DIS Dads DDC XVII - Leap year edition

BAck from Parent Teacher conference. It was not as painful as I had imagined. We have been dealing with a lot of issues with Ethan lately and his grads have dropped like a rock. He has been asking A LOT of questions about his adoption and why and stuff like that. He is dwelling on it and I am worried that it has effected his school work. His self esteem is so low right now because of his grades and feeling unwanted when he was born. We have had to really step up our game and try to reassure him that he was wanted and loved and a God given gift. I impounded his 3DS when his grades dropped and I gave it back to him this evening after our conference. It seems that he made a 100% on his spelling test today. So, that shows me he is trying to move back into the right direction. Say a little prayer for us that he will continue this upswing and bounce back to the old Ethan soon!!

Ethan's lucky to have you and Shari as parents. I know you love him him dearly, it comes through in your posts and pics, and the things that you do for him.

I can't imagine how he must feel, asking questions at that age, about his identity and feeling lost and unwanted. I know with certainty that is not the case.

I would love to think this is a phase he's going through, but I've never dealt with adoption.

Just keep the family strong, and let him know you are there for him through thick and thin, and although he didn't grow inside of Shari, he was always meant to be part of the family, and that is what really counts.

On a somber note I visited one of my best friends and fishing buddy today. He just had back surgery, but something else was "off". They found a large tumor growing out of his right lung into his shoulder and pretty sure it's spread to liver and bones. This man (old enough to be my grandfather, but he's one of the guys) has been a rock in our little fishing group for well over a decade. I've spent hours and hours and days and days in a boat with him...

I've seen this movie before, I know what lies ahead and I know there ain't a darn thing I can do about. I do know one thing, that was only the shell of the man I know and love in that chair today...

Ethan's lucky to have you and Shari as parents. I know you love him him dearly, it comes through in your posts and pics, and the things that you do for him.

I can't imagine how he must feel, asking questions at that age, about his identity and feeling lost and unwanted. I know with certainty that is not the case.

I would love to think this is a phase he's going through, but I've never dealt with adoption.

Just keep the family strong, and let him know you are there for him through thick and thin, and although he didn't grow inside of Shari, he was always meant to be part of the family, and that is what really counts.

Thanks Brian, Tim, BArry, Chris, and everyone else that I have spoken with on here and elsewhere...I appreciate your encouragment...I knew this day was coming eventually. Just as it will come with Lauren when she get a bit older to inquire. We are doing what you said Brian and letting him know that we were ALWAYS meant to be a family. It was always God's plan. Hopefully he will get through this phase and get back his old self soon. He has always been such a happy and loving child. He said every day that it was "the best day of his life".

I know we don't go to disney for another 11 months but what is everyone's favorite character dining? My 3 yr old loved the characters last time so we are looking to do more of these.

Sending lots of love Steve! This has gotta be something amazingly hard to deal with for Ethan.

I'm sure he'll realize how blessed he is to have you guys. He just needs time.

Personally I don't have experience in this arena, but I've watched a lot of families go through it. We have an inordinately large number of families in our church who have gone the adoption route - most to augment the children they had naturally, but several who couldn't have children for one reason or another. It's been an amazing thing to watch. I'm sure you and Shari work hard to be great parents and demonstrate how much those two precious little bundles mean to you both. But yeah, these kinds of things do come up. I'll be praying for you both as you continue to move forward, and for Ethan as he struggles with his own feelings and situation.
