Morning guys.

Friday was the start of an 11-day fireworks festival here in Pohang. The biggest event was a fireworks competition on Satuday night. Teams from China, Poland, and Italy competed. It was pretty cool to watch, but we weren't quite in an ideal area. Well, we were in a great spot to watch, but we weren't near any speakers, so I couldn't tell if the fain music we heard was to go with the fireworks. We stayed for Poland and China, and decided to leave after that, so that we could get a taxi or bus home and beat the crowd (I'd estimate that there was between 10-20,000 people there...like I said, a huge event). I'll see what I can do about uploading some video i took from my wife's iPhone, but that may not be till the end of the week.

In other news, we looked at a few apartments this weekend and found two that we liked. The first one we like was really nice, in a great area (surrounded by good restaurants and shops), had a second floor, and an oven (seriously, that's a huge plus for me, in the 4+ years I've lived in Korea, I've yet to have a true oven....the closest I have is a toaster oven that can barely fit a loaf pan). The downsides- said second floor has a REALLY steep staircase...actually, I think it would be better classified as a ladder, the apartment itself is on the fourth floor with no elevator (not ideal for the wife for when she would have to take the twins somewhere, especially in the first year), and is a bit out of our price range (₩120,000,000...roughly $100,000).

Side note on housing in Korea. It's really expensive. There are basically three ways to get apartments-mei mei (buy), jeonsei (one lump-sum rental fee, generally for a one or two-year contact, but, as far as I know, as long as you stay, you don't have to pay again...it's also kind of a deposit fee, as you get it all back when you move out), and wolsei (monthly payments plus a deposit that's maybe half of a jeonsei). We are currently at a wolsei, but the apartments we looked at we're jeonsei.

The last apartment we looked at we also really liked. It is in a quiet neighborhood, on the second floor, close to my office, and one of my co-workers (who's wife just had a baby at the beginning of this month) lives in the same building. It is also wight next to a beautiful park and is ₩20,000,000 cheaper. The only bad this are it needs a new sink (which the owner will be taking care of before we move in), new flooring and wallpaper (and in Korea, wallpaper goes on the ceiling, as well), and doesn't really have any nearby restaurants or shops.

Both of the apartments were around 1000 sq ft (our current one is about 640sq ft), so that will be a nice step up. DW's gonna be signing the papers for the cheaper one today, and we'll be moving at the end of October.

Congrats Casey. Sounds like a good move for you guys!

Good luck with this apartment hunt...

The second option (jeonsei) sounds odd... you pay a 2 year lease up front, and they never ask you for anything else again? Isn't that kinda like buying... but without ownership? :confused3

I am wondering the same thing, because it also sounds like you get that whole amount back when you move out? If that is the case, that sounds like a great deal!

Hey fellas!

After 2 wonderful weeks of vacation including some time in our favorite place, I'm suffering through the inevitable morning after at work. :headache:

I have no idea what you've talked about in the last 100 pages or so, but that sure is an impressive volume of material. :thumbsup2

Awesome guys, and it was great to see them.
GREAT PICS!

Where was Fed coming from, the beach? Or is he fishing in bathing suits now... just in case? :lmao::lmao: :lmao::lmao:

Fireworks competition???? :cool1::banana::yay::woohoo:

Congrats on finding a new apartment. That extra space is going to be much needed.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. Each country started with a traditional dance, then lit off the fireworks for more than ten minutes each. I only caught the Poland fireworks in its entirety, but just theirs was about 12 minutes long...

Morning guys.

Congrats Casey. Sounds like a good move for you guys!

Again, I'm not 100% sure about it, but I believe that's correct. I know that the second option is the kind DW prefers.

Had a work weekend here helping out some friends with house stuff. First, on Saturday I repaired some flooring for a lady at church. She had a burst pipe under the slab and just needed me to fix the flooring. Basic lock floating floor, but still a PITA to fix a small section. About 3 hours worth of work here:

Then... yesterday I spent most of the day helping another friend tear down a wall so he can convert the garage back into a working garage. This was some back-breaking work here, but he's very happy now.

Soooo glad I have a desk job today!

Morning all…

Spent a pleasant Sunday evening at our area’s annual DCI event (that’s “Drum Corps International” for the more normal folks out there… it’s like a marching band competition on steroids). Exciting stuff and a close competition. That event marks the official beginning of the music season in our neck of the woods (and a dang fine start it was). It’s going to get very busy very quickly in our house.

You already got Celine Dion, you can't have everything.

but feel free to keep her

Talk about weapons of mass destruction… :crazy2:
Unleashing that plague on us is one of the reasons we give y’all such a hard time in the first place.

And yeah, its kinda linke buying, but you get you money back when you move out. Even after 4 years in Korea, I don't completely understand the idea behind their housing plans....

That’s a very different way of doing things (and a might confusing). Hope the search for a larger place goes well.

Morning Guys!

Been a busy weekend for me, bought a used toyota yaris, now I'm trying to get the last minute stuff done before heading to Manassas to pull 4 or 5 days of 12-16 hrs to make a deadline.

Congrats on acquiring a new (to you anyway) reliable ride.
Condolences on the upcoming work schedule. May that pass by quickly.

And, I never saw any directions posted unless they were in white font.

That’s explains much!

I figure that all the important stuff must be posted in white font
No wonder I never see any of it.

Mornin' Dads...

Well, it's official....we're definitely going to be at WDW next June the week of my birthday!

It's off site, and probably will only do 3 or 4 park days....but it's official!

Very cool…
We all need a Dis trip for our birthday
Happy planning!

I would say welcome home, but I know better.
I will say it’s good to hear from you again and I’m looking forward to hearing about the trip.

Oh… and as for the hundred pages you missed…
Make sure to read all the stuff written in white font...
(Apparently that’s where all the important stuff has been hiding).

I would prefer that one too! :thumbsup2

I'd offer to help with the move, but the distance thing makes it just a little challenging...

Love a good DCI event butt haven't been in years. Dad and my uncle were involved in it before I came along. The old days when most towns had a fraternal organization and a lot of them supported corps. After my brother and I came along he didn't participate, but he still liked to go to the competitions. Mom never really got into them.

Way behind on everything and not even going to try to catch up. DS and I are back in the holler and living the bachelor life for a few weeks. SWMBO and Jr.SWMBO stayed north to enjoy air conditioning. Not a problem really as it will give us some time to work the bees, sort out junk, eat lots of junk, and ease back into the routine again.

I don't know what we talked about for the last 100 pages or so either, but you can rest assured that cheap shots were taken at engineers who weren't around to defend themselves.:rolleyes1

Tearing down walls is the fun part. It's the clean up and the actual construction part that is supposed to be back breaking.

Talk about weapons of mass destruction… :crazy2:

Nice meet ups! You didn't take the family?

The finales will be in Indianapolis in a couple of weeks…
You’re a lot closer to that event then I am.

I’ve been following DCI since I was in my teens (back in the Stone Age). DW had never heard of such, but I took her to a show on the same night that I “officially” proposed to her… she actually enjoyed the whole thing (true story). Our son is now a rabid music fan and follows one of the corps in particular as closely as most teens follow a favorite sports team (and he plans to audition for them this coming season). He actually bought the tickets to the show last night. Given the amount of time we spend volunteering and working with our school’s music department, you could say that we’re all pretty hopeless geeks.

Goes without saying…
:rotfl2:

By the way...
Have y’all gotten any useful rain up there or is this crop pretty much done for?

Wow, unless "ID" him in Canadian is a strip search procedure, I just don't get it. Sure, I may be  at the moment, but then I'd move on. Whether or not they were wrong at the time, this incident sounds so minor that I wouldn't think it worth my time to continue to let it upset me.
You'd think so, but this guy is an beverly who wants to make a big deal out of something to prove he's a big shot. It was over freaking packs of Cold Shots (A 4 pack of sub-par Molson Canadian, higher alcohol %, in small mini-cans, useless stuff designed for a quick drink/buzz). It is totally idiotic that it went this far. I really don't need that kind of stress either with my blood pressure as high as it is.

1.7" since July 15 or 1.7" since May 15... however you want to look at it. :sad2:

Too little too late for the corn... yeah, we'll have some, but it isn't going to be pretty. With a dry year, there's potential for it to have Aflatoxin too, which would basically make it worthless.

Soybeans seem to have been rejuvinated by the rain, but we need a little more to fill the pods. They definitely won't be great, but we can still have a decent soybean crop.

Bad enough having to come back to work. Worse finding out I got passed over for another promotion. :sad1:
