DDA Chapter 20

Part of our issue will be whether or not DS has any sort of marching band thing in August before school starts. The APs are the other issue.

That could definitely be an issue. Around here, bands have a week-long band camp in early August and then practice regularly until school starts. Good luck planning your trip!

:wave2: Hi! Our grill party of 25 has now dwindled down to 10 (and that includes Bob and I). Of course they all called/texted/emailed after I finished grocery shopping. Anyone feel like traveling to OH for burgers, hotdogs, potato salad, huge veggie salad, baked beans? It's ready around 5pm!

I should pack shouldn't I? I leave next Wed. for DISNEYLAND!!!

I would totally be there if we could. Sounds delicious!

We're home. Nick's team lost, but they played MUCH better then they did on sunday. Hopefully the next team they face will not be quite a good as this team and then they can probably pull off a win. Both boys have games on Monday night. Chris is excited to get his team on the field for their first game.

I'm glad they are doing better. Best of luck on the next game.

Ahhhhh, glorious peacefulness. After a crazy and somewhat yucky day, it is definitely ending on a high note. Terra and I went to Red Robin for an (very) early birthday dinner (okay, to that's not the peaceful part). Love love love the bleu cheese burger there. Now Phil and Terra are creating an obstacle course for the hamster toy downstairs and I'm enjoying a wonderfully lonely night in our room with some good music and the computer. Just what the doctor ordered. :cloud9:

Deb - Good luck at work in the morning. I hope it's not too crazy.

Tammi - Sorry that the deal isn't better than that, but I'm glad you got to keep the house and DVC, even if it does make it a little tough. I'm sure you'll make it work though! Enjoy your muffins/doughnuts in the morning. Sounds like fun.

Elizabeth - I can only imagine you forcing that mom onto the phone with dining. :rotfl:

Elin - Glad you got some sunshine, if only briefly, today. I highly considered the seasonal light things in the height of a Boston winter.

Kelli - Happy packing!

Terry - I hope your toe feels better tomorrow. The new computer sounds great! I was looking at those online a few weeks ago.

Theresa - Poor Josh. I could manage to get past most of those things, but maybe not even going to the graduation. That's just insane.

ditto

Robyn - I'm so sorry for Emma. I can't believe some of the things kids say sometimes and even worse when it's towards your own child. Lots of  and wishes that you can work it out.

Tia said it so well.:hug::hug::hug:for both of you and Lilly too

Well, I think the Main Street Electrical Parade music coming on is a good sign off point as I'm tired. The obstacle couse turned out to be pretty impressive. Maybe I've got a budding engineer as well. I think I'll finish up my computer stuff while this song finishes and hit the sack. I still owe Terra nature hike so we may be doing that tomorrow as well. I guess we'll see how the day and weather play out and go from there.

Good night all!

I got our Mickey Monitor for passholders this week. We got 4 Discount cards to pass on to friends for a 10% savings on annual passes. You have to purchase the annual passes by July 31. Each of the cards allows a maximum of six purchase discounts.

Anyone buying annual passes before July 31 and want the 10% discount?

hmm I am thinking of getting an AP for me when we go since we are still planning on going next May. I do have a question for you all. Olivia's ticket is free except for the park hopper part I paid for. If I upgraded her ticket to an AP would I just get the price I paid or the hopper part off her ticket. When is the best time to upgrade the ticket the first day after using it?

Good morning. :)

I was hoping soccer would be canceled this morning, but no such luck.

Good morning!
I am actually excited about today! I am going to the Phillies game--i havent been to a game since i was like 10 years old so im pretty excited. Now I just hope it doesnt start raining.....again!!!

I promised a mini TR from last weekend so here you go! It will be small since most of the weekend was taken up with music stuff. :) I also need to say that this trip is nothing like any other National Concert trip I have ever taken. It was obvious that the economy has definitely affected this multi-national corporation too. Everything from the hotel to the food, the professional co-performers, and even the awards presented to the student performers were pared down… big time.

We left F’burg about 6:00 Saturday morning and were at National Airport and parked in the garage in under an hour. I wish we could fly out of National all the time, but the only safe time to drive up there is on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Any other day it takes hours to get home.

Nackie (my boss) had a total knee replacement a year ago and it takes her forever to get through security. That darned titanium sets off all the alarms. ;) Once through that process we had time to eat breakfast before our flight, which was on time. We had a whole row to ourselves so lots of room to spread out. The flight into Newark was uneventful and soon after arriving I saw Kathrin walking toward me. :goodvibes I can’t believe how long it has been since I last saw her. I am glad we have the beach trip planned for next month (5 weeks from tomorrow, people!!) because I truly miss her every single day.

The AirTrain whisked us off to our car rental and we were off. We opted to not hook up my GPS system since it was a pretty straight shot from the airport to the Courtyard Marriott in Paramus. Nackie got a phone call from her student letting her know that they were already at the local Yamaha School and getting ready to go in to start a rescheduled rehearsal, so we took a detour to the Bergen Mall where the school is located. An aside here… I am SO glad I work where I do. This school is located in the middle of a huge mall. There is no signage and in order to get to the upstairs location you have to use a glorified freight elevator. Once you are on the second floor the studios are off a hallway that also has suites that house a church (yes, I said a church), a MIS company and a real estate office. They are spread out all over the floor of the building with nothing connecting them at all. It was a little off-putting for this “country” gal (NOT) and we discussed that we would not feel safe having to work there until 9:00 at night. All the studio and practice room doors automatically lock when they close for just this reason.

Nackie headed into the rehearsal with Ben and his co-performers and I got a phone call from my student’s mother letting us know that they had arrived at the hotel and were checking in. Kathrin and I hopped back in the car and found our way over to the hotel. After we checked in I grabbed Paula and we went back over to the school so that she could get some practice time in that day. Did you know you can’t make left hand turns across traffic in the state of New Jersey?!?!? You have to do U-turns in a roundabout. Sorry, Jen… this is CRAZINESS! The idea is not bad, but the signage to let you know where to go is awful. I have a suggestion for all DOT offices in the country… After you have built a road and put up the signs you think are helpful to out-of-town visitors, bring a few into your area and let them drive around with you in their cars. See if they can find themselves after they have gotten lost. I bet not! CRAZINESS!! Anyway…. We got about 30 minutes of practice time in before she was kicked out of the studio.

Ben’s rehearsal was over too, so we all went back to the hotel and I was assigned the task of finding a spot for dinner. For some reason my traveling companions thought I would be good at that… ;)

I found a place we later found out is part of a very small chain. It is called Napa Valley Grille with locations in three cities in CA, one in Paramus, one in Providence RI and one in Minnesota (??).

It was outstanding! The menu was inventive and the wine list was amazing. Kathrin and I each did a different red wine flight and the other adults picked a glass of their favorite wine. No adventurous drinkers there! The flight had a 2 oz. pour of each of three wines selected by the sommelier and we didn’t find a bad one in the bunch. I had only ever had one of the 6 before, so it was a wonderful learning experience for us too.

After dinner it was back to the hotel and a little shopping. There was a SYMS department store next to our hotel and we decided to walk off some of our dinner before bed. Kathrin was the lucky shopper that night. She got an Anne Klein “little black dress” for $19 (it had been $169) and a new raincoat for $69 (it had been $169 also). She also had the chance to try on a few pieces from their Prada collection and almost bought a $2100 coat for $299. It was gorgeous, but she really needed the next size up in something that she would keep for the rest of her life. As she said, she probably wouldn’t be the same size in 30 years. The rest of our party had already returned to the hotel so we walked on back and got ready for bed. Sunday was a big day for the performers and Nackie and Kathrin and I were headed on an adventure. ;)

Oh, if only I could! That sounds wonderful.

So... one of the discount cards allows you to purchase up to 6 APs?

It's called a Passholder's Pass-Along Savings Card

Here's what the back reads:

Bring this card to any Walt Disney World Theme Park ticket window on or before July 31, 2009 and receive 10% off te purchase of a new Disney Annual or Premium Annual Pass.

Visit disneyworld.com/savingscard to learn more.

Discount valid May 1, 2009-July 31, 2009 at Walt Disney World Thembe Park Main Entrance ticket windows only. Applies to purchase of a new Disney Annual or Premium Annual Pass only, not valid on Pass renewals; maximum six purchase discounts per Savings Card. Savings is applied to non-discounted price of a Disney Annual or Premium Annual pass. Card must be surrendered at time of purchase and is void if copied or reproduced.

I read that as you can buy 6 annual passes with the 1 card. If someone uses the savings card, we get $25.

Did you know you can’t make left hand turns across traffic in the state of New Jersey?!?!? You have to do U-turns in a roundabout. Sorry, Jen… this is CRAZINESS! . ;)

Its funny that you say that because EVERY TIME we have someone visiting from another state, thats the first thing they notice. I always forget they arent everywhere

We had been lucky on Saturday. There was no rain all day long. Sunday was not going to be as nice. In fact, it was going to POUR all day long. And it did.

We got up and met in the lobby at 8:00 for breakfast. The kids and their parents headed off for Fairleigh Dickinson University for dress rehearsal and the 4:00 concert. Nackie and Kathrin and I plugged in “Jill” (my GPS) and told her to take us to Liberty State Park. We planned to take a ferry over to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty from there. Without going into agonizing detail, Jill was not our best travel guide… She took us on the most bass ackward trek through NJ! I don’t think I could have planned such a poor route, even if I tried my darnedest! We were on roads that weren’t even on my handy dandy AAA map! The highlight of the trip was the roundabout/U-turn she had me take which put me right in the path of an oncoming transit bus!! Luckily I saw him coming and vice versa so we were OK there, but Nackie and I decided we could do a better job using our map and common sense for the trip back.

We arrived at the park and bought our ferry tickets (only $12 each!) and missed the first ferry. We had to stand in the rain for 45 minutes. Luckily we all three had our umbrellas and Kathrin had her new raincoat! Here are a few shots from the pier and the ferry:

We spent some time at Ellis Island. Everyone should go there at least once in their lives unless their ancestors were all already here in America from the get-go. It is an amazing look at what it must have been like to come to this promised land. Plan a trip! I will meet you there!!

My crazy daughter (one of them, anyway!)

We went to a Japanese restaurant after the concert and had a wonderful meal, much like Teppan Edo. We closed the place down at 10:00!

We were all coming home the next day, some by car and some by plane so packing had to be done. Nothing much to report about Sunday itself. I got a little teary when I left Kathrin at the airport… I am a sappy Mom! They confiscated my wine opener during the security process. I have had that thing in my carry-on for years with no problem before. Continental lost Nackie’s luggage on the way home (there were only 12 people on our little Embraer jet and I saw them put her bag on the conveyor belt.

We arrived home to yet more rain. I dropped Nackie off at her house and got home a little after 2:00. I started to teach at 3:30 so I had a minute or two to catch my breath and make certain I had everything necessary for my day and evening. It was a good trip. Both our students played very well and it was wonderful to see Kathrin again. Thanks for reading!

I would love to have one then, Vicki! Thanks so much. :goodvibes

EAT: OOPS! Looks like you have to be at WDW to use it to purchase the AP. That won't work for us. :(

Elin - I call those u-turns to go left "Michigan Lefts". :teeth: First time I saw them was going to see Bob's family in MI and they are known for those. They are proven safer than turning left at a light and keeps the rest of the traffic flowing which apparently doesn't cause as many accidents. :confused3 (Right Vicki??) I don't like 'em either though.

Good Morning! Beans are baking, coolers will be getting cleaned shortly and I have to make a grocery run for caff. free coke and milk. (I'm out and with three pregnant women here, I figured I better get some.) Dinner will be burgers and hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans and green salad; dessert is poor man's parfaits (cut up angelfood, vanilla pudding, fruit and whipped cream in a glass).

Have a great day!!!

Have fun at the game, Jen!

Chanon - I hope the cookout goes well. I wish I could be there.
