Friday home from work early ownage. The folgers tasted way better today, avoiding the cup of Dunkin donuts coffee prior to.

I'll have to follow Paul since I'm guessing Norm isn't driving to the northeast first.

Thanks for noticing. I didn't realize I was at 4K. I guess it's time to thank all the little people.:lmao::lmao:

Maybe you can find KY? It's south of them crazy Hoosiers.

Morning guys! Happy Friday to one and all.

Getting ready to take Little Man (10 weeks) for his first round of shots. I'm thinking that Mom is going to be more upset than him. Here's to hoping everyone handles it okay.

Hmmm, bourbon may be good for his first set of shots. I'd wait for him to get older before tequila. :lmao: Hope all goes well.

Crud, beverly peanut butter norm

On the way to take the dog to the kennel before our camping trip this afternoon the van broke down. We have to stuff everything into my Fusion. At least here and not on the way to Cincinnati.

Using my name as a curse word? Karma sure does stink for you.

A true role model.

Hi all

Been a while since I stopped in here last. Hope everyone is doing well. I see Norm is still keeping the place alive :)

Trying to keep the tradition alive. Good to see you back.

Hey Andy,

Any opinion on the no passing of the farm bill? Does that effect you guys?

My opinion is that a Bill needs to be passed. This is a Bill that is essential to our Nation's economy and security. Keep in mind that approximately 80% of this Bill's budget is actually for the SNAP (food stamp) program.

Do I think that it is important to have some sort of a program to protect farmers? Absolutely. We have had a strong program to support agriculture in this country since the Dust Bowl years and I think it is important to provide the protection for our agriculture industry in case of another similar event.

Over the years the program has become very wasteful. I certainly think they definitely need to make sure there is a reasonable cap on what an individual/entity can receive under the farm program and they need to take steps to close loopholes that are being taken advantage of now. I know the rice and cotton farmers in the southeast wouldn't agree with me here, but I'd like to see all direct payments to farmers just go away. Most people seem to think farmers are making big bucks collecting government subsidies, but honestly, what we get through those payments is insignificant compared to the current cost of inputs and the value of the crop. I actually keep my direct payment money in a separate bank account, and plan to pay it back in income tax at the end of the year anyway. Quite honestly, I don't think that is the spirit of the program anyway to pay me X amount of money every year, whether it is a bumper crop or a drought. In my opinion, that program should be there to protect the industry in the case of disaster and only in that case.

I think our crop insurance program is a probably a good thing. Part of the current Farm Bill includes money that goes towards insurance premiums. Some people seem to think that crop insurance is paid out by the govt, but that isn't the case. Basically, what it comes down to is I can buy insurance to cover up to 85% of my crop. The insurance program is monitored and premiums are set by the government, but it is offered by private companies. The current program basically allows a farmer to take out insurance and the government will cover somewhere between 20% - 50% of the premium depending on the level of coverage and type of insurance the farmer wishes to purchase. Quite frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing them strike everything except for the reduced insurance premium or just doing away with crop insurance in general and providing some type of aid to an area (by county, etc) if that county's yield would fall under some type of threshhold due to a weather situation.

I've never had insurance before, because by my math, I can essentially put the money that I'd spend on my insurance premium away and have a nice little fund to protect myself in the event of a bad crop year like last year. What I can't do is tap into that money and then be able to weather 2 years like that back to back, but just by doing some smart things with that "insurance premium" money, I could handle a year like last year every 8 years. The insurance program itself also has a lot of loopholes. There are a lot of farmers that don't like it and never had it just because they've been upset seeing neighbors abuse the program. Some say that in some cases, it rewards "bad" farmers or poor farm management behavior. Even despite that, a lot of farmers that have really been turned off by the expense of it and the way that others have taken advantage of it over the years are buying insurance for the first time ever this year, just because it is almost impossible to survive 2 years like last year in a row. I'm in that boat... never had insurance before, made myself about sick signing up to spend about $40 per acre on it this year. :faint:

Sorry for that long winded answer that got way out of control. Short answer... no, I guess not really. I'm going to harvest a crop this fall no matter what, and I'll be planting another crop next spring. All I know is the longer it takes Congress to figure out a plan going forward, the longer we're going to continue wasting money due to some of the inefficiencies of the old program.

I am going to be in the Williamsburg VA area July 10- 12 (mostly Busch Gardens, might hit VA Beach) If anyone is going to be in the area let me know:thumbsup2

Just found out that we made plans to see Monsters U Friday night at the drive-in! Double-feature of that and Man of Steel which I will gladly see a second time. Family of 5, 2 movies, $23 total. Not bad. Only bad part is that Friday is literally the longest day of the year and due to dusk coming so late, the first movie won't start until 8:50. Mandatory naps for my kids Friday afternoon.

So when the website says to show up extra early, you should listen. We were about the 20th car in line when they sold out. That was an hour and a half before the scheduled start of the first movie. This place is 40 minutes away. Long drive for nothing. Worst part is that I'm getting pressure to try again tomorrow night. That would mean missing a certain hockey game I'm interested in. :(

So we pulled the couch up close to the tv, went to the grocery store to buy snacks with the kids money (they were psyched to spend their own money at the concession stand), and put Monsters, Inc on. The kids seem happy.

Randall I see Southwest Airlines now has a plane called Penguin One they teamed up with Seaworld, it has a giant penguin on it, sounds like a good form of transportation for you:thumbsup2

Thanks for the insight. I think having the food stamps tied to the farm bill is just silly, but that is the way government seems to work. I saw an interesting documentary on the farm bill and big farm producers. Like most of these government programs, if we go back in history and review them, it made sense. But, as time evolved, there were never any changes to the program. It made sense when the USA had population expansion, went thru a War, and facing an economic depression. Thanks for the perspective.

Bummer, but great back-up plan.

Was going to make myself a margarita tonight to accompany the Mexican takeout. But decided I needed to finally fix the doorbell (replace everything, transformer included) and didn't think I should mix the two. But the little guy didn't pretty good and is down for the night.

I live in the area and depending on how Little Man is doing and if DW is up for taking him, maybe we can arrange a meetup.

Evening guys....

man this ha been a long week at work, they are scheduling skeleton crews and with a nice week heading to a Hot weekend, it's even busier. We are way behind. I've been frustrated with that and my "menial role" in the store but felt gratified that today everyone was flipping out :thumbsup2 Got an early shift tomorrow now to get things better.

Been sleepless due to my little birthday girl getting a bad gift, strep throat! Coughing all night. Took her to the hospital kids clinic and got what we needed to make her feel better, hopefully some sleep tonight too.

Morning Guys.

Last day of school here for the students, teachers have one more official day.

Seems like our trip is getting closer and closer.

We have one week to go.....

Crud, beverly peanut butter norm

On the way to take the dog to the kennel before our camping trip this afternoon the van broke down. We have to stuff everything into my Fusion. At least here and not on the way to Cincinnati.

Norm is a curse word now?

Sorry about the bad luck there, hope the rest of the trip runs smoothly

Morning everyone.....This weekend's agenda is work, and more work :lmao: Have this evening off though. Working tomorrow, but kinda loooking forward to it, I've got a sweet shift. Humidity is supposed to rise today so I'll need to keep the fridges stocked, but busy days are usually good ones. :thumbsup2

Glad to hear all went well. My two dds are so different at dr office. My youngest behaves way better than my oldest when it came to shots.

Hate to hear about the strep throat. Hope the work situation gts better, or at least enjoy everyone else flipping out.

Took your advice and went with BLT. I see many afternoons at the Poly pool in my future...

Also booked Biergarten for us for that Weds night. :thumbsup2 Still work with your schedule? :confused3

I had that part of our schedule blocked out before you booked! :lmao:

Yeah, I enjoy it I have no shame. Today so far isn't too bad, we did lose one to what looked like legit circumstances, the question is will she be replaced? This afternoon looks tight between 2-4:30 when things get busy.

Thanks for the insight. Being from the northeast, we are separated from the farming community somewhat and really it's the farmers interpretations that we need to pay attention to. Prayers that the politicians find a good solution soon.

Sorry you missed out, but it seems the back up plan worked well. We saw Monsters U yesterday. It was a pretty good movie in my opinion. The kids enjoyed it. My new favorite character is Art. I won't spoil it for anyone with details. Definitely worth seeing!
