DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
'Morning all...
Time to end the hiatus and consider rejoining the rest of the world
(I know better that to ask if I was missed).

Seems to have been a bit slow around here.
I was expecting to have missed a lot more that it appears I have.

Top O the Morning Dads

Too bad Pirates, Cubs & Cards are in the same division the way all 3 teams are playing this year.

Nice Plans, like them a lot. I have talked about switching resorts during trips but have been met with family push back. Have you done this before or is this the first time? Be interested in some "selling points" for the family on moving hotels.
The split stays were DEFINITELY NOT part of the plan. LOL.

I am often solicited for advice on Disney World (sometimes I just force feed my opinion, too J ) and there is one piece that I universally present to people.

“Have a plan, but be flexible.”

Now, being candid, as much as I offer that sage piece of wisdom, I’m not always the most willing to change plans. In fact, I am more likely to stomp my feet and pout. Yes, I just indicted myself with my wife as potentially being part of the reading audience. Although this is nothing that she doesn’t already know and probably just had an epiphany in that our youngest inherited this trait from me.

Although the flexibility perspective has not historically been my forte, I do have a penchant for planning.

In fact, I begin planning our next trip within about 10 days of our return. I think it’s less about me being a control freak and more about the enjoyment that comes with prepping for a Disney World trip.

Much as you would expect, our resort was booked 11 months out (Bay Lake Tower) and modified (VWL) at the 7month window per our normal DVC process. Everything else fell into place….ADRs at 180 days, prepping for ourFP+ at 60 days…even booked MNSSHP the day tickets went on sale.

Then the bombshell went off….

Our school’s calendar was online and my wife saw a critical school event for our oldest. ….and it was while we were on our trip.

My daughter is flexible and reasonable enough to adjust to most situations, but this even is kind of like a rite of passage for kids in our elementary schools. The type of thing that is well known by all the lower grades and that you look forward to in 5th grade. It was the class camping trip. To outsiders, it doesn’t sound a like a big deal, but it is. And Renee and I were both beside ourselves with what to do. All of the planning just went right out the door! We talked in circles trying to figure out a variety of options and running various scenarios. Would work allow us to be able to change our vacation weeks? Could we find a resort? What about airfare? We even considered sending our daughter back early and having a family member pick her up at the airport. We finally decided, if we could change vacation per work, we’d go all in to move our plans. Anguish and anxiety abound. The next day Renee spent the ENTIRE morning on the phone with multiple cast members, conferencing me in at work and via a litany of texts. She and I each had details in our notebooks that looked like something out of the DaVinci code. After it was all said and done…we moved our trip back from Sat-Sat to Tue-Tue….saved around $100 dollars on airfare, transferred our MNSSHP tickets to another night and salvaged 98% of our ADRs. Because we moved our booking date up, it just so happened that our FP+ window opened that same night at midnight. Can you say exhausting day?

Now…the most intriguing thing about this is how you can embrace a situation that is outside of you control. I mentioned that we were booked for VWL. Well, we’re not split-stay sort of people…but when your trip is 60 days away and it’s during the Food & Wine Festival…beggars can’t be choosers!

<sarcasm font>Our plans now have us staying in 3 different rooms across 2 resorts! We will begin with a 2 BR Savannah View at Kidani Village (Oh, the humanity. I’m not sure I can handle having to sip my coffee on the balcony whilst looking at African wildlife.) Sadly we have to move from that dumpster to the Villas at Wilderness Lodge. Pickings were slim and the best that we could manage was a Club Level, Deluxe Room. At this point I’m not sure why we even bothered with joining the Disney Vacation Club! What am I supposed to do with all of that open access to snacks, desserts, various beverages, etc. And finally, moving on to a 2BR within VWL. </sarcasm font>

So…we’re definitely titling this trip “Sounds like an adventure.”

While I certainly never expected our trip planning to take this route, heeding my own advice was a cruel but worthwhile twist of fate.

An early good morning Gents, was up at 4:30 to take the Brit to the airport. Heading to see friends in Minnesota then back down here for a return trip to the Keys with some other friends.

Now that is impressive.

Other than the rain, it sounds like it'll be a very nice memorial service.
Enjoy the company, trade stories of your friend, celebrate life.

Hope all went as planned and you were able to celebrate your friend

It was a nice "Celebration of Life." Saw some old friends that I have not seen in a while and I think Joe would have enjoyed the gathering. There was a short memorial where people spoke about him then three boats went out where a wreath was placed in the water. The evening ended with a BBQ at a local watering hole. Much laughter and story telling. More that a couple of glasses were raised in his honor. A really nice guy and all around smart a$$. He was the Captain of the boat when the Pirate Princess first got certified nine years ago. The two developed a bond over the years and as another smart a$$, they enjoyed trying to outdo each other.

Morning gents.
Rainy and cool... but not cold. So that's a net plus, isn't it?

It looks like the washout that was the Keys trip is continuing. Lumber is being delivered later today so I can start on the ark. Cool is better than cold so yes, that is a net plus.

The split stays were DEFINITELY NOT part of the plan. LOL.

Slacker. I start planing my next trip before I reach the halfway point of the trip I am on. Nice pivot on the plan. Sorry you you have to slum it though. I mean if you have seen one Giraffe, you have seen them all.

Guess I'm gonna have to get a FB account.

Don't give in!!!! It's dirty and shameful on FB. I don't know why, but overall it just smells like the color brown.

I do both but more here than there. And you were missed.

What's your name again?

I don't do the facebooks. I just lurk here and pick up what I can.
{Bill Lumberg voice} Yeahhhhhh.......I'mmmm gonna need you to go ahead and come back here every day...That would be grreaaaat.

Slacker is an understatement! I'll be starting my next TR before I finished the LAST TR!

Stopping in to say hey. Do have a vent though. Rumor is, I know it's a rumor, Disney is retiring SW Weekends at studios. I understand that when there is a new SW Land there will no longer be a need for the weekends but that is a few years off. We have been to SW wknds before but DS wanted this father son trip as is Sr / HS grad trip. I am getting close to 7 month booking window so hopefully the event will get officially confirmed before that. Hoping they do like they are with Osborne Lights in announcing the last time for the event rather than a "never mind we just aren't doing that any more".
Don't give in!!!! It's dirty and shameful on FB. I don't know why, but overall it just smells like the color brown.
OK, but may need to have a FB account with DD not around to follow her events - at least that's what my kids keep telling me. Regardless, I would rater hang out in our group right here.

Almost caught up. Had the evening off from DS's Dulcimer Club and thought I would get a lot done with the extra 3 hours, but there was something odd going on with the bee hive in our front yard so had to suit up and check it out. May have been robbers, but I'm not sure so in true KY fashion I sealed up a few cracks with duct tape and hope that helps.

Morning...
A day off... but we agreed to drive the rugrat to school when she has band in the morning.
So I'm up and out of the house by 7:15am
Good thing it only happens on Mondays... and Tuesdays... oh, and Thursdays.
And Fridays.

Nice thing about homeschooling and having my office less than a 5 minute walk away, no alarm clocks. I could probably count on two hands the number of times in a year we set one.

I'd skip the Disney Quest. Just because you haven't been doesn't mean you need to go. There are a lot of things in life I have never done and never plan on doing and don't miss them.

Long work day, but I can use the extra cash for the WDW/ beach trip...

Good plan!

Sounds like a memorable event for a special person.

What a long and busy week. 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day, 145 miles round trip each day, 2 hours of tennis each night, after driving children to swim and soccer. I'm tired, and too old for this sh!!. But, looks like Payton Manning is too old as well - just with a lot more $.

See above. Plus, I went and played a friendly soccer game tonite - parents vs middle school girls team. Parents won 2-0. I managed one shot and hit it over the goal - too tired to lean forward into the ball.

Enjoy the nice rooms. I am not a fan of split stays, but that is the only way we may be able to stay at VGF or Poly. We are doing the beach split stay, which makes it a bit more acceptable. By the way, thanks for that taunting again. :lmao:

I heard it was just Minnie and Mickey that were leaving SWW. I didn't hear the whole thing was going away. But, they did take away ESPN the weekend. I wanted to check that one out. As for social media, see above. I also did a Instagram account to follow my daughter there. I haven't posted a picture there yet.

We went to DisneyQuest on our honeymoon as it was a part of the package. Nothing special. We didn't stay long.

As for the bees, be careful. You make a good point. That may be a sticky situation. Good thing you didn't just buzz into the front yard without your suit.

‘Morning all…
May there be much bacon, beer and Disney in your near future.

[RANT-MODE]
When folks make a promise, and then don’t make good on that promise it is basically the same as telling me a direct lie. They should not be surprised that I’ll never trust nor do business with them again.
[/RANT-MODE]

Ok I feel better now…
Carry on.

I'm sorry, but who are you again?
I have no idea.
I may have known at one time, but I can’t recall when that was either.

I don't know why, but overall it just smells like the color brown.
Rather a succinct description of the medium.

I have an account… read more that post… spend much of that time biting my lip…
It’s generally a much harsher, less thoughtful and honestly, a rather sophomoric realm.
Some of what gets posted up just leaves me utterly disappointed in humanity
And a lot of that is actually offered by folks that I know and really want to respect.

Sounds like a very fine celebration.
Glad you were there, and thanks for sharing the experience.
I obliviously didn’t know him, but when someone touches that many folk…
They have done much to better this world.

Were you gone?
In truth, not really…
Thanks for the concern though (or sarcasm – which ever it is, they’re both appropriate responses).

I get very blue fairly regular and just drop out of the world as completely as possible from time to time.
I wasn’t MIA all that long now that I think about it, so I probably should have just said howdy and carried on without bringing it up. Nothing anyone else needs to deal with. Think that’s probably the way I’ll approach around here from now on.

Saw that as well. If they stop it entirely it will be missed. Hope y’all do get to attend that last official even at least.

We try to keep an eye on the “Book of the Face” to watch out for our boy as well, but he spends almost no time on it any more. It’s been deemed by most of his peers as decidedly uncool because it has been discovered and appropriated by “old people”.

Stealing honey? Sad… but there is little that duct tape won’t fix.
Well, it won’t fix a busted dulcimer string, but must anything else and your good to go.

Never let ‘em win… Make ‘em earn it every time.
Sounds like a good evening was had. You’ll pay for it later, but that’s par for the course as well.

Top O the Morinin Dads! Friday is here so hopefully Norm can get some rest this weekend. Enjoy the football games and family time. To those that we have not heard from in a while, Jim, Chris, Carl, Brent, Paul, David, Dave, Phillip, etc. (even our fearless leader Randall has not been around here this week) hope all are doing well.

Morning sir. Thanks for the hopes on SWW and my DS too says bookface is less cool as well for the same reasons as he is more of a twit :rotfl2: Whenever ya feel a bit blue or down, just head back to your cruise TR or pull up some pics from you last one to turn the tide :boat:

Morning!
Should be aq good one... well, after I get done work.
Taking the missus, the kids and a couple of the kids' friends to see Cavalia Odysseo tonight.
It's a combintion horse show (think Lipizzaner) and Cirque du Soleil.
Been getting rave reviews.

[RANT-MODE]

This should be good.

When folks make a promise, and then don’t make good on that promise it is basically the same as telling me a direct lie. They should not be surprised that I’ll never trust nor do business with them again.

Agree 100%. At the very least, if you can't come through, have a good reason... and tell me!

Afternoon guys,

Happy Friday all. My plan is to hit Publix for weekend snacks and tonight plop myself on the couch for the FSU game. Florida has a must win one against Kentucky tomorrow night. Have a feeling you Kentucky boys out there might see the streak end. Looking forward to some good games tomorrow.

Everyone have a great weekend.

Afternoon me.
On the topic of social media...I'm pretty active on FB, just not a fan of it over what we have here on the DIS.
As a consumer of the FB service, I have evolved. Still a million friends like everyone else but am very selective with who\what I follow.
My usage is more related to groups now and fewer individuals. At some point it turned into commercial posts BY individuals and political commentary. I try to stay away from that.

I'm on twitter...I tweet my local radio show guys stuff and hat's it.

Instagram, yep on there, too. Don;t understand why. I can just post photos to FB.

Here's my weekend...
Friday (tonight): Help my buddy close his pool. Yup CJ, in other parts of the US people have to close their pools!
Saturday: Coaching my youngest's soccer game followed by copious amounts of yard work and hopefully making our annual tie dye Mickey shirts for our trip.
Sunday: Church and then heading to Heinz Field to cheer on my Steelers. Still deciding on my tailgate options. I'll end up with free food from SOMEONE!

Another whirlwind day. Work, noon Mass, laundry, grocery shopping, and cut the grass.

At work, one of my 7 bosses needed a project done yesterday as some people were unable to read the typed PDF I created. The solution was to post the exact same instructions on a PowerPoint, publish, and send. Thr finished product was remarkable, and only 30 minutes of copy/paste. :lmao:
I really can't make this stuff up. :sad1:

I get very blue fairly regular and just drop out of the world as completely as possible from time to time.

Don't feel blue. You have us. Never mind.

As for thr game, I think you may have heard this before, "Hello! You play to win the game". :lmao:

Definitely. I'm on the couch now and not planning on getting up all day tomorrow. I signed up for our local tennis tournament next weekend - I need the rest to be ready.

The only thing I ever heard about Lipizzaner was on the movie Crimson Tide.

I'm guessing UK's football winning ways will come to an end tomorrow. It's not basketball. You want to bet and spot me 40 points?

Sunday: Church and then heading to Heinz Field to cheer on my Steelers. Still deciding on my tailgate options. I'll end up with free food from SOMEONE!

Free food is always great. Free food and beer is even better. :drinking1
