioned one (I forget the brand) that has a propane sear burner, which is tempting.

That would be. I'd be a bit loathe to get a smoker if I didn't also have something else to sear. I want high heat for my burgers. Not just smoke.

[ETA:] Looks like Traeger has backed off on their former "use our pellets or void the warranty" claims after the FTC started cracking down on that last year. So, good for them.

And yet... I don't think I can buy anything else here, so I suppose it's a moot point.

Sorry mate. but i can tell you an alarm system that tells you when you're about to step on lego bricks at 1am in the dark is in active development. And has been for the last 30 years.

loads of my bbq chaps on FB smoke at those temps

::yes:: I figured you could. Propane gels at low temps, rendering your BBQ useless... but wood burns no matter the temp.

And Bones, Leather, Parchment Paper, and Pottery from 160 feet below the surface. Something was going on down there, back in the day...

Yeah. Something happened back then. Mind you something could've been both buried... and removed shortly after. I doubt we'll ever know.

I kmow the owner of rectec grills. That and $20 would get me something to drink at insaneamountofbucks.

Hmmm... not exactly sure if you're just saying that just because you know the owner, it doesn't get you anything... or if you mean something else?

Rec Tec is online only. Nothing like having the freight carrier show up with a pallet full of smoker...

Looks like the brand with the sear box is Camp Chef. Haven't tried them, can't comment, but the idea is tempting.

I get CookinPellets Perfect Mix shipped from Amazon, free shipping with Prime. Cost is (as I understand it) about the same per pound as the Traeger pellets, although you're buying a 40# bag instead of a 20#.

I've got a couple friends with Traeger smokers. They seem perfectly cromulent, and the Costco deals are apparently pretty amazing. I just had to be different.

BGE are horrendously overpriced. A kamado joe is basically the same kit at half the price. A BGE over here runs at about 1100 quid for the small one.

Morning boys from Lego towers. A bit misty over here today, so my view of St Pauls is slightly obscured. Hey ho, 1st world problems.

A good way is to use the chimney starter upside down and put a grate over the top. Nice and close for a real heat burst so seals really quickly, a great way to get a charry, juicy burger. Mmmmmmmm. Burgers.

I would embiggen Costco as well. ;)

Have a great Tuesday fellas

Morning folks.

Hmmm... might take a look, except... There's a Traeger dealer right down the road, so if I need parts/accessories/whatever...

I'll take a look at that too. I think Cabela's has them?

Hmmm... but that's in the US, I'm guessing? I'd have to see if it's available at Amazon.CA

Yeah... they're much more expensive... but! I've also heard horror stories of lesser brands breaking or the seals not lasting or...
I was interested... until I saw just how small a cooking surface you get for the price. Ouch.

Ummm... what???

They had them there on the weekend doing demonstrations... that's what got me thinking.

Actual footage of Norm as they ailed away...

I believe you spelled "aled away" wrong.

Hey guys. Missed a few pages there, and I'll go back and read them someday, I'm sure.

Had to leave work early yesterday--my son came down with fever at school. Turns out he's got the flu, so now that's in my house. We leave on vacation in a couple of weeks, so I'm really hoping this doesn't spread through the rest of the family.

I will say that things like this, the Bills, lake effect snows, and ice fishing taught me to endure suffering, so that we can suffer some more.

All that suffering just makes the eventual victory that much sweeter! It's coming, you guys are due. Any day now.

I find I don't use the gas grill so much after I got a pellet smoker - I may not get a sear on burgers, but the smoke makes up for it.

I just got a pellet smoker for Christmas after having a cheap electric smoker for a few years. I absolutely love it. It's a Camp Chef.

I've been really considering a Traeger. Except... I'm the only one who eats much meat so not sure if it's worth it. Decisions, decisions.

But there's nothing quite so good as proper BBQ...

I've toyed with the idea of getting a proper smoker. It seems like as good a pastime to have as any. I'm just not sure where to start.

I just got into it a few years ago and I've really had a lot of fun with it as I go through the learning curve. I found this to be an excellent resource: https://amazingribs.com/

They seems to know what they're talking about and I follow their recipes for the most part. They also have reviews of smokers, thermometers, etc. which I found helpful too. Having a good meat thermometer is key--my BBQ improved by leaps and bounds once I invested in one.

I had seen that about Traeger as well--found a lot of message boards calling BS on it.

I have the Camp Chef smoker, but I didn't invest in the sear box. I have a standard Weber charcoal grill that I use for burgers and dogs--from what I read, the pellet smoker didn't seem all that great for cooking burgers. So I figured the smoker would be for slow cooking and the grill could just be for actual grilling.

I found Pit Boss pellets at Walmart fairly cheap. The Walmart in my town has a 20-lb bag for $10. Their website had some deals where I could get 40 lb. for $20. They had apple wood, hickory, and a competition blend.

I never would have thought of using the chimney that way.

Bonus points for the use of the word "cromulent" there.:thumbsup2

You seem to have a noble spirit.

Morning Guys.

A nice, sunny morning here so far. A little cool but not freezing. First flood warning of the season today on one of the tributaries, ice jam is causing some flooding.

5 to 10 cm of snow forecast for tomorrow, DS is hoping for a snow day. DW did point out that last year there was one on the 28th of April so I guess they are still hoping. LOL.

Have a good one all.

Any of you download that Lego app yet? :)

Top O the Mornin Dads! Just working through month end results and associated reports with some Disney music in one ear bud. Even though we were at DaWorld only 3 weeks ago for some reason I can't wit for June visit. I think cause its just the 3 of us and a 9 night stay really looking forward to getting there. Have a good one gents (8 / 73).
Boat is moving. I'm drinking. See ya in 5 days.
Have a great trip Norm and hope they don't raise drink package pricing after you beat them on that one.

Hope DS recovers quickly and the thing does not spread.

Missed this post somehow.
Sorry to hear that, Mark. The flu is no joke. Good luck.

I know you've been a big fan of your smoker. Now I know what Make, I'll have to look a little closer.
