Anybody know anything on Mary Surratt, the first female hung by the US? She was convicted in a Military Court of conspiring to assassinate Lincoln.

DD17 is doing a paper on her (due Tuesday I think) and I am printing 21 pages off the internet.

I am no expert but have have read a lot on the Civil War. You probably have all the particulars and basic info. One of the things I found interesting was the execution itself. It was a very hot day and someone held a parasol over her head to shield her from the sun. She wore a long black dress that for modesty sake they tied it to her legs so it would’t rise up when they hung her. Damn considerate of them. If you can get a hold of the episode in Ken Burn’s Civl War series, they offer a good recounting of the assassination and her “role.”

The Surratt house is still standing in DC. When I was there many years ago, it was a Chinese restaurant. If she has any particular questions, let me know.

I just saw a movie on this - THE CONSPIRATOR - Very well done.

I highly recommend it.

Anyone else wonder why Angry Birds is so popular? :confused3 I don't get it...

Is it said that I've never played or for that matter really ever seen the game? :sad2: So I can say I don't know the hype.

What is everyone doing for New Years?

The same thing we do every year Pinky...sit around and watch movies and snack...and try to take over the world.

To be honest, the thought of New Years always makes me feel kinda down, I have no idea. I've hosted one party (a dud), been to a party (I was in a depression way back then and got wasted), and the last good one was back in 2003 when DW and I went and had a late dinner in the 360 restraunt in the CN Tower, and rang in the New Year there. Last year we stayed here at the In-Laws, and I was the only one awake at midnight, reading in bed :confused3. I'm just not a social butterfly.

Never been a fan of doing anything big on new years myself. Will probably just hang in and relax this year.

I can't access these reservations at work, but I remember that the agreement said that they would charge unless cancelled > 24 hours in advance. But I wonder how much they will enforce this (especially if you call with a story about a crying 1 year old)
I believe it started in October...

No Shows get charged $10 per person, unless cancelled 24 hours in advance.
I like this idea...10dollars per preson wont break the bank but it is enough to make people not want to double book!:thumbsup2
Thanks for the info. I can applaud Disney for trying to cut down on the double bookings but man, they aren't making it any easier for families with young kids. There have been a few times where we didn't make it to an ADR. One time we overslept, one time after eating breakfast at CM we missed our lunch at R&C because we were just too full. I can't see paying $40 because we were too full? $10 of that being paid for an infant that wouldn't be eating any food in the first place. :confused3:confused3

I have worked NYE the last 5 years but I'm off this year. We are having a few friends come over for some dinner & drinks and probably play some games with the kids.

We are now watching POTC: On Stranger Tides, a present from DW. I would like to get the first 3.
:thumbsup2<--thumb!

I received that as a gift too! Now I need to find some time to watch it. popcorn::

Has anyone stayed at both POR & PORFQ??? I think we have narrowed down to these resorts. What did you think of each? What are the plusses/minuses of each? Any other info I should know?????? :confused3:confused3 :confused3:confused3

I have never stayed at either.

We are staying at POR in August.

If you check the resort board, there's usually a thread on comparing the two...

We chose POR because from what I've read, people say they prefer it. It's a bit bigger, more spacious. Nice gardens, and paths. Yeehaw Bob plays in the restaurant. And it is currently being refrubed so all rooms have Queen size beds.

With that said, I believe POFQ has already completed the refurb, and all rooms do have Queen Size beds. The counter serve also has Beinettes.

My friend is going the exact same time as me, and has booked POFQ. He has never been to WDW.

Yep. I like FQ more but just by a little bit. FQ is smaller and easier to get to anywhere you want to in the resort. I also like the theming there more. Bus service is quicker because you only have one stop. It does on occasions run to POR but that has only happened to me a couple of times. That was a while ago.

POR is a much larger resort with multiple bus stops. I prefer the mansion’s sections. It has a sit-down restaurant, better pool and the rooms are bigger. And Yeeha Bob performs in the lounge (Love Bob). Not sure you want to bring the little one but he gets younger kids involved and Juliana might like it. Landscaping can not be beat. It is beautiful with lots of nice areas to stroll around. Buggy rides are available but I have never done that.

Chances are you will have a refurbished room with Queen beds in both resorts.

Edited to add a couple of Pics of FQ room

We stayed at POR last August, and then for a single night back in Nov. (The single night was because we did one night there, then the rest at OKW.) We have not stayed at POFQ, so I cannot compare the two from personal experience, but for POR:

POR has a nice, relaxed feel. Nice paths, and we had a refurbed room on our second stay, which was very nice. (Not sure we had a queen bed though, but the trundle was a big plus for DD.) As a family, we loved the bathrooms - double sinks, but outside the shower/bath area, with a curtain that can be pulled to screen the sinks from the rest of the room. There can be a bit of a hike to a bus stop, however it is no worse than some of the other resorts, and actually better than OKW.

It is a bit of a hike to get the beignets, but there is a boat service between the two, although, as it typical of the boats, you can often walk it faster than riding. And the layout can be a little confusing, but again, after a day or so, we knew our way around.

We've stayed at POFQ twice and will be staying at POR when we go back down in 2 weeks. We preferred POFQ because all the rooms have already been refurbed and they have queen size beds. We liked the smaller resort size of POFQ and would have booked there again, but they were already sold out.

I went to high school just down the street from the Surratt house. The house is still standing as a museum. http://www.surratt.org/ It was neat to walk through it and see the secret places in the walls where they could hide guns.
Growing up I swam competitively and the grandchildren? great great children? of Dr. Mudd swam in the same division as me. They were pretty good.

Addendum to post above - even though we have not done POFQ, I would stay at either one without hesitation or concern. Either one is a pretty good choice, IMO.

Reading your comment made me go back and read a little more info on her. The Surratt house which has been turned into a museum was the family farm that she wound up losing after her husband passed away. She moved to downtown DC and that's when she got involved with JWB. Growing up near Surrattsville Highschool and passing the Surratt house every day on the way to school I just assumed that that house was the one that was involved in Lincoln's assassination.
