I had a huge argument on the Community Board with somene about that a few years ago. She seemed to think that incidents that had happened here in Canada could have been prevented if someone had simply had a gun. She couldn't even get it through her head that we are not allowed to carry guns.

Some people don't get it.....it's never that simple.

Never.

Ever.

Ok, so here's my take on the whole gun thing.

We've already established the dude was an absolute moron for taking it in there (especially that POS weapon which is as much a threat to the person shooting it as it is to the intended target). Furthermore, it was lost in a position that a child could have found it and, children being children, done something tragic. Heck, my five year old turns sticks into guns, if he found a real one, unattended, he might think it was one of his toys and might pull the trigger thinking nothing of it. The results could be tragic.

I'm a Firearms Instructor for a Federal Law Enforcement Agency, and have been a Firearms/Safety/Tactics Instructor for over 17 years. Most of my weapons are locked in a safe in my Garage at all times except for a shotgun and a handgun locked in a safe in my room "just in case". I've been threatened enough and have had people I've arrested show up at my house enough times that I feel the need to at least have some sort of defense nearby.

The Rifles (AR15, MK 18, .308 Remington 700--as well as my tactical shotgu n), and all but one handgun, stay in the safe and do not come inside. Period. They ride with me to work, get put back in. Or get taken to the range, cleaned outside, and put back in. That's just the way it is at my house. My family's safety is paramount to me.

In regard to CCW, I believe everyone should learn to shoot and be able to defend themselves, and I strongly believe in a non restricted view of the 2nd Amendment. Should there be disqualifiers for Felons, drug addicts, mentally ill...ABSOLUTELY.

I believe if you purchase a weapon, you should be required to complete a 30 day training course with a CERTIFIED Instructor prior to being allowed to carry it on your person. I'm not talking about these one day, fly by night places that have the bare minimum for each State's CCW law. Not all places are like that, but when I teach it, the class is 30 days (not all day) and by the time you're done, you know your stuff or I don't sign your certificate.

I could go on for hours, but I guess the bottom line is training and common sense, which ain't so common anymore....I can promise you this, the twelve inches or so between your ears are far more important than weapon caliber or type of ammo.

Want to know the value of a millisecond? Ask the guy who finished second in a gunfight. We're trained to keep our wits while everyone else is losing theirs. This is no one way range---it's great that you can shoot a bullseye all day long at the range.....how do you shoot when that paper target is shooting back at you?

Anyone feel comfortable drawing their weapon in a panicked Disney Crowd to respond to a shooter? When you are there with your family? While women, children and others are running around between you and him screaming/crying and what not.

So you draw your weapon and fire from 25 yards away? How good are you at 25 yards? What happens next if you miss, or even if you hit (Magic rounds that pick bad guys up off their feet and slam them dead to the ground only happen in Hollywood....)? Guess who they're going to start shooting at next?

You prepared? Mentally?

If you've taken that responsibility on yourself you better be!

When you're on vacation and you're "turned off"? I'm not. At Disney I'm in my happy zone...I am in no way shape or form in the same mindset I have at work....heck, I don't have that same mindset at home. Home is home.

So I guess, yes I think CCW is a good thing. People just have to realize that they taken on significant responsiblities when they sign that paper. I'm not sure they all do that....they should. It is a grave responsibility.

Trust me, those that carry for a living have that beaten into our heads from day one.

I couldn't agree more. I am a gun owner and I've applied for my CCW, although not received it yet. I essentially wanted to get it while Indiana is still offering their lifetime license, because with all the gun control talk lately, that option will likely go away soon.

The main reason I never got a CCW license yet is because I'm in the category of one of the main points you made... I'm not trained for those scenarios and I'm not sure I want that responsibility in a pulic setting and so I've never had much desire to walk around with a loaded gun strapped to me. As far as home defense goes, I've got the 12 gauge and some buckshot at close reach if needed. I feel prepared to defend my family and home if need be, but as far as discharging a weapon in a public setting, even for self defense... well, there's a lot you need to think about.

Did you guys see the Daily Show bit about this latest Rob Ford incident?

the (who I now call ) rotten kid sent me a text today. just filling me in on her day. informs me how cool it is to see the parade and firework twice in one night and not have to fight anyone for a good seat.:rolleyes2

also tells me she is getting use to the heat. loves it!!! even eats outside when she gets a chance. shes like her dad, the hotter the better as long as we don't have to sleep in it. I don't know if she going to want to come home.lol

the best thing I think is all the people she is meeting. every day the list gets longer.lol I don't try to keep track.

Why would she want to come home? It is the happiest place on earth. You all just need to go visit her more.

Morning guys! Heading up to Ft. Wayne today. I mentioned it on FB, but forgot to do it here. Our first home study visit is this coming Monday. To say I am a little nervous is an under statement :scared:

Good luck, you'll do fine. Just don't put the Sicilian threat on them just yet.

Morning Guys.

DW left this morning for their school trip so it is just DS and I until Sunday night. Unfortunately I am working all weekend.
!

Mean ole boss sticking it to you again?

I don’t have to work all weekend, but I do have to work Sunday…
And it’s just work-work so there's zero fun about it…
And I don’t have the option of saying no…
And I don’t get paid for it…
:sad2:

I don't think of that sounded right. Is Darcy your boss?

Morning

Prayers your way, but I am sure it will go well...

Don't look at me :rolleyes1 Although for the record, I'm home today too, everything developed into a nasty headcold. Rather just get over it quick.

I'm home too. I have the stapler unpacked, but my new office just isn't as comfortable as the old one to nap.

She probably see all of it. The key is you only hear about it when she sees the bad stuff.:

I hope your right. But, she would have said something if she had seen it. I really got it good the last time, so I think she stopped reading after that

We have had a weird head cold thing going around. DD has double ear infection right now. The whole family's ears are blocked. It's pretty funny since no one can hear each other.
]

Hope all get to feeling better soon.

Ok, so here's my take on the whole gun thing.
.

Thanks for the input.

I support gun ownage and home protection, and have two shotguns in the house for such an emergency. My children have been around guns and I will have them learn gun safety before they ever start shooting them. I am a decent target shooter, but have never considered a CCW license because I don't know what I would do in an emergency. If there ever is one at home, I hope the sound of the shotgun is enough to scare someone away, and if not, that I am close enough that it will hit them. Some of my ex-military/ law enforcement friends talk to me about their training - shooting with distractions around them, shooting while walking, shooting with their left hand. And, not just initial, but ongoing training. I don't know of any place around here that has that type of training for us civilians.

Then, there is my other friend is is getting "prepared" if the USA collapses. I think he said there are more guns than people in his house, and he now has 2000 rounds of ammo. He may have just been making it up. He said he bought his wife a .357 for defense at home. She weighs 125 tops. :sad1:

Well said sir :thumbsup2

I am not a gun owner, but I am not against it. I choose not to own one. I grew up with them and was always taught safety first. I have no idea what I would do if I was in a public situation where there were shots being fired. I taught self defense and martial arts for over 15 years but that is something completley different. You are talking one one situations usually.

You said best FED, YOU and your colleagues are trained for those types of situations. Maybe he just wanted to feel like a bad a$$ by carrying a weapon into WDW, I don't know. I have seen enough knuckle heads who think a gun makes them tough.

Really?

I was afraid it might be a little over the top.

I have a field day with the armchair/internet commandos who insist that "One Concealed Weapons Permit holder could have stopped the Aurora movie theater shooter"...

Really? Facts and reality tell me otherwise.

Sadly though, I think in other recent scenarios (mainly Newtown), a competent CCW Holder may (STRONG emphasis on MAY) have made a difference.

It was well thought out, concise, factual, accurate, and told with no radical political agenda. I totally agree with you but that sort of thing has no place on the internet.

Wish me luck gents I'm venturing out into the wider boards...

open up a new thread, you need advise on taking your child out of school to go to Disney so you can bring your mugs from last year. your not sure if you can cut back in line to only move half way across the row after you have taken your son into the ladies room via the stroller you had your son sitting in for more then 10 minutes. :lmao:
