Hey Dads!

Long time lurker, 1st time poster. Just wanted to wish you all a great trip. Just got back from the World 3 weeks ago. If I would've known about this, I'd have pushed my wife to wait until after the holidays.

Figured I better get signed up and say hi finally. I'm a Western PA native, and father/husband (DW30,DS7). Have read you criteria a few times whenever I need a chuckle, and I'll just go with I qualify for #77 :)

Well, happy times to those who are in the World now, and best wishes to those looking forward to future visits.

Ryan, looks like you and I had this conversation a while back when I posted about it at the other site:

http://disdads.com/archives/1397

But the first two you mentioned are the ones laid out for us in Scripture by God Himself, so that seems like a great place to start! Outward behavior reflects the desires of the heart, so it's the desires of the child's heart that we need to address. Do you want what's best for you, or do you think about others first?

Have you read "Shepharding a Child's Heart"?

Yes--took a class on it at church several years ago. That's where I plagiarized the ideas from. :thumbsup2

Those ideas looked familiar! We hosted one of the Tripps at our church for a conference a few years ago to speak about parenting. Can't remember which Tripp....

A long time ago you posted something that also reminded me of "Wild at Heart". Have you read that one? I think it was your finale post to one of your TRs.. I'm not a big reader, but those are two that I still refer to from time to time.

We did early check in too, and I still set my alarm to check in exactly 24 hours before our flight left. We are still in the back of A. Is your placement in A based on when you purchase the flight, when you register, based on your fare type or based on your status or some combination?
I'm winging it and hoping I get a late A or early B boarding. How come when they tell everyone before boarding that it is a full flight, Everyone sits in a row by themselves anyway? Then the people that are flying together get screwed and have to separate? They know someone is gonna end up sitting next to them. :badpc::badpc:

You could always buy him a DoleWhip Friday night and fill the bottom with fiber powder. A belly full of laxative and lots-o-shaking would either put him in contention for winning the half marathon or slow him way down.
Won't be in MK... but I am eating with him at Via Napoli Friday night. :rolleyes1

Barry's supposed to be buying Dole Whips for Tim. I think if Tim bought him one he'd be instantly suspicious. Better to hide the laxative in the O'hana shrimp pile.
Ohana is Sat night... won't help me for Sat am. :furious:

I've been praying and thinking about the things I desire to teach my children a lot recently. I think I'm frustrated by the number of rules we've had to create thinking that if they had the right basis for their behavior we'd need fewer rules. DW and I wound up boiling down everything to 3 values we want our family to stick too.

1. Love God
2. Love Others
3. Do your best.

This third value has us echo'ing a shortened version of Bill and Ted's Slogan to each other a lot. "Be Excellent".

I've been thinking about this a lot and I'm curious if you guys had to boil it down to 3 things what values would you want your kids to pick up?
Respect yourself
Respect others
Do your best everyday.

We are missing 12 cases of shrimp, anyone know where it is?
It was probably sent down to Ohana... they know Barry is coming. popcorn::

I'm taking a course on counseling that was put together by Paul Tripp. Much of the same ideas, actually.

And yes, Wild at Heart was terrific and a big influence on me, which is probably why I echo some of those same ideas as well. I have enjoyed all of Eldredge's follow-up books as well. I highly recommend last year's book, Beautiful Outlaw.

Very Godlike! :rotfl::rotfl: :rotfl::rotfl:

:lmao: Sometimes I still come from the "Do as I say, not as I do" school of parenting. :rolleyes1

I didn't know anyone read those. :lmao::lmao:

Welcome to the Club. Might be a good idea to pay your dues now when there are fewer of us around.

Did early-check in on Southwest, and still got stuck in group B! :rotfl2: Sop much for paying that extra $20!!! :headache:
I thought they quit selling the priority boarding after it was sold through A.

I do know that people who purchase Business Select fares get at the front of A. Then people who have a higher rewards class, then people who purchase priority seating. I think it is almost impossible anymore to get A just by checking in early.

Good thing I'm bringing my girls so we'll get to board before B. :thumbsup2

I'm not up to speed with that yet... Hope I'm doing it right.
Looks good.

I think it's based on when you purchase early check in. I did so just this week, so probably got stuck behind everyone else who did it...

Nice job on BOG! Can't wait to hear about it! :woohoo:
You're guess appears to be correct. We bought our tickets about the same time as the people flying down with us but that waited and checked in several hours after us and yet are boarding numbers are all together.

My 1 and 2 would be the same as yours. When I try to think of a #3, I think it ends up being a sub-value of #1. An argument could be made that your #3 and #2 are just off-shoots of #1 (and that's a good thing).

But if I had to have value #3, it may be "be fearless". (again an offshoot of #1). Either that or "have fun".
Yeah I think these do tend to derive from one of the items.

We are missing 12 cases of shrimp, anyone know where it is?
Barry?

We use the three general rules:

1) Respect others and treat them as you expect to be treated.

2) Respect yourself and always give your best effort.

3) Always be humble and help those less fortunate than we are when possible.

It is pretty similar. Never even thought to add god in there as a rule. I guess Sunday mass and the fact that religion has always been a part of our lives we take it as a expected. Like your list as well.:thumbsup2
Respect for others and yourself is really important. I like your list.

Yeah I vaguely remembered a discussion about our legacy. What we want to have taught our kids. I guess my thought today was along the same lines but maybe a little more tactical. I'm tired of having discussions about specific behaviors and would love to have something simple that I can point the kids to that everything boils down too.

IE I want to be able to stop saying "don't hit your brother/sister and just ask them "is that respecting or loving your brother/sister"

I need to check out the books you and Chris mentioned. I've most recently been through "Raising a Modern day Knight" ad really enjoyed it.

Welcome. Are you sure your'e allowed to put your DW's age?

My son and I are very similar, most of our confrontations are around things that I can tell are going to end badly for him and behavior that he's exhibiting that I know is going to negatively impact him.

Welcome, your welcome to join the rest of us dads that are stuck at our jobs while the others are at the world, there's also a FB page and Disdads.com, they have an awesome podcast every Sunday and a charity auction but not sure if this past Sunday was the last auction or not

There's more than one advantage to flying armed. We always have to preboard on SWA to ID ourselves to the Captain...

Then it's open seating...LOL

Of course, everyone is looking at you when you do it so they know something is up.

I guess you could get 2 seats together if you boarded last too by flashing some steel. :rotfl2:

I know what you mean. I'm in the same boat--wanting to move from "don't hit your brother" to the reasons why they did it. I've talked to them a lot about how you really have 2 choices: you can be selfish or you can be a servant. That idea came from a Mark Driscoll sermon on marriage that I listened to, but I think it applies to all areas of life.

John Eldredge wrote Wild At Heart plus some follow-up books that deal with what drives a man, and he and his wife wrote "Captivating" together which deals with the things that drive women. I thought these were really good. Shepherding a Child's Heart comes from Paul (I think) Tripp. They all come from a Christian perspective, in case anyone else looking into these would be bothered by that.

I haven't heard of "Raising a Modern Day Knight", but I'll check that out.

My son and I are very similar, most of our confrontations are around things that I can tell are going to end badly for him and behavior that he's exhibiting that I know is going to negatively impact him.

I was just struggling with that last night with my middle son, trying to explain to him how throwing temper tantrums isn't helping him get anything he wants.
