Sunday morning ownage.

Congrats to the girls!
Ice cream for all!

Congrats to your daughters!

Norm, congrats to the girls.

Thanks guys. And Darcy, when I told them how proud I was of them for their playing, they asked for frozen yogurt.

First off thank you for your service.
If you get a call from Disney (or more likely an email) it is perfectly ok to ask what the starting pay range is. Generally a company that size has a very structured pay scale so they should be able to tell you what the entry pay is even though you may qualify for a little more based on experience.
Also Disney promotes from within alot, you can move up quickly. Either the guy who just retired or the guy who just got promoted to park president started as a bell hop at the Disneyland Hotel.
Besides having a Dad on the inside can only be good for us.
I hope it works out for you and your family.

Cliff has has great words of advice in there. Did the job posting have a salary range? Also consider is the benefits. While I am close to the national average in pay, I have terrific benefits (insurance, leave, retirement). So, while there are many days my job stinks, the benefits keep me there.

Congrats to all the dads with job successes or cool career options.

Congrats to all the kids on achievements this week.

Hope you all had a great valentjne's day.

Prayers to those in need. Especially to the South with those two extra inches of snow.

I passed my black belt test so thanks for all the encouragement over these two years.

Good morning guys! Our closet family friends (DW BF and DD BF) lost there step grandpa last night so a bit of a downer day around here. Have a good Sunday and good luck to the Canadian hockey team playing in a couple of hours from now.

So proud of my girls today. They won 18-16, with only five players on there. The other team had 8 players and a lot more height. Both scored 6 points each and really played well together - the best all this snow filled season. My youngest dd is over 2 years younger than my oldest, but she is almost the same height and has a chance to be a terrific player. She locked down the other team's best player, while my oldest rotated to help defend the rest of the their team.
Congrats to DDs as well as the proud dad
So, I sit at a crossroad in my life. The wife and I have some decisions to make about the future of our family. My current enlistment is over in September, and we are looking at our options. I could reenlist again and transfer to a new duty station, or I could get out of the military after 7 1/2 years of honorable service and enter the job market. Being a man that likes to explore all of his options, I submitted for reenlistment (no obligation until I sign on the dotted line) and I have also just completed an application for a job opening at Disney as a secretary. Not the most glamorous job, but it's pretty much what I have done for the past 7 years, and reading the qualifications on the job posting, I am highly qualified. I have no idea what the starting salary would be, is that something I should ask about if they call, or is that taboo? I would need to make sure that the compensation is at least close to what I make now so that we won't have issues during our transition. I'm really excited and I hope that this blossoms into a golden opportunity.
It is completely acceptable to ask for the salary range and as Norm referenced also inquire about the benefits package. Thank you for your service and all the best for you and your family in which ever path your take.

Well I know exactly how you feel.... I have considered getting out and working for disney as well. In the end I have looked at all the benefits of staying in and making it to retirement before I go work for Disney. My enlistment is up in August and my decision could be a moot point and I could be out next January. I am going to reenlist at the end of April. The way I look at it is staying in the military my family can afford for my wife not to work and still get to take some trips to the world. One of the biggest draws for me is the health care. My son needed glasses if we didn't have tricare we would have had to pay for the Dr. Appointment and the glasses. With tricare we only had to pay for the glasses. When it comes to a trip to the ER we don't even blink we just load up and go. Not to mention BAH, TSP, BAS, family sep, COLA, 30 days paid leave a year, and all the things offered on base.

I know that was a very pro military post but at the moment I know it's the best decision for my family.

Maybe we will bump into each other in the world in May.

Thanks. I have no idea what to expect as far as the starting salary goes. And if they give me a number, is it possible/acceptable to try to negotiate for more? Being in the military, I never had to worry about those types of things. Want to make more? There is a clearly defined process for promotion with a well mapped out path to get there. Want to do a different job? Submit a request through your chain of command. I like the idea of getting a civilian job, but I don't want to blow the opportunity or miss out on getting all that I can because I may be naïve about the hiring process.

The benefits are awesome, I was looking at the Disney careers website and they list medical, dental, eye, vacation days, paid holidays, sick days, and THEME PARK TICKETS. They didn't list anything about salary on the posting, but they did ask me to tell them an expected salary on the application. My thing is, I feel like I have enough experience (7 years with 5 of those in 'management') to justify asking for a certain amount, but I don't know if that is over what they intend to pay and they will just tell me to pound sand.

It is a huge decision to make. Tricare and BAH are basically the two big factors that would cause us to stay. But Disney does offer medical/dental/eye and we are factoring in my base pay plus the BAH in Orlando into my target salary. Basically, I am looking for something that starts out close to what I would be making if I was stationed at Disney World. We never started the TSP. That was one of those things that we foolishly said we would start at the next rank, then never did. Disney does offer a 401K though, which I realize is not quite as good as TSP, but it's better than nothing. COLA is great out here, but as soon as we PCS, it goes away. As far as FSA, I feel like the sacrifice of leaving the family is not worth FSA, and is a major deciding factor to get out, as well as a PCS every 3-4 years. The kids are all in the early years of school, we like the idea of having some stability in our location for them to be able to not have to say goodbye to their friends so often. This option might mean that the wife would need to work as well, but that is something she is ok with now that the kids are all school age. We should definitely work out a meet up in May, and that goes for anyone that will be there from the 10th-17th of May. I'd love to meet you all over a turkey leg or Dole Whip.

I passed my black belt test so thanks for all the encouragement over these two years.

Congrats. That's a huge accomplishment.

Way to go Team Canada, this calls for a beer.:drinking1

We have ended up with a "free" weekend as the plug was pulled the basketball provincials. Suppose to be rescheduled to next weekend and of course I have meetings all weekend. We also found out that DS's club team will be competing in the top tier for the age class provincials next month. That is going to be tough as they are the top team in tier 2 but have a heavy lifting to do to compete in tier 1.

Have a good one!

Good luck to the team!

Happy Saturday fellas! I haven't had a whole lot of time for the boards since I started my new job at the beginning of the year. I've been putting in about 15 extra hours per week. That raise I got wasn't enough to cover that much extra time if you consider it on a per hour basis (that will be a discussion during my first review). My new boss really likes the job I'm doing so far and has already indicated that I would be a natural for his position when/if he moves up. It has been a lot to take on but I am not bored anymore and am learning a lot. All the extra hard work is going to make those vacations that much more welcomed. Speaking of vacation, we have decided our next trip to WDW will be Oct 3 or 4 - 11th. Still working out details but happy to get something on the calendar. I am strongly considering do the Tower of Terror 10 miler on 10/4. WDW Marathon Weekend also has not been ruled out yet but that is still in negotiations.

Here is hoping that all that hard work pays off. Good luck!

Awesome! Congrats, and does this mean your hands are now registered as Lethal Weapons?

Just let them know what you are currently making and that you are looking for comparable pay. If you are receiving a housing allowance or on post housing include that in the number in what you ask for, you don't have to break it out and tell them it was separate, just a lump sum number because that is how it is budgeted. I wouldn't worry about the other benefits. Your insurance, 401K, etc. will be standard and not really negotiable.
As far as career path it is not that much different, you will have access to a listing of internal job postings. If you see something you like just let your supervisor know you would like to apply for it. If you get a good supervisor you can let them know what kind of career path or ultimate job you would like and they can help you choose the kind of jobs you want to move into.

Best of luck, I hope it works out for you and your family. Keep us updated on how it goes. Don't stress about it too much, just relax and enjoy some bacon till you hear back.

Saw it on FB, the Dole Whip Spiced Rum is back for the Flower and Garden Festival. And, even better, I'll be there.

I passed my black belt test so thanks for all the encouragement over these two years.

Congrats.

I know that was a very pro military post but at the moment I know it's the best decision for my family.

That is always the best way. Even though it isn't always the most fun.

Free park tickets may be dangerous. I'd spend my whole paycheck at WDW. Does WDW have free housing as well? :lmao:

Thanks. And, way to go Team Sparrow, where it's always time for a beer.

I get how you feel... FSA is just something to soften the blow of being away I know it does not make up for it. I know it's a little easier being in the AF where I deploy to Qatar not Afghanistan. So I can see how it's a little bit different. I also have only had to PCS once and that is to where I am now.(been here 7 almost 8 years). That was our plan too when the kids got to school age.... But we only have the infant right now. I know it is possible to find something that would match the salary you are making now but it might be a little off and a little challenging to find. Like I always say to my wife when we are trying to plan a trip and money looks tight "where there's a will there's a way". So if it's what you really want you can make it happen.

Hey Guys-
Not sure if there is a specific place for this, but I figure more eyes would see it here. I have a friend that is looking to rent some DVC points for a quick stay this May. He needs 32 points for a stay at Saratoga. I'd rent him mine, but I'm all tapped out. If anyone has some points burning a hole in your pocket, shoot me a PM or a text or a facebook message or a carrier pigeon or a smoke signal. Thanks!

Perhaps people are DISappointed with the speed of the DIS lately. :confused3

Morning everyone!

:badpc:

Morning guys...Happy Family Day/Presidents Day.

:thumbsup2

Family Day???? What's that? ;)
.

It's the day where the dds stay home from school, in order to make up the missed pajama day in June. :furious:

Hi Norm. It has been pretty quiet in here lately.

Well, I guess you should enjoy the quiet. In a couple more months, you won't have quiet again for another decade.
