Being popular in itself is not a bad thing. It's what some of them do to be/stay popular. It's also the group that they are popular in. Cassidy definitely sounds like a kid who has her head in the right place.
Laura definitely has an interest in boys, but these girls can't seem to go through life without having a boyfriend (even if they change them regularly).
Some of the other things are just differing priorities and not necessarily good/bad...just not the same as ours. You should have seen the production they put on for Snowball last year. That was when Laura and the girls had pretty much already split but us mothers kept trying to get them back together, so we did much of the Snowball stuff with them. It just wasn't the taste, style, or level of expenditure that we are comfortable with. That doesn't mean they are wrong, it just shows that we are different. They have different attitudes towards "needing" the latest fashions, etc.
Cassidy is so excited for prom!! They have changed it from the Natural History Museum (which is where my horrid Senior Prom was) to the Zoo. None of Cassidy's boyfriends would ever be considered great catch material (not popular, handsome/cute by regular standards) but most have been good kids (except pink stocking capped boy) with their heads on their shoulders...looking at the girls and not their bra sizes.
Cassidy's best buds are the band director's daughter and a varsity pom girl who became a marching band techie (lead one after a nasty keying a car incident) just so she could spend more time with them. I can't imagine what trouble these three disney loving kids could get into.
I am blessed (as it seems you are Beth) that I have a kid who is mature and good decision maker.
