I need a ruling on how you count your states.

1) Does an airport layover count?
2) Do I actually need to step on land?

First question is fairly self explanatory, but for the second, let me 'splain. A few years ago my dad and I went to a fishing lodge in the upper Alaskan inlet on the Canadian side of the water. Where the lodge was located though was less than a half mile from the Alaskan shore. Well one day on the boats, our guide got detoured a little, and the next thing we know we've got a park services boat coming up on us, weapons raised. Over the PA the ranger states, "You have entered US waterways under the authority of the Alaskan Park Services. Please return to your waters or prepare for boarding." Apparently this wasn't the first time for this guide as his response was, "Sorry Frank, caught a bad current." We pormptly turned around and were back safely in the protected waters of Canada. :lmao:

So would this qualify as visiting Alaska? :confused3

Yes, airports count!

And Yes, you were in Alaska! illegally

And because I'm PPCing.

Let your conscience be your guide. We decided not to count airport layovers--we said we had to actually set foot in the state. So on our first trip to Hawaii when I was in 2nd grade, we had a layover in San Francisco, but we didn't actually count California until we went back and explored it later.

As far as setting foot in a state, I'd say the unintended boat trip to Alaska probably doesn't count. We may have only spent 10 minutes in Oklahoma, but we did physically drive across the border and get out at an overlook. North Dakota was another one we didn't really explore, but we did have lunch at a rest stop there.

Well, you've been to Europe, so you have me beat there. We did cheat on a couple of states. I was only in Oklahoma for about 10 minutes.

That's 10 minutes you'll never see again! :sad2:

Still better than the 7 hours it took me to drive across Kansas. :sad2:

Yes, airports count!

And Yes, you were in Alaska! illegally

Cool. :thumbsup2

I disagree. If you were there, You Were There. But who am I to disagree, you've got 49.

I guess I didn't have the story quite right. He got a speeding ticket somewhere in NC, but the alert hadn't gone out yet so they let him go. Later, a concerned citizen in Lynchburg called in his license plate to police because he was driving erratically and almost hit them. At that point, the license got a hit due to the alert and the police were able to track him down and pull him over. So it sounds like he was very, very fortunate that he didn't kill himself or anybody else.

Thank goodness everyone is all right.

Any update on his condition, or what caused him to get in a car and drive?

OK, so the official rules say I have to follow my conscience. Since I don't have one of those, I'll have to follow my nemesis.

Wow, Fed gets around!

I have to disagree. Anytime you illegally cross a boundary line and have guns pointed at you, it gives you a story to tell. If you have a story to tell, you've definitely been there.

You visit the states to make memories there anyway don't you? Isn't that what it is all about? :confused3 :lmao:

Still better than the 7 hours it took me to drive across Kansas. :sad2:

We did that drive, too. That is a painful one. I also remember Iowa as being 4 hours of corn.

Delaware (why would I go there? :confused3)

You mean you didn't read my quality Delaware Tourism Bureau chapter in my TR? :confused3

Well, I guess you'll miss out on a Philly cheese steak from your nemesis. No 2-hour wait, either.

I disagree. If you were there, You Were There. But who am I to disagree, you've got 49.

It's hard to count an airport. All you see is the same uncomfortable chairs and Starbucks they have at every other airport.

Thank goodness everyone is all right.

Any update on his condition, or what caused him to get in a car and drive?

We need to get the doctors to figure out what was going on. He definitely wasn't in the right mental condition, so hopefully we can figure out what caused it. Could be anything at this point. But I don't think we'll let him drive anymore.

OK, so the official rules say I have to follow my conscience. Since I don't have one of those, I'll have to follow my nemesis.

Always a good idea. I dares ya to cross this line.

Further exploration required:

Alaska
Utah

Also known as the "asterisk" states. From what I've seen of Utah and can see from pictures of Alaska, they both deserve further exploration.

Definitely a valid point.
