DDA's New Year's Weight Loss accountability Thread

I am here! :wave2: Just a little :crazy2: ! I did not feel like I had much to contribute! Hopefully I will perk up soon.
Thanks for checking on me. :flower3:

Glad you're back, and you ALWAYS have something to contribute... even if it's just hello! :goodvibes

Ok, the new DDA thread pointed me in this direction.

I joined Weight Watchers the week before Thanksgiving. I have lost 16lbs so far. I need to loose about 60lbs more. I have done pretty good staying motivated going to my WW meetings, but another group for support will help out too I am sure.

I have been starting to try to get some walking in, but working 8-5 M-F seems to make it hard for me to get excercise in (and I am not stupid enough to kid myself & say I'll get up & do it before work :rotfl: ). I guess I need more motivation to excercise than to stick to my diet. My husband just ran the 1/2 marathon at WDW & we were talking about doing it again next year but couldn't work it out in combo with the cruise we want to book, so I will be shooting for running/walking the 1/2 marathon in 2008.

Yall are the best & I look forward to checking in as frequently as I can.

Good luck everybody.

I was a bit concerned when I didn't see you for a while. Gotta keep an eye on everyone. Since we're all in this together.

OK, I FINALLY caught up to all you "do-gooders" and started exercising yesterday. DH and I are still thinking about the WDW 10K in October, so I followed Hal Higdon's Beginning Runner's Guide 30/30 plan. My 5yo DD (Beth) came with me, and she was the BEST walking/running buddy I could have asked for.

The 30/30 plan in a nutshell is that you walk/run for 15 minutes and then turn around and go back, so you total 30 minutes. After the first 10 minutes of walking only, you are allowed to run for 30 seconds at a time, recover (however long you need) and then run again. The last 5 minutes are cool-down, so walking only. (As you get better, you can do that middle 15 minutes alternating running with walking every 30 seconds. I'm not up to that yet.)

Beth was great. She kept up with me the whole time, never complained, and then when I was still wanting to "recover" for a little longer (feeling lazy after my illness), she'd ask, "Mommy, can we run again?" How can you say no to that? So I ran a little more than I would have without my favorite little kick-in-the-butt person.

DSIL who ran track in HS and college and is a marathoner says that kids shouldn't really do track until they're older. I need to find out just what Beth is "allowed" to do at this age -- I'd hate to lose my running buddy, but I don't want her to do any damage. I'm off to read Hal Higdon's take on this, but wanted to see if you all had any ideas as well. Most of all, I know that her dietary needs will increase, and I'm going to have to get her to eat a little more. (Ah, to have such problems.) If/when I progress to running only, I think she'll need to stay home, but for now, it's a great way for us to spend time together.

My dd likes to go with me too!! You're right, they are great motivatiors!!

One of the reasons I believe they frown on kids in track (and it used to be football!! sheesh) is because of their bones - running is hard on their joints - their growth joints... when ds was in hockey he had a knee injury and the doctor was explaining and showing ds the growth plates on his feet, ankles and knees (it was the best visit - told our tiny ds he'd be 6ft tall - he was always the tiny kid - and he is 6ft tall!!)

So it adds stress to their joints, dd does run sometimes, but mostly I let her ride her bike near me... and we have the rule she has to see me at all times...

Good running!!

I could have used a kick in the butt, but then I think I would have cried. My back is killing me, this stupid UTI is gonna drive me nuts between the backache and the nauseousness. I did go for a walk today maybe 10 minutes-better than nothing.

A bike or rollerblades, might be a good idea for your DD, depending on where you are walking and running.

Welcome Melanie. I know I can always use motivation in the exercise department. I just hate to exercise.

Chris took the boys snowboarding tonight. They apparently got a good workout as they were all exhausted. Chris says he may have a little bruising on his backside in the morning :rotfl:

I had to work tonight so I missed out on all the fun :upsidedow

Becky -- Hope you are feeling better today! :wizard: :wizard:

Well, I just wanted to post an update to how I am doing with my weight loss/exercise:

I have walked most days anywhere from 20 to 35 minutes, which is an accomplishment for me in the winter, because I usually don't feel like going out. We have had nicer weather than usual which has helped, and I am more motivated thanks to my goal of doing the 1/2 Marathon next year, and the support of this great group of people.

I have successfully stuck to my WW plan for 12 days now, and have seen a loss of 5 pounds in the first week. Of course the weight loss has slowed right down this week, but I kind of expected that, so I am not worried.

I hope everyone is having a great week, and keep up the good work!

Ellen

Thanks for the welcome Deb. :teeth:

Motivation for the day..........
from Weight Watchers 101 secrets for success.

"The greatest thing you have is the 24 hours you have in front of you. The past is gone, the future is distant. Today you can succeed. Set a goal you can achieve within the next 24 hours."

Today I am going to stay on plan & stay focused on my goal.
It's baby steps isn't it?? But the baby steps add up to miles pretty quick.

Take care all!!!!

Becky, hope today is better, may those meds finally work to get that nasty infection out of your system!! But it doesnt look like you are letting it get the best of you!! Keep working baby steps!!

How's everyone else doing???

I'm wasting time - trying to 'guilt' myself into doing some exercise!!

It is cold here today! Well, I guess 50 for January is not really cold, but it is windy and cloudy.

DH is annoyed I will not walk outside! I told him I would do the treadmill!

THe good news is that I think he is really enjoying our walking/exercise time together!

My kids are 12, 10 & 6. We don't leave them often to go out, but 30-60 minutes for a neighborhood walk is fine. It has been healthy and a good connection for us!

So we are sticking to our walking, now if I could just QUIT EATING!!!!!!!!!

Off to clean dd's room with her and drink some water! :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1

Hope I can finish all of those!!! :dog2:

I took the plunge! I signed up for the Discover Challenge, which has an offer from Bally's Fitness Center - 8 totally FREE weeks - now I didnt believe it was completelyfree, Bally's is known for contracts, sneaking things in... but this is - no signing anything... they try to talk you into 7 sessions with a personal trainer for $250...

So I start Monday 1:00 I'm going to learn how to use the machines, learn how to do it... then I'll sign up with the Park District, (no instructions, just the room!! )

That's awesome. I would have taken advantage of that deal too, but traveling a couple of hours each way to the nearest Bally's just didn't seem like such a great idea to me :confused3 . Oh well, just have to exercise here.

Ok, I figure you all are tired of the fish recipes I've been sending your way. Tonight I tried a low carb chicken dinner that got rave reviews from all but one of my family. If you're interested I'll post it. It's Easy Apple Chicken Skillet. Here are the numbers: 100 calories per serving, 3 grams of Fat per serving, and 11 grams of Carbs per serving.

Let me know if anyone's interested!

Let's see it girlie!

Ok. Here it comes

4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
1 Tbs. vegetable oil (I like to use Olive Oil)
1 red apple - cored and sliced into 1/2 inch wedges
1/4 C. dry white wine - or use apple juice and water 1/2 and 1/2
1/2 C. chicken broth
1/8 C. cider vinegar
2 Tbs. cornstarch
1 1/3 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper to taste

Heat oil in a large skillet. Add chicken and brown on all sides. Add apple slices, saute 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 1/2 the wine and chicken broth, reduce heat, cover and simmer 10 minutes. Mix remaining wine and broth together with remaining ingredients, add to skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until sauce thickens.

I served this with a big green salad, and roasted red potatoes for my regular carb eaters. For myself, I roasted a small rutabaga. It was wonderful!
