The WDW Half marathon is closed for January 2010 as it is filled up. There is still space for the Goofy, Full marathon and 5k.

Well that answers that!! I was trying to decide whether I was going to try to do the 1/2 marathon in January. Now, the decision is whether I do the full marathon or not. I might not go in January at all except I heard how cool it was.

I have a busy few months coming up. Next month my attendants mom is getting married. Then in June I am going to see Rascal Flatts(I am so excited and in a few weeks I will try for meet and greet passes so please send me vibes that I get them) and be in my cousin's wedding. Then in July I will be going to KSDS again for grad retreat and then I am going to visit my cousin in Dallas. can't wait.

Deb-how does your district work? I have one child that is just not progressing and is not meeting kindergarten requirements. Depending on how the rest of the year goes, that child may have to repeat and have another year of Kindergarten--is that an option for Colby?
Are you able to request testing at this age in your area? We have the Child Study Team and teachers are able to refer children to be screened/looked at..
i have to run now, but ill think on this

The teacher says that he is too young for testing. Our elementary program works from K thru 2nd grade on a spectrum. Essentially if they go to school, socialize and participate they move on to first grade. They consider the entire K year to be orientation into the school system. There is no chance of him staying back. I wondered aloud if I should pursue independant testing over the summer, but the teacher wasn't aware of what was available other than through the school. He will be evaluated in the fall with all the other K's and they will go from there. He will have speech therapy in summer school and she is planning to incorporate some reading techniques into the speech therapy too. Basically it is a wait and see situation. Hopefully he matures a lot over the summer. There is another boy in Kindergarten that is experiencing exactly the same things, it is just that Colby is on the older end of the age spectrum for K.

In the first grade classroom I worked with, several of the kids were delayed. In some cases their parents refused any sort of testing, so they did not get any special help. Some of these kids ended up being held back so they could develop and catch up with their peers. Given the sometimes 2+ year age range in the same classroom the younger kids need additional time, as they are just not as old and developed as their peers.

Do you have a pre-first level in your district? That is popular around here in school district, it is after kindergarten and before first grade. It gives kids extra help and time to catch up before first grade.

Could you put him in some sort of summer school or tutoring program? Could he have an aid to help him work in the classroom during the year? Has he been tested to see if he has specific issues?

You say he always needs someone around at home to supervise or help him do things. I would try and spend time to help him become more independent and do things on his own. Or give him ways to have safe experiences where he has the power and says what to do.

Go for a walk have him tell you where to go.

Tell him to do something you know that he can handle. Set a timer and tell him you expect him to have completed it by the time the timer goes off. Sit near by but do something else. Keep repeating this with different activities each time getting further away until you are no longer in the same room as him.

Praise him when he does things independently. Give him time to play on his own. During this time his brothers and everyone else leaves him alone. Start with a few minutes and then increase the time.

As for tying shoes, he will get it eventually. When I was in kindergarten, we learned to tie our shoes with a half inch rope that we tied around our legs. We sat down on the rope with rope ends on both sides of us. Then they had us learn to tie with the big rope. We also learned to tie with two loops instead of one loop and wrapping around.

Good luck! Just remember everyone develops at different rates and lots of kids struggle with a variety of things throughout the years. Some kids are super gifted in some areas and struggle their whole lives with other things. Some seem to have an easy time of everything. Others struggle with everything. Some do not seem to struggle on the outside but are still struggling inside. Everyone is different and needs to learn to best cope with their strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes there are tricks and tips that can help people deal with their uniqueness and succeed in life. It is just a matter of finding what works. I wish you and Colby luck in the journey to figure out what works best for him.

I could have him evaluated for ADD, but neither the speech therapist nor the teacher think that it is ADD. We are meeting with the school on the 11th to update his IEP so maybe I can get more information at that time.

As far as him being independent at home. It's not that he is incapable of doing things independently, he just prefers not too. He won't play a video game unless one or more of his brothers plays with him. He can play independently, but he prefers doing it in the living room while we are in the room doing something else. He has slept in his own room for years and has no problem going in there by himself to go to bed. He has never enjoyed being read to and it is difficult for him to just sit and read unless it is at bed time. He is just a super busy kid. He is very active, inside and outside and he would much prefer being outside. He loves riding his bike or the 4 wheeler, playing lacrosse or just digging in the dirt. He is much like Chris. Chris did not care about school at all until he went to college and his grades showed it. Now that I've had a chance to digest everything I've realized that he is still the same kid he was this morning, he is very bright when he chooses to apply himself, he will definitely be a productive member of society and that's not going to change by someone recognizing what I recognized a long time ago. I also have to keep in mind that he was premature and that could be a factor too. Hopefully the goals that we've set for him will motivate him to try harder.

Wear a mask. :sad2:

Didn't wear a mask... just squeegeed my face off after I came back in. Pollen count was 1700 on Monday. I think it was actually lower today because of the wind. But.... ICK!

I'm glad to have this long stressful day behind me. I hope that everyone is well.

deb- when my little brother(he is 27 in august) was going into kinder my mom saw he was to immature for his age and needed to stay back a year to mature. could you do that with Colby?

Thanks for all the advice and support today. Now I'm off to bed.

Deb - do you not have the option as a parent to make him repeat K? I understand the school can't mandate him to, but if that is your wish it would be different.

Good morning. :)

Well, I heard back from him. He is not accepting my offer, so now we have to go to court. I so hate this.

Our school system doesn't work like that. Colby is in a classroom with K's, first and second graders. The teacher will have the kids do level appropriate work. If after 2nd grade he is still lagging then we could hold him back. Next year he should be doing 1st grade work, but if he isn't ready she can continue with K work. Does that make sense. It's kind of like they aren't really in a grade until they move onto the next classroom, 2 years from now. This of course works in both directions, if they are ready for more difficult work earlier they get that too. Ideally he will mature significantly over the next 2 1/4 years and holding him back will be a mute point. He does have strong areas too. His penmanship is very nice. When he does write you can easily recognize the letters that he used. It's not all bad, those are just the things that you tend to remember when you walk out of a conference like that. Hopefully with extra help from us and help with his speech over the summer we will see huge strides.

:hug:I'm so sorry these legal battles can certainly take such a long time to resolve. It's hard on you and the kids must feel some of it too.

Good morning...

Tammi- Hang in there..'s

Deb- I am sure Colby will be just fine.:wizard:

Becky- I hope you find the motivation you need. I am dreading tonight's weigh in..it's been a bad week. :wizard:

Emma and I are off to Baltimore. She has her GI appointment this morning at 8:30. Need to leave here around 7:20 to make sure we get there and can find parking. So not fun. Hopefully, the dr. will have some advice that will be helpful and get her feeling a bit better.

Have a great day DDA!!!
