DDA Chapter 12

I thought that we weren't going to hold our 2 year old "Mommy/Daddy/Caregiver and me" type class because of low enrollment. My partner moved on to another more secure position. Now we suddenly have 7 people interested, and the director is thinking that we should do it with only me as the leader. Do you think that it is unreasonable for me to ask for 1.5 times last year's pay, since I will now have all the set-up, clean-up, and class prep by myself? The class fees will more than cover my pay plus supplies.

I was hoping that you made them, thanks for the tip about tinting them. :) She said sometimes she will use lemon or orange extract also.

Definitely powdered sugar! I've made these before and they are wonderful. You can tint them with food coloring for any holiday, too!

I would tell the school you want double, since you will be doing the work of 2 people by yourself! Then let them talk you down to a 50% increase. A mistake I frequently made in the past was to ask only for exactly what I felt was fair, then my employer would offer less and I would be resentful about it. I should have gone in requesting more than I thought was fair so there was room to come down. Of course now my bosses are amazing and they are VERY generous, so it's not an issue. My friends have sometimes gone back to their employers after they received a contract and negotiated for more if they felt what was being offered wasn't enough, so you can see what the school offers and try to go up if that works better.

Theresa -

Glynis - have you tried setting limits for when/where you allow thumb sucking? Such as ONLY at bedtime, ONLY in the bedroom, etc? Maybe a rewards chart for when she follows those guidelines? DS was a pacifier guy, and so was my first charge and Princess. The others have been non-suckers - I have never had one that sucked his/her thumb or fingers. My friend had charges ho were 5-7 yrs. and they would ask her for permission to suck their thumbs when they were really tired. Otherwise the thumbs stayed out.

We've tried giving her a bedtime only limit, but it's such an ingrained habit she can't confine it to just then. We drag her finger out of her mouth, and 5 minutes later, it's back. I'm willing to give it a try, though. Katie is working on getting rid of one of her bad habits, and we have a chart. She gets a dollar a day toward a Nintendo DS. I'll have to see if something like that would work for Leslie. Thanks for giving me an idea. Cold hard cash would motivate me!!!

Friday can not come soon enough!! :headache:

I swear I am not sure how I've stuck around for so flip flopping long here (other than the need for money)

Ah, money. That little thing;)

The right job will come along for you. I just know it. In the meantime, focus on Friday and all the relaxing fun we're going to have (not to mention the Cheesecake Factory!)

Well I got my cousin to stop, but that was a long time ago, she is 30 now. Every time she was around me (which was almost all the time) she was not allowed to have her thumb in her mouth and I rarely caught it there. I also told her that she couldn't be sucking her thumb in school as the other kids may not understand and might make fun of her.

Now for the irony. The last time I was holding her son, I was trying to teach him to suck his thumb. :rotfl:

The school thing is what really concerns me. She sucks her finger all the time. I know she's only in 1st grade, but if it continues on much longer, all the other kids will make fun of her. She just doesn't understand that.

I can't believe that I actually encouraged her to suck her finger! That's something I will not do with Peanut. A pacifier is much easier to get rid of!

I don't think that's unreasonable at all! It seems a bit low to me, to be honest. That's a ton of work on top of your other responsibilities. Good luck!

I've also tried it with cherry extract. Good for Valentine's day.

Glynis - I would make a point to tell her "Thumb out!" every time you see it in her mouth. That will make her more aware of it. I know DS got furious every time I would tell him "Stop licking your lips!" this summer, but it did help him stop.
What if you wrap her thumb in gauze? Of course she can pull the gauze off, but if she is sucking without even realizing what she is doing that might help.

Both good ideas. I'll give them both a try! It can't hurt, right?

Has anyone or your kids used puzzlemaker.com for school? Emma has used it twice now and both times all the words are grouped together in one section. It seems like the program needs a little help!

we've used the verbal coaching on both girls...got Cassidy to stop saying shoot so often (now they all expect me to say bang!!:lmao: ) and for Abi I can't remember what it was so it must have worked:rotfl:

When my cousin was little he sucked his thumb all the time. When he was about 3 or 4 all he wanted for Christmas was a big wheel. My aunt told him Santa wouldn't bring a bike to a baby. So he stopped and his big wheel was under the tree. He sat down on the bike and stuck his thumb right back in his mouth!!

Emma was a thumb sucker until she started walking then she stopped on her own. She also played with the tags in the back of her clothes when she was tired. She would have died without that tag. Good thing she was born when she was because by the time Mo came around everything was tagless! Mo never sucked on a pacifier or her thumb. Lucy sucks on her index finger and middle finger on her right hand and plays with a tag in her left! But she only does it when she's ready for bed.

:headache: Grrrr.
DS is home. He managed to misplace an assignment in Science so his grade dropped from a 93 to a 78. He can do an extra credit assignment, due tomorrow, to make up for it. He remembers doing the lab but he has no clue where the worksheet went. Great. so he has an extra paper to do tonight. WHERE do all of his science papers go? It boggles the mind.

Then there's band. There ISN'T a time for tomorrow because they don't want the kids to go home! We're supposed to drop him off at 8 AM and leave him there until 8:30 PM. Um, NO. His academics can not and will not be neglected because of a stupid football game. I am already mad that there are TWO football games, one for 7th grade and one for 8th grade but DS has to be there for BOTH. At Open House the director said they will go out about 6:15 for the first game (game starts at 5:30 PM) and stay out until about 8:15 PM (second game starts at 7:30). If DS doesn't have to be at the game until 6:15 then he is coming HOME until 5:30 or so. So DH is going to go in the Band room after school tomorrow and inform them that DS is going home and will be back in time for the game.

For Wednesday they don't know what time they are leaving. The band director was out sick today, and apparently the assistants don't know any more than the kids! They are supposed to take a bus to the competition. Well, we'll see what TIME they are supposed to go. Since this is a short week (no school Friday) DS has to finish all of his stuff for Friday by Thursday, and that won't happen if he doesn't get to come home to work on it! He was trying to tell me he will do his homework in the Band room. Right. With the other kids running around like complete idiots? I don't think so.

Cassidy did something similar when we were weaning her off the bottle. We told her if went a week without her bottle (water and only at sleeping times..unless she was with the babysitter) we'd go to the movies...even back then she loved the movies. Well after we got home from the movies she said "baba?":rotfl:

I just finished reading Stephenie Meyer's book "The Host". Very good! I think I liked it better than the "Twilight" series! I seriously cannot wait for book group to discuss this one. At first, I thought it was going to be too science fiction-y for me, but I really got pulled into it! It's definitely more complex and adult than her other stuff, but I really enjoyed it.

I give it 2:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
