I talked to the insurance company as soon as i got home from the DMV, and got DD added to our insurance policy. DD is eligible for a good student discount, as well as for taking "formal" classes (required in Wisconsin, but apparently not in all states). There aren't any additional discounts available for her.

However, the agent on the phone did mention that since DH is now over 50, there will be a $70 reduction in our 6-month premium if DH takes an on-line defensive driving class. As I explained to the agent...does that mean I need to tell him he is "old" ??? :lmao: I just can't help but have fun with this one!!!

OMG I posted an identical post a few years ago! :lmao:

I can tell you from experience call AARP their insurance rates are excellent, they cover teens, they were great to us when DS's car was stolen and we saved a huge chunk. We were formerly with Farmers (too spendy when DS started driving so we moved to American Family) and when DH turned 50 I did some shopping. Huge savings

Most insurance companies have discounts for people 50 and older or 55 and older if they take the 55 alive classes. You have to take them every 2 years to keep the discount. We have American Family and while they might be more expensive for a teen driver they have the Teen Safe Driver Camera program that is priceless for teens so we won't switch until we are done needing that.

Good point, by the time AmFam started offering the cameras our DS had been driving for about a year and a half and was right at 18 so we opted to not use them, but I agree they are a great tool for parents with newly licensed teens.

We sent DS off the "Drivers Edge" for some really good behind the wheel driving experience. The program is free and travels around the country. He attended 2 summers in a row.
